Application Spotlight! – Chip Vac

I haven’t done a spotlight in a while, so buckle up.  In these, I pull from the dozens of phone calls or emails and walk you through how we on the Application Engineering team select a product for a specific application!

In this week’s spotlight, we focus on a common scenario rather than an unusual application. Engaging in conversations about this topic is something we do frequently throughout the day here at EXAIR. CNC machines generate a significant amount of chips, and without an efficient management system, these chips can pose serious challenges. In this particular case, the customer operated a CNC machine equipped with two interchanging tombstones, allowing for one to be unloaded and loaded while the other remained within the machining envelope. This created a large issue when the fixtures and parts came out of the machining envelope where the chip management was located as the entire fixture and parts were covered in chips.

The solution we landed on was the EXAIR 55 Gallon Chip vac system. The operator would use the aluminum pick-up wand to clear the chips away prior to unloading the fixture. And since they dispose of their chips in 55 gallon drums, they just switch the top over to an empty drum and roll the full one to their recycling room.

EXAIR’s Chip Vac is a compressed air operated industrial duty vacuum designed specifically for vacuuming up chips and shavings. The powerful vacuum is suitable for use with metal, wood, or plastic chips and is designed to thread into the 2” NPT bung on standard drum lids. The Chip Vac can handle dry or wet chips from fixtures, floors and work surfaces of machining centers, lathes, saws, mills, and a variety of other industrial equipment.

Electrically powered vacuums or shop vacs are not designed to be operated in a rugged industrial environment. Filters clog, motors wear out, and you find yourself frequently replacing them. EXAIR’s Chip Vac has NO moving parts to wear out, doesn’t require maintenance, and needs nothing but a source of compressed air to operate. In addition, the sound level produced is half of that produced by an electric vacuum.

The Chip Vac is sold in systems both with and without the drum. EXAIR has 5, 30, 55, and 110 gallon systems available for a wide range of applications. If you already have spare drums in your facility, the Chip Vac is also available with just the lid assembly, Chip Vac, 10’ hose, tools, and filter bag to attach to the top of your own drums. All systems will include a drum lid with a locking right that easily fits onto the top of a standard open-top drum. It’s easy to remove and place onto another drum so that different materials can be easily kept separate for recycling. Recycling companies will pay a premium price for pre-sorted chips and shavings.

With the Chip Vac, it’s as easy as removing the lid and placing it onto a new drum in between jobs. Don’t waste your time fooling with and replacing electrical vacuum systems. Get yourself a vacuum designed for the job. One that will last you year after year!

New Patent for EXAIR’s EasySwitch Wet-Dry Vac

EXAIR’s EasySwitch® Wet-Dry Vac is an all-encompassing vacuum that simplifies the filter change process when switching from vacuuming a dry material to a liquid. Utilizing minimal compressed air, the EasySwitch is ideal for any application – wet, dry, light or heavy. The EasySwitch is now recognized as a patented EXAIR product which not only confirms it’s been intelligently engineered, but assures users they’re getting one of the most efficient and effective industrial vacuums on the market.

For critical dust containment, the HEPA EasySwitch Wet-Dry Vac System is your durable, reliable, compressed air operated solution!

Like all of EXAIR’s industrial housekeeping products, the EasySwitch has no moving parts or electric motors to wear out, so it will be able to handle the toughest industrial cleanup jobs with little to no maintenance. All you need to operate is filtered compressed air. And at only 79 dBA, the EasySwitch is quiet as well!

The EasySwitch is made for use with open-top steel 55 gallon drums. When in dry mode, it can use a standard filter or HEPA certified filter for critical dust containment. By releasing a single latch and removing these filters, you’re ready to go in liquid mode. This change can be completed in seconds!

We have three different systems available; our basic, Deluxe, and Premium.  The basic system will come with the selected filter (standard or HEPA), 10-foot (3m) vacuum hose, 20-foot (6.1m) compressed air hose, plastic tools, shutoff valve and gauge.  The HEPA filter models will also include a Pre-filter to help protect the HEPA medium from premature clogging.  The Deluxe system will include the items in the basic system with an upgraded anti-static vacuum hose, heavy-duty tools, a spill recovery kit, a tool-holder, and a drum dolly. Both the basic and Deluxe systems are great options if you have your own 55-gallon drum. The Premium system will include the items in the Deluxe system as well as a 55-gallon drum.

If you have tough industrial cleanup jobs with both wet and dry materials, our EasySwitch Wet-Dry Vac may be the all-in-one solution you need. Feel free to give any of our Application Engineers a call!

EXAIR’s Chip Vac Replaces Shop Vac for Brass Shavings and Chips

Here at EXAIR, we’re used to taking calls from customers that have grown tired of replacing electrical shop vacs used in manufacturing plants. The simple truth is, these shop vacs are not designed for rugged industrial use. Sure, they’re readily available and fairly cheap. But if they’re not designed for the task at hand, you’re wasting time and money continuing to invest in replacements.

Case Study: Heavy Duty Dry Vac for the Win!

A couple of months ago, I was speaking with a customer about improving a process in their facility. They were using electric shop vacs to vacuum up fiber and dust from around their operating equipment. The shop vacs that they were using were not very powerful, meaning it was taking operators a long time to get the job done. In addition, the vacs were prone to wearing out, leading to a need for frequent replacements – they had already gone through 13 in the last 12 months alone!

I was happy to recommend an EXAIR Heavy Duty Dry Vac. With no moving parts to wear out, our steel drum vacuum system was a one-time replacement. Even with the higher initial cost, taking into account we are eliminating the need to purchase replacements every month, the EXAIR drum vac will quickly pay for itself. The better vacuum performance also meant the operators were saving about 3.5 hours per week, leading to even more savings. The ROI on this change was less than 5 months. That’s a win!

In addition to the immediate savings, we also discussed EXAIR’s Case Study program. A typical case study involves collection of “before/after” data, quantifying the benefits of using EXAIR products. This can include, but is not necessarily limited to:

  • Compressed air consumption
  • Noise level
  • Safety (OSHA compliance)
  • Performance improvements
  • Product durability/longevity

My customer was able to quantify the benefits in both product durability and performance improvements. As an added benefit, upon successful completion of a case study, I was able to provide the option of a credit on the replacement products, or a discount on a subsequent order. Now it’s a win-win!

If you would like to discuss how EXAIR products can save you money, or if your application would be suitable for a case study, then give me a call!
