EXAIR Air Operated Conveyors Helped in a “Sticky” Situation.

An office furniture manufacturing company wanted to increase their production by installing two new automated edge banding lines in their facility.  These lines are designed to glue a plastic film to the outside edge of laminated wood panels.  Each system contained four gluing stations, one on each side of the line, positioned 15 meters apart.  Their goal was to duplicate their existing lines but with less floor space (and haven’t we all heard this one).  They were having issues in fitting the same type of equipment inside that limited amount of space.  Since they could not change the automated lines, they had to look at their next biggest system; the vacuum conveying system.  It consisted of a motor, a vacuum pump, an accumulator, and a control panel.  So, it had a large footprint (reference sketch below).

From the vacuum system, they branched out with conveyance lines that were fitted with a large actuator valve to open and close at certain times for filling.  With this configuration, they had a centerline distance between lines of 11 meters.  This conveying system was not only large, but very expensive.  They had to find an alternate method in order to add their new process lines.  They took to the internet and came across the EXAIR Air Operated Conveyors or, Line Vacs.

During our discussion, they gave me their design specifications required for the application. The glue pellets were 5.5mm in diameter and had a bulk density of 1100 Kg/M^3.  The gluing stations would only use 50 kg/hr  per hopper at full capacity.  The opening of the hopper was positioned 4 meters from the ground level above the processing line.

With these requirements, the EXAIR Line Vac was the perfect product to use.  I suggested using one of a model 6982 Aluminum Line Vac Kit per hopper.   This kit comes with a 1 ¼” Line Vac, a mounting bracket, a filter separator, and a regulator.  They could mount them near the super sack of glue pellets, individually control each Line Vac, and convey the desired amount of material to each hopper.  At a 4 meter height and a maximum 15 meter distance, the model 6982 has the ability to convey nearly 150 Kg/hr at 5.5 bar.  The pressure regulator that is included in each kit could be used to “dial in” the required amount of material at the different distances.  With its compact size, 61mm diameter by 91mm long, it could fit nicely near the machines without taking up valuable floor space.

They were able to mount the Line Vac Kits next to the lines which allowed them to move the edge banding lines closer together.  They were able to decrease the centerline distance from the original system of 11 meters to a distance of 6 meters.   Thus, solving the above issue by gaining valuable floor space.  As an added value in conveying with EXAIR Line Vacs, they were able to reduce the cost by 1/10 of the original vacuum system.

The design of the Line Vac makes it very easy to mount, setup, and use right away. They do not have any moving parts or motor bearings to wear, making them very reliable and long lasting.  In addition to that, the cost comparison between the large vacuum system and the EXAIR Line Vacs has a great financial benefit as well.  If your company needs a compact, simple, inexpensive conveying systems to move product, you should contact an Application Engineer to see if we have an Air Operated Conveyor that will suit your application.

A Line Vac Air Operated Conveyor System Really IS Just That Simple. Seriously.

I’m a skeptic by nature. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”, is engrained in my cerebral cortex as firmly as anything else. And I know I’m not the only one, if only because of the conversations I have with callers about our Line Vacs. Here are some of the questions we’ll get:

“What all do I need?” Here’s a basic system:

A Line Vac.
A length of hose to get from Point A to Point B.
A supply of compressed air.
Something to convey.

Click on the photo to see a great example of the simplicity of an EXAIR Line Vac Air Operated Conveyor system in this video.
Click here for a great video example of the simplicity of an EXAIR Line Vac Air Operated Conveyor system.

That’s it.  You might need something to hold the hose in place.  Or maybe a Mounting Bracket for the Line Vac to hold IT in place…if so, one comes in the Kit.  Which brings me to the next question…

“What ELSE do I need?”

This depends on what you’re conveying.  Anything in your compressed air supply to the Line Vac can get on (or in) the product passing through.  Our Kits include an Automatic Drain Filter Separator, which keeps the air clean & dry.  If you need to keep any trace of oil from your product, we’ve got Oil Removal Filters, which can couple right to the Kit’s Filter Separator.  Not only do they use a coalescing action to remove any trace of oil, they provide additional particulate filtration down to 0.03 microns.  THAT’S some clean, dry air right there.

“What’s the catch?”

By and large, the mission of the Application Engineering staff at EXAIR is to eliminate any “catches.”  We’ll discuss your application with you and make just as solid of a recommendation as we can with the data provided.  We’ll talk about:

The physical nature of your product.  If it can make a combustible mixture with air, we won’t specify a Line Vac.  If it’s particularly low density, we’ll discuss the Light Duty models.  If it’s abrasive or particularly high density, we’ll go to the Heavy Duty models.  If it’s corrosive, we’ve got Stainless Steel.

The environment it’ll be used in.  If it’s hot (or corrosive, like the product,) we’ve got Stainless Steel.  If it’s REALLY hot – up to 900F (482C) – we’ve got High Temperature units.

How you want to hook it up.  We’ve got Conveyance Hose for our standard Line Vacs…it’s reinforced PVC and is awesome for typical industrial/commercial uses.  If you want to use hose with specific properties (food grade, static resistant, high temperature, etc.,) these are all readily commercially available, and are quite commonly seen in successful Line Vac installations.  Our Threaded Line Vacs can be used with NPT pipe fittings & connections for more permanent setups.

Lastly, the “catch” is ours…not yours.  If, after a thorough discussion (mind you, I can talk about Line Vacs all day long…and sometimes I do,) there are still some variables or unanswered questions, we offer all catalog products with a 30 Day Unconditional Guarantee.  Try it out – if it doesn’t do what you want, we’ll arrange return for full credit; easy as that.  It’s the complete absence of “catch.”  Oh, and if you buy a Line Vac before October 31, 2016, you’ll get a free 2″ Flat Super Air Nozzle.

If you’ve got a Line Vac – or any Engineered Compressed Air Product – application you’d like to discuss,  give me a call.

Heavy Duty Line Vac is a Simple Solution When Mechanical Conveyors Fail

Line Vacs can convey many things.
Line Vacs can convey many things.

A manufacturing plant had a machine that would process 6mm ceramic beads into small medical components.  They used a screw type conveyor to move the ceramic beads from a large container into a hopper above the machine.  In this situation, the customer called EXAIR prior to determining which mechanical component failed.  They contacted the conveyor manufacturer for assistance.  Because of the complexity of the conveying system, it would take time to evaluate.  They had to determine if it was the motor, the gear box, the shaft, or electrical system.  Depending on which item that failed, there was a good chance that it would not be in stock.  With this length of downtime, it would cost the company much money and delays in shipments. The operation had to be shut down until they could find a way to keep the hopper filled with ceramic beads.  Being that they were under the gun, they contacted EXAIR to see if we could help.

Heavy Duty Line Vac

Heavy Duty Line Vac

In discussing their layout, the hopper was 10 feet away from the supply container, and the opening of the hopper was 10 feet above the floor.  These lengths were well within the limits of the EXAIR Air Operated Conveyors.  I suggested the model 152200 Heavy Duty Line Vac Kit.  This unit has the highest conveyance rate, and it can move items in the range of plastic pellets to steel shot.  It does not have any moving parts, so it makes it very simple, reliable, and long lasting.  The Heavy Duty Line Vac is made of a hardened steel that makes it very resistant to abrasion.  The next question he asked was if we had it in stock.   We did!!!  EXAIR stocks every cataloged model number for same day shipping with orders placed before 3 p.m. EST.  We were able to ship the Heavy Duty Line Vac that same day to get his operation back up and running.  He did mention to me afterwards that he wished he had at least one Heavy Duty Line Vac on his shelf as a backup system.  It could have saved his company an entire day of downtime.

If your company relies on mechanical conveying systems to move product, you may want to have an EXAIR Air Operated Conveyor on hand just in case of an emergency.  When things go wrong, you do not want to be down any longer than needed.  If you need help in sizing the correct Line Vac for your application, you can contact an Application Engineers at EXAIR.

Another “Bucket And Ladder” Operation, Foiled By The Line Vac

Let me start by saying that EXAIR Corporation has nothing against buckets. Or ladders. We use them both here for a variety of tasks, and are very satisfied with them. But when they’re used together…that’s where we’re going to take exception. And we’re not the only ones.

I had the pleasure of speaking to an expert technician with a company that provides world class water recycling equipment & services. They use our Model 140200 2″ NPT Threaded Aluminum Line Vacs to move bentonite clay (an amazingly versatile purification & absorption media) from 50 lb bags into a hopper. It is then dispersed into a holding tank of oily water, where it removes the pollutants and impurities, allowing for clean recycling.  And, since they no longer have to carry it up a ladder and pour it in, it’s also safer and more efficient.

EXAIR Corporation is committed to being proactive about the way we impact the environment. Our Sustainability Plan details the way we do this in regards to our responsible consumption of resources, our conscientious waste recycling measures, and the comprehensive impact of our products…everything from materials & design, to their efficient usage, to packaging. So, when our products are used in  application geared toward like-minded goals, it’s a win-win-win. For EXAIR, our customers, and the environment.

This is one of many ways that EXAIR’s diverse line of compressed air products are not only making processes more efficient, but making the world a better place through dedication to being “clean and green.” If you’d like to know more, please give me a call.
