No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzle Wins Gold!

It is a very sad day for me at EXAIR… No, I’m not retiring or leaving the company, but today is my last day to write about Plant Engineering Product of the Year Awards …for this year. It has been quite an honor to write about four of our best innovations from the last year over the past weeks.  In case you missed the entries, you can click on the these links to read more about our other 2013 award winners: 316 Stainless Steel Dual Cabinet Coolers, 1 Inch Flat Super Air Nozzle or the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac. nodrip_EF Today’s post is about the No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzle, which the readers of the Plant Engineering magazine bestowed the gold award for fluid handling products.  EXAIR’s Liquid Atomizing Nozzles combine the liquid of your choice with compressed air to create a mist of atomized liquid.  The external mix nozzles have the highest liquid flow rate of any of EXAIR’s Liquid Atomizing Nozzles with flow rates up to 60 GPH.  They are a great solution for applications where independent air and liquid control is required.  Additionally, more viscous fluids can be used with the external mixing of the nozzle than either the internal mixing or siphon fed nozzles.  External Mixing Nozzles can be used to atomize liquids up to 800 centipoise. IMG_4031   In addition to the benefits of the external mix atomizing nozzle, this spray nozzle features a valve to positively stop liquid flow, when the compressed air drops below 30 psig. Any time you need to maintain a smooth finish or are spraying an expensive liquid, the no drip function can be invaluable to preventing rework, and ensuring a quality finish on each and every product.  The EXAIR no drip function is patent pending and does not require an additional air line to control the no drip mechanism, simplifying installation and functionality.

Questions for Selecting an Atomizing Spray Nozzle

Did you know that the air and liquid caps of EXAIR Atomizing Nozzles are interchangeable? Maybe you do. But, do you know which parts are interchangeable? And, did you know that EXAIR Application Engineers have a quick reference chart for such information?

When it comes to liquid spraying, our customers will write to me for application assistance, technical specifications, and potential uses for Atomizing Nozzles. Sometimes the need is for new methods to apply liquid in an existing application.

This was the case in the photo above. The end user needed to apply a thin line of paint on a rubber extrusion. After the rubber is dried, it needs to be marked for easy identification during later handling. Using an AN1010SS, the end user has the option to apply atomized paint, and to automate the process so that paint is applied only as needed.

Atomizing Nozzles are also suitable for dust suppression (for example, at a waste transfer system), humidification (such as soften wood for processing), improving costly liquid usage, or spraying oil lubricant.
The best way to categorize an application for use with an Atomizing Nozzle is through a series of (5) questions.

  1. What is the desired spray pattern?
  2. What is the area size to be covered?
  3. How much liquid flow is required?
  4. Is there a pressurized liquid source?
  5. What is the viscosity of the fluid to be atomized?

Back to School in June

This month I returned to EXAIR, after a three year hiatus. I had originally worked at EXAIR as a student, while I was attending the University of Cincinnati as part of a co-op program, so I thought I would be well versed in EXAIR’S products. EXAIR already had air knives, air nozzles, vortex tubes, Cabinet Cooler systems, Static Eliminators, vacuum generators, air operated conveyors, and so on. What else could they add to utilize compressed air?

Well, as our regular readers will be quick to point out, I was sorely mistaken – EXAIR has added and changed many things. Not only did they re-imagine, improve, or add to existing product lines with products such as the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac, Chip Shields, and the 1” Flat air nozzle but they have added whole new products lines like the Atomizing Spray Nozzle, which use liquid and compressed air to form a mist of liquid for precisely tuned applications. All models of nozzles are made from stainless steel for durability and corrosion resistance. The nozzles are completely adjustable by changing the ratio of air pressure and liquid pressure, or the liquid can be fed by gravity or siphoned using the compressed air. The nozzles use two different mixing methods: internal or external. There is also the choice of models which use a pressurized liquid source or siphon fed nozzles for a non-pressurized liquid. Each mixing methods supports several patterns and liquid flows rates. This wide range of products and adjustability give EXAIR the ability to help with thousands of applications, but I felt a little like Billy in the following clip.

EXAIR Atomizing Nozzle Replaces High Pressure Pump Sprayer in Application

Our customer in the automation/tool making industry has a need to spray a mold release type agent onto some specialized tooling they have developed and are testing. Originally, the customer had planned to use some sort of pressurized sprayer similar to those used in a garden. After some initial tests to prove the concept, the customer found that the moving mechanical parts of the sprayer became fouled by the release agent. And cleaning the internal parts was not easy to do.

In their search for a more permanent solution, the customer came across EXAIR Atomizing Nozzles. After going through some application type questions to narrow the focus down to one model, we determined that the customer would be best served by model AF1010SS (Internal Mix, Flat Fan Pattern Atomizing Nozzle). The customer had a couple of questions about the nozzle in order to gain some acceptance of the recommendation.

  1. Is it possible to disassemble the nozzle and clean it completely?  The answer is yes, the Atomizing Nozzles can be completely disassembled to allow for cleaning, maintenance or replacement of worn parts.
  2. Are the nozzles solvent resistant? The answer is also yes; the Atomizing Nozzles are made of AISI303 type stainless steel and can be cleaned with any normal solvent based cleaner.

Earlier in this article, I mentioned that we went through some application type questions. Here is a list of general questions that we normally ask a customer about their application in order to determine which in our selection would be best suited.

  1. What is the volume of liquid flow needed for the application?
  2. What is the viscosity of the liquid being applied?
  3. What are the required spray pattern, size and shape required?
  4. Is the liquid under pressure (by pump or pressure pot)?  If so, what is the liquid pressure?
