A little while back, I was contacted by a customer who was looking for a way to clean chips and debris out of tapped holes in an engine block. They were familiar with our products, having used them in several different areas in their plant, and had done some early research into our Air Nozzles.
They were considering using our small M4 Back Blow Air Nozzle in the process. The Back Blow Air Nozzles produce a 360° airflow that blows away from the end of the nozzle and in many cases, are the ideal solution for treating the inside diameter of hose, pipe, machined holes, etc. These unique nozzles, eliminate the concern of forcing particulate further down into a machined hole or the safety issue of blowing material out of the opposite end of an open tube or pipe.
In this particular case, having the material blown out of the hole increased the risk of possible cross contamination somewhere else in the engine block so they were also thinking of incorporating some type of recovery system like our Chip Vac or one of our Line Vacs but were concerned with having to use two separate devices.

This question comes up a good amount when a customer calls in and asks about an EXAIR Product. What else do I need in order to get this thing up and running. It will depend some on the application the customer is trying to solve and some on the equipment the customer may (or may not) have in house, and some on how convenient and easy the customer would like to make the whole process. Let us look at the Industrial Housekeeping products, more specifically the Reversible Drum Vac Systems. (Mainly because this is the most recent product I have had a customer ask what else he needs to buy.)
The customer had already chosen a 55 gallon system (other systems available include a 30 and 110 gallon). When we look at the three different 55 gallon systems we offer, there is a clear difference in the number of items included in each kit. The #6196 is a basic Reversible Drum Vac Kit. For a unit like this, all you need to do is to provide a compressed air source and a tightly sealed 55 gallon steel drum. The picture below will show each item that is included in the kit.
If you are worried about some liquid spills on the floor and you would like to get some extra pick up tools and a dolly for the steel drum you are providing, then the #6296 Deluxe Reversible Drum Vac System is for you. It will include everything from the basic system plus, a drum dolly, Spill Recovery Kit, magnetic tool holder, and extra plastic tools. Again, the only items you will need to supply are the air compressor, and the tightly sealed 55 gallon drum.
The final solution that EXAIR offers is everything you need, the whole kit and caboodle if you will. This kit prevents sourcing compressed air supply line and a closed top drum. It’s all in the box – with the exception of an air compressor. In this short story, our customer operates multiple water jet cutting machines. They have slurry buckets stationed at each machine. When the slurry bucket becomes full, they want to empty the bucket and dispose of the slurry.
The customer wanted to use the model 6198 Chip Trapper to perform the function of filtering the Boron Carbide from the water component of the slurry. Boron Carbide is a very hard material used for making armor plating for everything from bullet proof vests to tank armor. Being such a hard material, the abrasive factor is really high. They were concerned about the abrasive nature of the material and contacted me to check and see if this material would present a problem for our system. Turns out that the Chip Trapper will operate just fine without any degrading of performance. The reason is that there are no moving parts that could be worn by the abrasive material moving through. In fact, the abrasive material never comes into contact with the pump of the Chip Trapper. The slurry is directed straight into a 5 micron filtering bag where the solids are pulled out. The remaining water is pumped out of the Chip Trapper into a water treatment system for proper disposal.
The customer did have a few questions regarding what was included with model 6198 Chip Trapper. The answer is basically, everything you would need to get the unit assembled and operational is included with the Chip Vac. The only input required from the customer is the compressed air utility which is in reasonable supply for this customer’s facility.
The customer placed their order with me directly and asked for a tracking number which was sent followed by the invoice which he needed to expense his credit card purchase.
If you have an application where you need to vacuum up an abrasive solid that is mixed in with water or some other non-flammable fluid, give the Chip Trapper consideration. You will be glad you did.
