Temperature Fluctuations Damage Control Panels. EXAIR’s Cabinet Coolers are Here to Save the Day!

It’s a longstanding joke for anyone that lives in the Cincinnati area that we can experience all (4) seasons in less than a week. This past weekend, we topped out at a high temperature of 83°F. This morning when I left the house it was a cool, crisp 37°F. With temperatures later on this week dropping below freezing, we’ve gone from the heat of summer to the cold of winter all in less than a week. These uncertain temperature fluctuations create all sorts of problems for farmers and home gardeners (like myself) as we struggle with determining the best time to plant (and rushing to cover up anything that’s already been planted!). Additionally, extreme temperature fluctuations can also cause significant issues for the electrical panels in your facility.

During times of high heat, the temperatures inside of these enclosures can reach dangerous levels. The use of fans, or worse opening the panel door, does help to keep the temperature down. But this can create even more issues. When using a fan or opening the panel door, you expose the sensitive internal electronics to any dirt, dust, debris, and even moisture from the ambient environment. Fortunately, maintaining a safe temperature and clean environment inside of your enclosure is simple.

It’s Shaping Up to Be a HOT Summer!

These last several weeks have been unprecedented for all of us. We’ve had a lot more time to spend isolated at home with our families and everyone’s begun to get a bit stir crazy. It’s a great opportunity to tackle some of those long overdue projects that have been stacking up. The lawns in the neighborhood have never been greener, there’s no excuses this year! This year’s summer garden is also shaping up to be a HOT one.

Starting my plants from seed this year has been a fulfilling journey (with plenty of learning curves!) but allowed me the opportunity to hand pick the varieties of peppers and tomatoes I’ll have later on in the year. For this year we’re really bringing the heat with a variety of superhot peppers: Peach Reapers, Purple Bhut Jolokia, Orange Long Tail Scorpion, and 7 Pot Lava Yellow along with a few “milder” peppers for when the heat gets a little too intense..

Reliable Heat Protection Right Now: The EXAIR Cabinet Cooler System

Electrical and electronic devices can be finicky creatures.  Shutting them away inside a sealed enclosure keeps dust, fumes, and humidity away, but it’s about the worst thing you can do to them, heat-wise.  If you don’t provide some means of cooling, they’re going to simply burn up, and you’ll have to replace them.  If they’re critical for your operation, you better keep a spare, because they’re not always on the shelf, and they’re not even always in the country.

Conventional wisdom, then, says you should provide some method of cooling.  You can use a vented enclosure, with a fan & louvers, assuming it’s not in a spray down/wash down area.  But if it’s in a dusty and/or humid and/or fume-ridden area, well, you’ve just compromised the reason you put them in an enclosure in the first place.

Refrigerant based panel coolers are prolific…they come in all shapes & sizes, and they’re probably sold by the folks you got the electrical panel from.  Thing is, they can be susceptible to the same dust, fumes, and humidity that you’re trying to keep from wrecking what’s inside the enclosure.  If the filters get clogged, the tubes get fouled, a refrigerant leak develops, the motor burns out, the compressor fails (just to name a few potential problems,) we’re back to recommending keeping spare parts around, or, even worse, opening up the panel for emergency cooling…

I’ve already documented my penchant for insanely hot foods in a previous blog post about my participation in a hot wing competition. Over the years, I’ve grown a few different varieties of super-hot peppers in my garden that’s led to my love for all things fire. In years past I’ve been limited to the varieties of peppers that I can find at the local nurseries.

This year I decided to take things a step further. I purchased a variety of both pepper and tomato seeds online and decided to grow them from seed, allowing me to pick and choose each type that I wanted in the garden for this summer. While it’s been a bit of a learning process and we’ve had a few fallen soldiers thus far, things are beginning to come together. It’s been a fun way to look forward to this year’s growing season.

Hazardous Location Cabinet Coolers

Last year was a big year for EXAIR’s Cabinet Cooling product line, in November  we launched our first Hazardous Location Cabinet CoolersEXAIR has always been a leading supplier in compressed air-based Cabinet Coolers, now we have expanded on that to work in the most high-risk conditions.

When a Hazardous Location Cabinet Cooler is used in conjunction with a purge system, they will keep electrical equipment at the desired operating temperature to protect and lengthen the lifetime of pricey controls and power supplies.

Electrical equipment can cause explosions in certain atmospheres. Equipment used in areas where explosive concentrations of dusts or vapors may exist must be equipped with special wiring and other electrical components for safety purposes. Hazardous (classified) locations such as these might exist in aircraft hangars, gasoline stations, paint-finishing locations or grain bins. EXAIR’s Hazardous Location Cabinet Coolers have been approved and tested by UL for use in the following areas:

Class I Div 1&2 – Groups A, B, C, and D

  • Class I Areas refer to the presence of flammable gases or vapors in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures. Class I Div 1 will have ignitable concentrations of flammable gases present during the course of normal operations. This is level of approval is one that differentiates the EXAIR Hazardous Location Cabinet Coolers from much of the competition. Class 1 Div 2 areas will have flammable gasses or vapors present only in the event of an accident or during unusual operating conditions.

Class II Div 1&2 – Groups E, F, and G

  • Class II areas are locations in which combustible dust may exist. The end user shall avoid installation of the device in a Class II environment where dust may be readily disturbed from the exhausts of the Hazardous Location Cabinet Cooler. Any dust formed in the vicinity of the cooler must be cleaned regularly.

Class III

  • Class III areas are locations that will have ignitable fibers or flyings present. This is common within the textile industry.

The Cabinet Cooler also carries a temperature rating of T3C, meaning it cannot be installed near any materials that could auto-ignite at temperatures in excess of 320°F.

NEW From EXAIR! The Hazardous Location Cabinet Cooler – For Use In Classified Areas

EXAIR is always focused on releasing new products and improving on existing product lines, and 2018 has been no different! Earlier on this year we introduced the New Super Air Scraper as an accessory to our 2” Flat Nozzles and Safety Air Guns. Just last month, EXAIR has also introduced a new line of products to the Cabinet Cooler family: The Hazardous Location Cabinet Cooler.

EXAIR’s Hazardous Location Cabinet Coolers are engineered for use with purged (not included) electrical enclosures. The HazLoc Cabinet Coolers are not purged and pressurized control systems and should not be relied upon nor used in place of a purged and pressurized controller. They are meant for use in conjunction with a purged and pressurized control system. These systems have been approved and tested by UL for use in the following areas:
