Super Air Knives Used as a Non-Contact Barrier in a Non-Woven Application

An overseas customer manufactures a 2.2 meter wide non-woven material.  In one of their processes, the media would travel through a spray booth to apply a water-based surfactant.  The surfactant was atomized and blown onto the top and bottom of the material.  The spray booth was equipped with a fume hood to capture any excess mist.  The material would then travel out of the spray booth and into the oven to dry.

Because they were running at a speed of 160 m/min, a draft was being created as the media was exiting the spray booth.  This draft was strong enough to overcome the vacuum pressure from the fume collection system.  This would allow the excess mist to escape the spray booth.  It was then collecting on the surface of the oven and floor outside the containment area.  This created a safety issue as well as a large mess.

In looking at the problem area, the dimension of the opening of the spray booth was 2.65 meters by 300 mm.  To blow a good curtain of air to contain the mist, we needed to have a laminar flow to create that “wall”.  I recommended two pieces of a model 1102108 Super Air Knife Kits.  At 108” (or 2.74m) long, they are the longest Super Air Knives in the market.  With a steady flow of air along the entire 2.74 meter length, it can generate that curtain of air across the entire opening of the spray booth.  The laminar flow was key as they did not want to disturb the spraying nozzles inside the booth.

The Super Air Knife Kit also comes with a filter, a regulator, and a shim set.  With the included shim set, the force can be changed dramatically by using a different thickness of shim.  Since they did not need much force to keep the mist inside the spray booth, they opted to put a thinner shim inside the Super Air Knife.  This would reduce the amount of compressed air needed, and with a regulator, the customer could “dial” in the correct amount of force to create the proper air barrier.  The Super Air Knives were mounted above and below the material to blow directly across the opening of the spray booth.  Any fine mist that would come in contact with the air would be deflected back into the spray booth.  With the extra mist removed from the process, the fume extraction system could then perform its duties the way it was intended. With air being used to create that barrier, it did not disrupt the structure of the material or the surfactant on its surface.

A Solution for This and a Solution for That – Solving Problems Throughout the Plant

Last week, I got an email from a customer.  It was late in the day, and I was spent from a busy day.  The customer was emailing for (2) reasons. First, they wanted to express their appreciation for our efforts several months ago regarding an application for a Vortex Tube. Over the course of a couple of weeks, we shared information and ideas back and forth regarding the Vortex Tube technology, how it works, and the various considerations when choosing the appropriate model.  They ended up purchasing a unit and put it into operation.  The application involved a plastic tubing cutting process and in this instance both the cold and hot air streams could be utilized to improve the process. The process involves heating up the material so it would lose its memory set, and then a cooling operation to improve the material cutting and handling.  Below is an excerpt from the recent email:

The second reason for the email was that he needed help with another application and based on the success of the initial collaboration, he knew he could trust in EXAIR to help find a solution that would work.  The new application involves protecting a camera lens from debris created during a wire cutting laser process. The lens is getting hit with spatter and damage is starting to occur. Our collaboration has begun, and we are looking at the Super Air Knife and Flat Super Air Nozzle as possible solutions, each of them providing a strong air flow to direct the debris away from the lens.

You Make A Better Door Than A Window

As a life-long smart aleck, this phrase has always been one of my favorite ways to gently request that someone move to one side or the other so that I can see what they’re looking at. As I’ve mellowed with age, it’s largely replaced the more demanding “Yo, down in front!!” which I’ve learned to save for only the most urgent of situations. These usually occur at sporting events, where, unfortunately, it’s some of the more tame language you’ll hear at stadiums and ballparks these days.

In industry, there are certainly proper places for doors: Nothing beats a solid-core, well-sealed door to keep welding smoke out of the office space at a manufacturing company. On a smaller scale, sand blast cabinet manufacturers realize that their cabinets’ doors are so important, they put switches on them to prevent you from starting one up with the door open.

But what if it’s not practical – or possible – to put a solid boundary between a contained area and the general environment? EXAIR Super Air Knives are successfully used in “air barrier” applications in industries as diverse as metal processing, pharmaceuticals, high detail printing, and commercial laundry equipment.

Our Line Vac even got a piece of the action with a commercial maker of baked goods: A part of their process involves mixing sugar into a vat of melted butter. The heat and steam tended to melt the sugar, though, before it made it all the way down the chute into the vat. This not only wasted a good deal of the sugar, but made for a real hassle in cleaning the chute. They installed a Model 6066 3” Stainless Steel Line Vac in the chute, which not only kept the sugar moving fast enough to prevent it from melting, but it also kept the heat & steam from “migrating” up the chute.
