Heavy Duty Line Vac: A Powerful and Durable Pneumatic Conveyor

HDTHRlvFAMbg_500sq

EXAIR’s Line Vacs are an ideal solution for bulk conveying over long distances. With just a small amount of compressed air, the Line Vac generates vacuum on one end and high output flows on the other. The conveyance rate is easily adjustable by regulating the pressure supplied to the Line Vac. At higher input pressures the Line Vac will move more material, at lesser pressures the conveyance rate is also reduced.

The Heavy Duty Line Vac looks similar to the standard Line Vac, but packs a more powerful punch. Performance has been boosted with larger holes in the generator. This makes the Heavy Duty Line Vac ideal for heavier materials that must be conveyed over longer vertical and horizontal distances. Standard Line Vacs can also be drilled out to match the performance of a Heavy Duty. In addition to being a more powerful conveying system, the Heavy Duty Line Vac is also constructed of our proprietary hardened alloy steel blend. This material provides exceptionally strong abrasion resistance for applications requiring the transfer of materials such as crushed glass, steel shot, or dry sand.

Where a material such as aluminum or even stainless steel would quickly wear out, the Heavy Duty Line Vac will not. As with all of our stock products, the Heavy Duty Line Vac comes with EXAIR’s Built-To-Last 5 year warranty. We’ve tested these units here ourselves with a variety of different common abrasive materials. Check out the video below to see for yourself just how durable these Line Vacs are!

Just as the Standard Line Vacs, the Heavy Duty Line Vac can come with either smooth of NPT threaded connections to turn ordinary pipe into a powerful conveying system. With sizes from ¾ NPT up to 3” NPT, there’s a size from stock available suitable for your application. If you’re looking to move abrasive materials from one point to another in your shop, look no further than EXAIR’s Heavy Duty Line Vac. Product Overview: EXAIR Line Vacs

Line Vacs can convey many things.

Do you have operators climbing steps to dump bags of material into hoppers?  Do you need a faster way to remove scrap from a process?  Do you have budgetary constraints in trying to move material from punt A to point B?  If you answered yes to any of these, EXAIR may have a simple solution.  We manufacture an air-operated conveyor that does not have any moving parts, has a very compact design, and generates a high throughput capacity.  They can attach easily to standard hoses, pipes, or sanitary flanges to convert your piping system into a powerful conveying system.   EXAIR manufactures these air-operated conveyors and trademarks them as Line Vacs™.

EXAIR Line Vacs use a small amount of compressed air to generate a powerful vacuum by a Venturi effect.  The unique design of the generator creates a high velocity of air to create a low pressure on one side and a powerful thrust on the other.  The Line Vac can pick up and move solid material from light and fluffy batting to steel components.  They can transfer product horizontally up to 100 feet (30 meters) away and vertically up to 20 feet (6 meters) high.  You can watch a video on the operation of a Line Vac HERE.  Compared to other vacuum or conveying systems, the EXAIR Line Vacs are very quiet, rugged, and powerful.  EXAIR makes a variety of Line Vacs in different sizes, styles, and materials to best fit your application.

The standard Line Vac is the most versatile product in this family.  EXAIR stocks a wide range of sizes, materials, and styles for targeting the best solution for moving material.  We have two types of connections, slip-on ends for hose connections and threaded ends for pipe connection.  EXAIR can swap the connections with a slip-on hose on one end with a threaded connection on the other.  They range in diameters from 3/8” (10mm) up to 5” (127mm).  We manufacture the Line Vacs in aluminum, 303SS, and 316SS; but don’t let that deter you if your need them manufactures in any other type of material.  We have high temperature models that can withstand temperatures up to 900 deg. F (482 deg. C).  These Line Vacs work great in applications for loading plastic pellets in hoppers, discarding scrap pieces, trim removal, and transferring material.  If an operator has to carry a container of dry material and climb stairs, a Line Vac could be a much better alternative.

Heavy Duty Line Vac: Hardened Alloy Construction and High Performance

The Heavy Duty Line Vacs are made from a hardened alloy steel for abrasion resistance.  The generators inside these Line Vacs are more powerful than the standard models; so, that they can convey heavier materials at higher conveyance rates.  They can reach rates as high as 40 lbs./min. (18.2Kg/min) of material.  With the hardened alloy construction, they are great for sand blasting applications, ceramic, glass and steel shot.  They are manufactured with inlet and outlet connections for ship-on hoses or threaded pipes.  EXAIR stocks the Heavy Duty Line Vacs in the range from ¾” (19mm) to 3” (76mm) for both hose and NPT connections.  These Line Vacs are our most powerful design with great wear resistance.

EXAIR’s Light Duty Line Vac

On the other end of the Line-Vac spectrum, EXAIR also created the Light Duty Line Vac.   They use much less compressed air than the other Line Vacs which work great for moving lightweight materials over short distances.  They can also be used for removing smoke and fumes from a work area.  The Light Duty Line Vac ranges from ¾” (19mm) up to 6” (152mm) diameter for slip-on hose connections.  This two-piece design provides an effective way of moving material at a lower cost.  It can be used in applications like hopper loading, fiber tensioning, filling operations, and smoke removal.   For moving material within a short distance, the Light Duty Line Vac could be the proper product to use.

Model 161200-316 – 316 Stainless Steel Sanitary Flange Line Vac

Our latest engineering design within the Line Vac family is the Sanitary Flange Line Vacs.  They can fit within sanitary piping systems to convert pipes into a useful conveyor for bulk material and waste removal.  They use an ISO2852 flange for easy disassembly and cleaning to reduce bacterial entrapment.  They ae made from 316 stainless steel material for superior corrosion resistance.  They come in four different sizes to fit the sanitary flanges from 1-½” up to a 3” flange.  For sensitive applications where cleanliness is a major requirement, the Sanitary Flange Line Vac are manufactured for these conditions.

With all of the EXAIR Line Vacs above, they can be sold as kits.  A kit will include a filter, regulator and a bracket.  (A bracket is not sold with the Light Duty Line Vac kits.)  The filter will help keep the Line Vac clean as well as the product that it is conveying.  The regulator is a great tool to vary the conveyance rates for better control.  The bracket helps to mount the Line Vac to a sturdy base for support.  A useful accessory to conveniently hide the compact Line Vac for ease of use and operation.

If you need to convey solid materials in a quick and easy way, an EXAIR Line Vac could be a solution for you.  We have them in a variety of formats to match your application.  They are compact, quiet, and simple to use without any moving parts.  As compared to a conveying system which is bulky and rigid, the Line Vacs are flexible and inexpensive.  Ergonomically, they can save the back-wrenching labor of picking up bags, climbing stairs, and dumping material into hoppers.  If you want to know if the EXAIR Line Vac could work for you, please fill out the Line Vac Data Sheet (click HERE).  An Application Engineer at EXAIR will help to recommend the best unit for you.

Custom Products Designed Just for Your Application

Because EXAIR designs and manufactures our own products, if you need something a little different we can probably help. This is true throughout our entire product line, the following examples are of our Line Vac products.

Do you have an application that may not be best served by one of our stock Line Vac products? While we have quite a variety of both materials, sizes, and connection types sometimes a special application requires a special solution. For this reason,  EXAIR manufactures special Line Vacs suited EXACTLY for the type of application or environment that it’ll be operating in.

This special Miniature Line Vac was manufactured with barb fittings and designed for a manufacturer of integrated circuit chips. It was used to remove microscopic debris during the chip making process. It’s small overall footprint makes it ideal for applications requiring tight mounting conditions. It has also been used by other manufacturers to vacuum liquid and chips from small drilled holes. While the Line Vac isn’t typically suitable for liquids, the higher vacuum level associated with the smaller Line Vacs makes it a possibility.

ldlvspec1

This next special Line Vac was used to convey fine powders or granulated materials from a hopper. While this is a pretty straight-forward application for a standard Line Vac, their material could sometimes be moist which would pack the tube and restrict the flow of material. The funnel-shaped design created a suction on the existing tube that permitted a continuous product flow.

ldlvspec5

This flanged Line Vac was used to retrofit existing machinery to remove acidic vapors resulting from surface etching of a silicon wafer. Where this would typically be a nice fit for a Stainless Steel Air Amplifier, the existing exhaust piping was lengthy with many bends that would have caused back pressure on any Air Amplifiers. In this case, they needed the high velocity airflow from the directed nozzles of the Line Vac to overcome this downstream resistance.

ldlvspec3

In addition to making Line Vacs in different shapes and sizes, we can also use special materials. In this instance, the special flanged Line Vac was manufactured out of PVDF (Polyvinylidene Flouride) due to its superior corrosive resistance. The Line Vac would be regularly exposed to a chloride wash that would corrode even stainless steel. It was also manufactured with special QF flanges to allow for easy assembly and removal of the conveying hoses for cleaning purposes.

ldlvspec4

As you can see the sky is the limit when it comes to potential styles of Line Vacs. Don’t think just because you don’t find something you need in the catalog that EXAIR can’t do it! We’ll create special manufactured products for just about anything that you can find in the catalog, not just the Line Vacs. Whether it’s custom-length Super Air Knives or special Air Amplifiers we can make it happen. Reach out to an Application Engineer today for help designing a solution, just for YOU!

Line Vacs- Air Operated Conveyors, and Much More

The EXAIR Line Vac is a tried and true device for conveying parts, materials, and waste – with no moving parts. The list of successfully conveyed materials in the application database is far reaching – including plastic pellets, scrap/trim, chips, pills/tablets, shavings, sawdust and granules.

The Line Vacs can be used for more than conveying large amounts of material from A to B. Recently, one of our automation customers found an application for the Line Vac in the design and manufacture of a custom fill machine.  The machine was commissioned to fill small, plastic cups.  To move the cups from the material staging area to the filler processing area, (10) of the 2″ aluminum Line Vacs were used.  Using a sensor to measure the stack height in each tube, the compressed air is triggered on/off to transfer a group of cups over to the filling area.  See photo below-

Other types of applications that Line Vacs have been used for include pick and place, small space ventilation, fine powder dispersion and light vacuum generation. Another popular use is to integrate into a machining process for waste removal of chips, shavings, and waste removal.

The Line Vacs come in (3) types- Standard, Light Duty and Heavy Duty.  Also, (3) different end connections are available including smooth bore, threaded, and the new sanitary flanged. Depending on the model type, materials of construction may include aluminum, type 303 and 316 stainless steels, and a hardened alloy.  Special high temperature versions are available with temperature ratings up to 900°F (482°C.)

Light Duty Line Vac For Paper Trim Removal

Today I worked with a customer that manufactures a wide variety of material handling equipment including coil unwinders.  The engineer was calling because there was a special project for a coil unwinder that could handle a waste piece of paper trim.  As the metal coil is being unwound for delivery to a metal processing machine, the protective paper is pulled off and was to be collected into a waste receptacle for easy handling and disposal/recycling.  The engineer was hoping to replicate an existing system that used a hybrid blower system, with an extra compressed air nozzle, but in a simpler form.

Coil Unwinder

We proposed the use of the 4″ Light Duty Line Vac– shown below.130400The Light Duty Line Vacs offer an effective way to convey small and light materials a short distance. Like the standard Line Vac, the Light Duty Line Vac converts an ordinary hose or tube into a  conveyor for scrap, trim, and bulk materials.

When the process involves moving low volumes of materials over short distances, the Light Duty Line Vac is a great choice. The simplified (2) piece design offers effective conveying at a lower cost. As an added plus, the compressed air consumption is lowered to levels commensurate with handling the lighter materials, at lower volumes and short distances.  Using a pressure regulator to control the supply air allows for tuning of the transfer rate, and keeps air usage to the minimum amount needed.

The Light Duty Line Vacs are available with inlet/outlet diameters from 3/4″ up to 6″.  With no moving parts, maintenance free operation is assured.

EXAIR Provides Quick Blowoff Solution for Gauge Manufacturer

I was recently contacted by a manufacturer of custom measurement systems. They were working on a design for a system that could measure (2) different sizes of gears with a high degree of accuracy. A robotic arm would pick up the gear off of a conveyor and deposit it onto a gauge for inspection.

IMG_7328
The two gears being measured

During the initial quoting phase of the project they had been a little misled. They were told that the gears would be completely clean and free of debris before being deposited on the conveyor and picked up for inspection.  It turns out this would not be the case. Chips, oil, or debris remaining on the gear would result in false part rejection. With the required completion date looming, they reached out to EXAIR for some help in implementing a solution to clean the gear before inspection.

While blowing off the oil or chips from the gear was the primary concern, having this debris flying around inside the machine could have been problematic as well. We needed to find a way to contain the chips and remove them. In the process, there was a brief moment that the robot arm held the gauge in place just prior to depositing it onto the gauge. It was there that we identified an opportunity to both clean and remove the chips that were blown off the gear. Using a Model 1105 3/8 NPT Super Air Nozzle and Model 9068 Swivel, they were able to precisely position the blowoff to hit across the bottom of the gear where the chips were located. They then 3D printed a shroud to contain the area where the gauge was held and the blowoff would be performed. They designed the shroud with a 1-1/4” outlet to connect directly to our Model 6082 Line Vac. The intake of the Line Vac was installed right at this point and was set to activate as soon as the air nozzles began their cleaning cycle. The chips were blown off of the gears, contained by the shroud, and taken away to a bin underneath the machine by the Line Vac. The crisis was averted!!

This was the first time they had implemented some type of method to clean the part before measuring. In the past, they had lost potential projects due to the inability for them to provide a clean part for measurement. With this newfound method of part cleaning, they’re now able to be a more complete solutions provider to their customers. They’re able to design the part cleaning feature into the process from the start, rather than retroactively as they had to do here.
