Sanitizing Applications Using Atomizing Spray Nozzles

As our journeys through the COVID-19 pandemic began, EXAIR was deemed an essential business due to our relationships with critical businesses who are also helping to fight the pandemic and keep our lives as normal as possible. Within our customer base, we are proud to include medical, food, pharmaceutical, and nearly every industry listed by the Department of Homeland Security as critical industries.

EXAIR has seen an increase in assisting end-user customers who have in house sanitizing needs and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) who are producing sanitizing systems or “showers” for their processes and products as demanded by our pandemic circumstances.

Our Atomizing Spray Nozzles, designed to atomize fluids in a wide range of different spray patterns, utilize a small amount of compressed air that mixes with the liquid supply to create a fine mist of atomized liquid. This makes them very effective in applications that utilize expensive paints, oils, or other liquids. Rather than wasting the expensive materials, the nozzle can be set to precisely dispense only what is necessary to achieve a successful application. They are made from type 303 stainless steel.

No Drip Atomizing Nozzle

Atomizing spray nozzles have been critical for customer’s decontamination and sanitizing needs. Most recently we learned they are being used to build an N95 mask sanitizing systems, when the customer needed to replenish their rapidly dwindling supply of atomizing spray nozzles. Don’t forget, we have them in STOCK and ready to ship!

Internal Mix Atomizing Spray Nozzles

Another customer utilizes the Model EF1010SS to perform a dry fogging process inside of residential and commercial rooms to eliminate mold, odors, and pathogens. For them this is a common process, but due to the concerns related to COVID-19 they’ve seen a dramatic increase in business related to pathogen removal. Using a two-step dry fogging process, the solution fills the entire volume of the space to remove any contaminants and prevent against microbial growth in the future. The nozzle provides a fine atomized mist that fills the entire space in a short amount of time. After a physical wipe down of all surfaces, a second solution is applied that prevents future microbial growth.

And yet another customer manufactures decontamination booths for personnel. They’re also noticing an increase in inquiries as companies look to decontaminate their employees upon entering the building. Utilizing (3) of EXAIR’s SF2020SS Atomizing Spray Nozzles, they’re able to spray a decontaminating solution to aid removal of pathogens from their clothing before it has an opportunity to spread around the office.

Protect Finishes and Save Liquid with EXAIR No Drip Atomizing Nozzles

A typical “liquid-only” nozzle is capable of producing droplet sizes of 300-4,000 microns. Atomizing Nozzles’ droplet sizes are consistently under 100 microns, and can be as small as 20 microns!

In today’s market, the cost of consumable products are on the rise; especially with paints, oils, and yes, even the cost of water.  You can help ease some of that cost by being more effective in spraying.  The EXAIR Atomizing Nozzles can achieve this objective.  By using compressed air, the liquid can be sheared into small micron-sized droplets.  As a reference, if the diameter of a particle is reduced by one-half, this will multiply the number of droplets by eight.  So, smaller diameter droplets will increase the coverage area and reduce liquid requirement in your application.

EXAIR manufactures three families of Atomizing Nozzles; Internal Mix, External Mix, and Siphon Fed.  We offer a variety of spray patterns and sizes; so, you can accurately target and use the proper amount of liquid in your system.  In this blog, I will narrow my discussion to the No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzles.

The No Drip option is offered with all of our Atomizing Nozzles.  This patented design is used to keep the expensive liquid from dripping out of the Atomizing Nozzles during off cycles.  When the compressed air is turned off to the nozzle, a valve inside the body will create a seal on the liquid side.  This No Drip function enhances the External Mix Atomizing Nozzle for intermittent processes as the liquid remains inside the body for quick spraying. With delicate applications, the unwanted drips will not occur to ruin the finish of your product.  Unlike some manufacturers, there is no need to run a separate compressed air line to operate the no drip function.  The External Mix Atomizing Nozzles with the No Drip options can give you the best performance in efficiency, effectiveness, and flexibility without any drips.

No Drip External Mix

To expand on the External Mix Atomizing Nozzle, it atomizes the liquid outside the nozzle.  The air and liquid supply are pressurized and can be controlled independently.  This type of Atomizing Nozzle will allow for higher viscous fluids to be sprayed up to 800 CPS, similar to SAE 40W oil.  Also, with the external mixing, it helps to diminish the drying effects of solutions which will reduce shutdowns for cleaning.  EXAIR manufactures these nozzles with stainless-steel construction making them compatible with many different kinds of liquids.  They are used in many applications like washing, coating, cooling, quenching, and dust control.

Spray nozzles in action.

EXAIR stocks three different body sizes in 1/8” NPT, ¼” NPT, and ½” NPT ports; so, you can create a light mist or a monsoon.  The combination of an air cap and a liquid cap controls the spray patterns and liquid flow rates.  These caps are easily interchangeable for each body size to change the spray patterns, control the amount of fluid, and reduce any downtime for cleaning.  The amount of liquid to be applied is easily adjusted by the inlet air pressure and liquid pressure.  So, you can dial in the exact amount of fluid required for your process to stop any waste or excess.

They have a compact design to mount inside tight areas, and we also have mounting brackets for easy attachment and positioning.   If your application needs versatility, fluid savings, and precise coverage; the No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzles could be the nozzle for you.  If you have any questions about our Atomizing Nozzles or spraying applications, an Application Engineer at EXAIR will be happy to help you.

These Plants Don’t Need Dirt, Just an Atomizing Spray Nozzle

Recently I was working with a company who grows plants using a method I’ve never heard of before, aeroponics. See I grew up on a farm, so I’m used to the old fashion way to grow crops! Dirt, water and sunlight, or as my grandpa would call them “The three pillars of life as we know it”.

So I had to do some research into aeroponics so I could understand if we could help him. It turns out aeroponics does not use a dirt medium, they relay on a very fine mist to provide the nutrients the plant needs to grow.  But its very important that the mist have droplet sizes of less than 50 microns, or the roots will not be able to absorb it.

At that point I knew EXAIR’s Atomizing Spray Nozzles were the right direction!

We ended up going with the AW8010SS Internal mix wide angle round pattern. And after playing with them the customer ran the nozzles at 5 PSIG air pressure and 10 PSI of  liquid pressure. running the nozzle every 10-15 mins kept the room at the perfect humidity for the plants they are growing.

They are planning to install up to 20 of the AW8010SS Internal mix wide angle round pattern in each section of their facility once they build their building!
