EXAIR’s line of Heavy Duty Line Vacs are our most powerful of our pneumatic conveyors. It is very similar to our standard Lind Vacs, but the generator holes have been drilled out to boost the performance. You can also modify a standard Line Vac to match the performance of a Heavy Duty. In addition to an increased performance, the Heavy Duty Line Vac is constructed of a hardened alloy steel that helps to prevent premature wear that can occur when conveying abrasive media.

I recently worked with a customer that had a Clean Sweep vacuum that they had purchased and were experiencing premature wear on the conveyor that was installed on the system. They were using it to reclaim blasting media that they use for several of their processes in the facility. The conveyor that was installed in the Clean Sweep vacuum system was constructed of aluminum and was quickly wearing out. By the time they found EXAIR, they had already replaced this unit twice and were getting close to needing a third replacement. A quick search of the internet brought him to our blog page where he saw this blog post about the Heavy Duty Line Vac. A quick review of the drawing for the vacuum system and we were able to identify that a 2” Model 151200 Heavy Duty Threaded Line Vac would match up perfectly and allow for a quick and easy installation. They have a total of (3) of these systems in their warehouse and wanted to try one out first. Once the warehouse manager returned from vacation he intended to purchase another two to replace the other units before they too wore out. The operators were pretty pleased at the boosted performance that the Heavy Duty Line Vac offered, and management was pleased that they no longer have to worry about one of their vacuum systems wearing out. Another satisfied customer!

Guess What Today Is?

Well, if everything went as planned, this blog is actually being posted on Friday. However, I’m writing it on Wednesday.

Our daily blogs are written a couple of days in advance, so that they can be reviewed. None of us ever draft anything that’s inappropriate. Not REALLY inappropriate, anyway…but they are indeed checked for grammar, content, accuracy, and quality. I’m probably the most conceited about my writing ability (and for good reason…see?) but I’m still humble enough to appreciate any suggestions for improvement. Heck, if they make it look better before anyone else sees it, I get to take credit for that, too. It’s not like you readers know what gets changed.  If you want to know what I’m like sans edit review, you can always follow me on Twitter.

If our system of blog review and posting proves anything, it’s that it never hurts to run your plan by someone else with experience in what you’re trying to do. Case in point:

I had the pleasure of discussing an Industrial Vacuum application with a customer recently. One of our Chip Vacs had been in use within their shop for a long time, and they were quite pleased with its durability and longevity. They had begun working with some hardened steel product a while back, and, over time, those chips & shavings had worn through the Chip Vac’s aluminum body.  They wanted to order a replacement Chip Vac unit, and perhaps keep another in stock for when that one wore out, and were simply calling for price and availability.

Our solution, instead, was to provide a Heavy Duty Dry Vac. They didn’t need the complete system; just the Model 6097 Heavy Duty Dry Vac unit itself, since it’s dimensionally identical to the Chip Vac. They just unscrewed the Chip Vac on the drum lid, and threaded in the Heavy Duty Dry Vac.

It’s too soon to know for sure, but all signs point to a long, useful life. In fact, we’ve borne that theory out with in-house testing with numerous abrasive materials. We posted a video a while back, showing the effects of abrasive material conveyed through our Line Vac products: both the standard aluminum, and the hardened alloy Heavy Duty ones.  You can see the results for yourself, here.

Heavy Duty Line Vac for Blasting Media Recovery

Many times we will get the call from customers who are in the media blasting industry. Media blasting is used in many cases to clean or strip debris, residue, paint or other contamination from the surface of a variety of parts. This cleaning process is generally used to prepare a surface to receive further preparations or perhaps even a coat of primer or paint.

The media blasting process works very well. The only downside is that once the media is spent through the nozzle, it bounces off the part and lands on the ground or any other horizontal surface in the blasting room. So, clean-up after a session of blasting can become a real headache for the operators. Generally, they will want to recover the media for re-use as it can be quite expensive to purchase.

That’s where EXAIR comes in with our Heavy Duty Line Vac product. The Heavy Duty Line Vac has exceptionally high suction capability to move even the densest of blasting media back up into the supply hopper so it can be run through the system over and over. The highly abrasion resistant material of the Heavy Duty Line Vac has been tested with aggressive media such as ground glass and ground garnet and has a proven record of tolerance for moving such material without excessive wear. Other materials of construction like aluminum, stainless steel or hard anodized coatings will wear and degrade – the hardened alloy of the Heavy Duty Line Vac is the best choice for abrasive materials. 

Normally, customers in this industry will opt for the 1-1/2” or 2” model of our Heavy Duty Line Vac for their post blasting clean-up processes. It really takes a task that is true drudgery and turns it into a simple task. It takes the pain away for sure.

Heavy Duty Line Vac Recycles Spent Abrasive Blast Media

I have run into another very good use of the Heavy Duty Line Vac and wanted to share this with you. A customer had contacted me from overseas. His interest was to apply Heavy Duty Line Vac to his abrasive media blast cabinets. The cabinets have a hopper filled with media that feeds a spray gun which accelerates the media toward a target work piece to remove anything from paint, to oxidation, oil and any other stubborn stains that might persist. That hopper is filled with Aluminum Oxide powder which is very abrasive and thus very good at the task of abrasive blasting.

The problem was in determining how best to replenish the hopper without having to stop and shovel the media back up to the feed hopper. In comes the EXAIR Heavy Duty Line Vac model 150125. The Heavy Duty Line Vac was fitted to a pipe which is connected to the tapered bottom of the media blasting cabinet. As the media falls down into the bottom, the Line Vac creates a powerful suction which conveys the Aluminum Oxide powder back up to the hopper for re-use.

The key to success for this application is the construction of the Heavy Duty Line Vac. These models are constructed from a hardened alloy material. This material  makes for our most abrasion resistant model series available. Applications like this one where a stainless steel Line Vac might last 3 months, a Heavy Duty model can last 18 to 24 months or more of constant usage. Results will vary depending on application factors but there is no doubt that the Heavy Duty Line Vac is a highly reliable and effective tool to have for abrasive media conveying.
