EXAIR’s Industrial Housekeeping Products are Portable

I had noticed somewhat of a trend in my inquiries regarding our Industrial Housekeeping Products of late. It seems that customers want to use our Chip Vac, Heavy Duty Dry Vac or perhaps the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac with a really long vacuum hose. I’m talking like 50 or 60 feet worth of suction hose. And when I ask the customers why they want such a long hose, they say it is so they can reach all parts of their shop from a central location.

It did not occur to me until now that folks may not realize that, in fact, all of our Industrial Housekeeping Products are made to be moved around the shop, just like you would an electric shop vacuum with casters.

All of our Industrial Housekeeping Products have an industrial drum dolly available for them from the smallest 5 gallon sizes up to the big 110 gallon units. In fact, our Chip Trapper product comes with one included as part of the base system.

If you have a need to vacuum debris from multiple locations, moving the Industrial Housekeeping unit around the shop allows you to keep your vacuum hose as short as possible (we have 10 ft. hoses). With this configuration, you do not suffer the line losses associated with trying to create a vacuum across a 60 ft. long vacuum hose which results in lost performance. Dealing with a 10 ft. hose is also a lot less hassle than a much longer one.  It is a better idea to use a longer compressed air hose to supply your Industrial Housekeeping Vacuum system with compressed air and roll it around to each area where you need to use it. Compressed air travels through hoses much more readily than vacuum flows do.

EXAIR Products Help Clean a Sandblasting Room

I’m sure there are any number of things that you could do incorrectly running a blasting room, but I became familiar with one failure mode this week: Clean Up.

I don’t know much about blasting rooms, but I know folks usually say this when it’s over –  clean up! That is a phrase I have heard once or twice in my life. We had a customer call in this week, who ran large pieces, one at a time through his sand blasting room, and needed to clean up after each operation. He had used electrically powered industrial vacuum cleaners in the past, but they did not hold up. He had a cyclonic separator in place, but enough dust and debris passed through the separator and into the impellers to create a maintenance nightmare. The problem had gotten so bad that before calling us he was using a broom and scoop method. The clean up was taking longer than the process, which made him unable to meet their production schedule, when the vacuum was down.

EXAIR’s solution the Heavy Duty Dry Vac (HDDV), model 6397. The HD Dry Vac fits onto a 55 gallon drum and uses compressed air to create a powerful vacuum, capable of moving over 50 pounds of ceramic tumbling media per minute.  The 6397 comes with a drum, drum dolly, 20 feet of compressed air hose, heavy duty accessory kit, and 10 feet of static eliminating vacuum hose, which allows the HDDV to clean easily in a 25 foot radius. Large enough to reach every corner of the customer’s 25′ X 25′ room.

I thought this would be great solution to the customer’s problem, but of course, the customer had one more wrinkle in his process.  His hopper for the blasting media was on the roof of his sand blasting room 12 feet in the air, and he needed to recycle the blasting media he collected. I can understand not wanting a new process to lift a 55 gallon drum up to the roof of his sand blasting booth after every part. Unfortunately, the HDDV, model 6397 would not be the best solution to vacuum and convey the blast media back into the hopper – but we do manufacture a solution, the EXAIR Line Vac.

The Heavy Duty Line Vac, model 150200, can easily transfer product up 12 feet in the air. After cleaning the floor of the facility, the customer setup a conveyance station with a 2″ Heavy Duty Line Vac to move the material to the hopper in the top of the roof. We were able to reuse the cyclonic separator he had from his electric vacuum to contain the material and release the air that is moved through the 2″ Heavy Duty Line Vac.

After using the EXAIR product, his cleaning time greatly decreased  Also, the Spill Recovery kit that comes with every 6397 Premium Heavy Duty Drum Vac greatly reduced the wear and tear on the employees backs and knees.  Finally, he effectively recycled his blast material with the 2″ Heavy Duty Line Vac air operated conveyor system.

What Else Do I Need?

This question comes up a good amount when a customer calls in and asks about an EXAIR Product.   What else do I need in order to get this thing up and running.   It will depend some on the application the customer is trying to solve and some on the equipment the customer may (or may not) have in house, and some on how convenient and easy the customer would like to make the whole process. Let us look at the Industrial Housekeeping products, more specifically the Reversible Drum Vac Systems. (Mainly because this is the most recent product I have had a customer ask what else he needs to buy.)

The customer had already chosen a 55 gallon system (other systems available include a 30 and 110 gallon). When we look at the three different 55 gallon systems we offer, there is a clear difference in the number of items included in each kit.  The #6196 is a basic Reversible Drum Vac Kit.  For a unit like this, all you need to do is to provide a compressed air source and a tightly sealed 55 gallon steel drum. The picture below will show each item that is included in the kit.

If you are worried about some liquid spills on the floor and you would like to get some extra pick up tools and a dolly for the steel drum you are providing, then the #6296 Deluxe Reversible Drum Vac System is for you.   It will include everything from the basic system plus, a drum dolly, Spill Recovery Kit, magnetic tool holder, and extra plastic tools.  Again, the only items you will need to supply are the air compressor, and the tightly sealed 55 gallon drum.

The final solution that EXAIR offers is everything you need, the whole kit and caboodle if you will. This kit prevents sourcing compressed air supply line and a closed top drum. It’s all in the box – with the exception of an air compressor. In the #6396 Premium Reversible Drum Vac System you will received the drum, everything in the Deluxe Kit, but some of the tools that were plastic get upgraded to aluminum tools.   This gives you the complete solution with a few clicks on our website.

Customer Uses Chip Trapper to Recover Boron Carbide from Slurry for Disposal

In this short story, our customer operates multiple water jet cutting machines. They have slurry buckets stationed at each machine. When the slurry bucket becomes full, they want to empty the bucket and dispose of the slurry.

The customer wanted to use the model 6198 Chip Trapper to perform the function of filtering the Boron Carbide from the water component of the slurry. Boron Carbide is a very hard material used for making armor plating for everything from bullet proof vests to tank armor. Being such a hard material, the abrasive factor is really high. They were concerned about the abrasive nature of the material and contacted me to check and see if this material would present a problem for our system. Turns out that the Chip Trapper will operate just fine without any degrading of performance. The reason is that there are no moving parts that could be worn by the abrasive material moving through. In fact, the abrasive material never comes into contact with the pump of the Chip Trapper. The slurry is directed straight into a 5 micron filtering bag where the solids are pulled out. The remaining water is pumped out of the Chip Trapper into a water treatment system for proper disposal.

The customer did have a few questions regarding what was included with model 6198 Chip Trapper. The answer is basically, everything you would need to get the unit assembled and operational is included with the Chip Vac. The only input required from the customer is the compressed air utility which is in reasonable supply for this customer’s facility.

The customer placed their order with me directly and asked for a tracking number which was sent followed by the invoice which he needed to expense his credit card purchase.

If you have an application where you need to vacuum up an abrasive solid that is mixed in with water or some other non-flammable fluid, give the Chip Trapper consideration. You will be glad you did.

Heavy Duty HEPA Vac Used For Walnut Shell Blasting Media Recovery

I was working recently with a customer who performs a variety of media blasting services. Their services involve cleaning delicate molds, armatures and electric motors prior to being re-wound. They also get into a variety of other applications that involve the need to clean coatings or other foreign matter from delicate surfaces such as jewelry, watches and similar items. They use walnut shell material as it works well without etching or otherwise damaging these surfaces.

The customer contacted EXAIR as they were looking for a reasonable way to clean up this very dusty material after they have used it. In fact, they re-use the material multiple times and needed a good way to collect it back into a central tank without creating huge dust clouds that would present a breathing hazard to their operators.

Our customer contacted us after they saw we had the new Heavy Duty HEPA Vac as part of our Industrial Housekeeping Products offering now. They had a few initial questions regarding how well it actually traps the very fine materials that it vacuums. I had explained to them that we had conducted several tests on a variety of materials including everything from metal chips down to powder the consistency of baking flour. When tested with the very fine materials, we found there were no visible emissions through the filtering system and back into the atmosphere above the drum lid where the exhaust flow is located. That discussion was enough to convince this customer that the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac was the right product for them. Previously, they had been trying to use the typical electric shop vacuums that you get from the local hardware stores. While these work OK for a while, they get clogged up with the fine dust very quickly. Also, the fine dust makes its way into the electric motor causing over heating conditions and eventually failure. The Heavy Duty HEPA Vac has no moving parts to wear out. That was another advantage the customer saw as positive for their purposes.

Since buying model 6199 Heavy Duty HEPA Vac a month ago, our customer has reported back to me their success at using the unit for cleanup and recycling. Having the capability of a large, 55 gallon drum reservoir was another feature that made their job a lot easier.
