Compressed Air Use in Construction

When you are driving by a construction site you will typically see things like the photo below! This is a 185 SCFM diesel air compressor. Just like in the manufacturing industry, there are jobs that require the use of compressed air. But when your site changes every so often, you can’t build a full compressor room. That’s where this kind of compressor comes into play. They can be pulled behind a standard truck, and depending on the size, can supply a large amount of compressed air.

On our website we have an amazing tool we refer to as theĀ Application Database! This is a library of applications that are sorted by industry and application! All you have to do is create an account onĀ EXAIR.comĀ and BAM you have access!

Now, let’s look at a few applications in theĀ Construction sector!

The first customer used our line of Air operated Conveyors!

A customer was installing a border fence for the US Department of Homeland Security.Ā They cannot use a posthole digger because they are in sand and the hole collapses. So they hammer drill the posts in. Then they need to remove the sand from the interior of the pipe, so they can fill it with concrete. This is to prevent intruders from sawing off the post. TheĀ Model 150200 2″ (51mm) Heavy Duty Line VacĀ easily removed the sand and small rocks. Being made of hardened alloy steel, it held up to the abrasion of the sand and rock.

Super Air knivesĀ are used in the manufacture of one of the most used, wood material in home construction!

A company manufactures Oriented Strand Board (OSB). They were having a housekeeping issue at various places within their OSB press. They were only able to run 10-15 minutes at a time before they would have to clear material from the press to keep from damaging the finish on the product yet to be pressed. They purchased a Super Air Knife to blow off the press area to keep debris from piling up and affecting the finish.

Maintaining A Consistent Appearance On Oriented Strand Board

These are just a few of many applications we hear and work with every day! While we have a good number of applications on the site, we have even more in our heads. So if you don’t see anything on the site that matches what you are looking for, give us a call. We have a team of Application Engineers ready to discuss your application specifically and determine how our products can best help you be more efficient in your processes!

EXAIR’s HollowStream Liquid Atomizing Spray Nozzles get a new Size!

When it comes to liquid spraying, EXAIR is introducing a new size to the line of all liquid nozzles.  They are engineered to spin the liquid in order to break the surface tension.  Passing through a precision orifice, the liquid will break into fine particles.  The smaller the particle size, the greater the surface area, which reduces liquid use.  Now we are adding the brand new 1/8″ NPT HollowStream Nozzle to our product offering!

TheĀ HollowStreamā„¢ Cone Liquid NozzlesĀ produce a liquid ring on the target. This will reduce liquid use when compared to ourĀ OmniStreamā„¢ Cone Liquid Nozzles.Ā  They are available in NPT and BSP female threads in the new 1/8, ¼, 3/8, and 1/2 sizes with varying liquid flow rates. They are all made of 303 stainless steel with a vane-less design to help resist clogging.Ā  They can handle 250 PSIG (17.2 barg) of liquid pressure and operate at temperatures up to 800oF (427oC).Ā  Some applications would include cooling, quenching, washing, foam breaking, sanitizing, and de-greasing.

With six different styles that range from 0.1 to 1.0 GPM, it adds even more flexibility to our Liquid-only spray nozzles! You can see the new body dimensions below and the flow rates at 3-60 PSI of liquid pressure under the Specifications here! https://www.exair.com/phl80x5ss.html

If you have a process where you need to reduce the amount of liquid to save money, EXAIR offers a line of Liquid Atomizing Nozzles as well as Air Atomizing Nozzles.  The design is to reduce the droplet size to increase coverage.  Here is a blog with the Air Atomizing Nozzles for improving Gummy Candy Production.  In either case, if you have questions regarding how we can reduce costs and improve processes, you can contact an Application Engineer.  We will be happy to help you.

Atomizing Spray Nozzle in Action!

It’s not everyday we get to share a customer video of our products in action! But when I get the chance and permission to from the customer you better believe im writing a blog about it!

This was a unique application that took some R&D to figure the perfect amount of spray on a snack crisp to get the desired result. What you see in action below is what they settled on, which turned out to be a EF9040SS!

Model EF9040SS 14.42 GPH 1/8 FNPT No Drip Ext Mix Narrow Angle Flat Fan Atomizing Nozzle

I wanted to walk you through the selection process for the nozzle we picked, and how we tested different sized caps to get to the end goal!

Let’s start at the beginning! Customer called in to select a liquid nozzle to give a fine coat of a flavoring liquid onto a snack crisp. From the start that is a job for an Air Atomizing spray nozzle, and since the liquid was the viscosity of oil, the external mix was the right style! They said the crisps were moving one by one on a belt with a small gap between each crisp. So we went with the no drip function.

EXAIR’s No Drip Atomizing Spray Nozzles have been engineered eliminate drips; these patented nozzles contain a spring mechanism that when the air pressure reaches above 30 psig the valve will open allowing the liquid to escape out. In this case a solenoid valve is triggered on a timer to open and close based on the presence switch just prior to the nozzle!

No Drip Atomizing Nozzle

Now we moved onto pattern, we knew the crisp was round, and it’s moving by the nozzle at a set speed. So we went with the Flat Fan Pattern to coat the crisps and limit the amount of over spray.

Finally, it came down to volume if liquid they wanted to coat the crisp with, however this wasn’t an easy value for them to know. So to start they bought the smallest GPH No Drip Ext Mix Narrow Angle Flat Fan Atomizing Nozzle we offered and tested! It was working great, but they wanted to coat the crisp a little more and limit the super fine atomization of the oil. So they bought the caps for the size that was 3 higher than they had already tested! And bam you can see in the video its working great!

Catalog Section spray performance chart!

One hurtle to jump over was since this is an Air Atomizing nozzle it does have some force when it came out of the nozzle. So they were having troubles with the crisp being blown back up line then the nozzle was perpendicular with the belt. When the spray hit the belt it would make a wave of air and liquid that could get under the crisp and cause it to be pushed back. So this fix this I recommended they put the nozzle on a slight angle towards the direction of travel. This allowed the crisp to be pushed down and stay in place rather than be blown back and effecting the amount of liquid that the crisp had applied to it!

At EXAIR, we understand not every application is going to be a cookie cutter application, so you have a team of application engineers at your fingertips that will help you choose the best product for your specific application. Feel free to call or email at anytime.

Fine, Atomized Spray Achievable with EXAIR’s Internal Mix Air Atomizing Nozzles

EXAIR’s Air Atomizing Spray Nozzles are designed to atomize fluids using a small amount of compressed air. This mixture of liquid and compressed air allows for a fine mist of atomized liquid that can be easily adjusted to meet the needs of your application. All nozzles come constructed of stainless steel for superior durability and corrosion resistance.

These nozzles come in (3) primarily different families: Internal Mix, External Mix, and Siphon Fed. Today, I’d like to dive into the internal mix variety and provide some information on where these nozzles are going to be most applicable for you.

We call these ā€œinternal mixā€ due to the location in which the air and liquid come together. In an internal mix nozzle, this ā€œmixingā€ occurs from within the air cap itself. Both the air and liquid sides of the nozzle must be pressure fed. Since they’ll be mixing from within the nozzle itself, we are limited to liquids with a viscosity of up to 300cP. These internal mix style of nozzles do produce the finest atomization that we can achieve with our Air Atomizing Nozzles, making them ideal for solutions that require a very fine mist. The Internal Mix Atomizing Nozzles are offered with 1/8 NPT, ¼ NPT, and ½ NPT air and liquid inlets in a variety of different spray patterns.

Internal Mix Narrow Angle Round nozzles come in all (3) sizes and are perfect for applications that needĀ  concentrated mist of liquid. They can apply a heavy coat when positioned close to the material or a very fine mist up to 16’ away!

Internal Mix Wide Angle Round nozzles are also available in all (3) sizes and can be used in applications where we need to treat a broad area.

Internal Mix Flat Fan nozzles, again offered in all (3) sizes, are designed with efficiency in mind. They’re ideal for vertical or horizontal assembly lines and their broad thin pattern makes efficient use of expensive liquids. They can also be adjusted to deliver a light film or a heavy coat of liquid.

Internal Mix 360° Hollow Circular pattern are offered in both 1/4 and 1/2 NPT and deliver a 360° spray pattern in all directions from the nozzle. These are great for processes that require an even coating on the ID of pipe or similar ductwork. They’re also good in cases where we need to apply a mist cover a very broad area (such as dust suppression).

Last, but certainly not least, we have the Internal Mix Deflected Flat Fan nozzle. This is offered only in 1/4 NPT and is designed for processes where space is at a premium.

With all sizes and spray patterns available from stock with our Unconditional 30-Day Guarantee there’s no excuse to not give one a try!
