E-Vac Generators, Cups and Accessories

When it comes to our E-Vac vacuum generators and creating a successful design for you application EXAIR has the fundamentals. EXAIR’s compressed air powered E-Vacs are designed primarily for pick and place operations but also have other uses such as evacuating liquids and gasses from containers and holding workpieces in place. E-Vacs come in different sizes including an Adjustable E-Vac in order to dial in your vacuum and vacuum flow. EXAIR E-Vac generators are engineered for high efficiency and minimizing air consumption.

In-Line E-Vac Generators are compact and easily mount at the point of use. They can held in place by screwing them directly to your rigid compressed air line or by using one of our mounting clips. There are 7 models used with porous materials, such as carboard, with vacuum levels up to 21″ Hg and vacuum flows up to 18.5 SCFM. There are also 7 models to choose from for non-porous materials, such as glass, with vacuum levels up to 27″Hg and vacuum flow up to 15.8 SCFM.

Adjustable E-Vacs (below) allow easy adjustment, simply loosen the locknut and turn the exhaust to increase or decrease the vacuum flow. There are 4 sizes with vacuum up to 25″Hg and vacuum flow up to 81 SCFM. They are Engineered for high efficiency and minimize compressed air usage by adjusting the vacuum level to the application.

EXAIR has four cup styles to match and accommodate just about any size shape and material. Let’s look at the cups available and their characteristics:

Round Cups come in small and large sizes and work well with smooth flat surfaces . The round cups hold up well with time and grip well to vertical surfaces. Round cups without cleats are more flexible and work well in applications that do not require lifting heavy loads. Round cups with cleats

Oval Cups provide the most vacuum due to having a larger surface area. Shape matters: this is especially true for oval cups which have a higher suction power compared to round cups. The are designed to handle heavy objects such as flat rigid sheet materials.

Bellow Cups have an accordion shape and designed for textured, uneven surfaces. The folds are called convolutions and provide a collapsible area allowing the cup to compress when it touches an uneven surface.

Once you have selected the style and quantity of vacuum cups you can review the EXAIR Accessories that will compliment your project. EXAIR offers a variety of mufflers, tubing, check valves, fittings that will make it easier to build your vacuum system.

Additional Benefits To The Adjustable E-Vac Vacuum Generators

The EXAIR Adjustable E-Vacs are available in 4 different sizes to fit whatever your pick and place, vacuum holding, degassing, or vacuum evacuation process may call for. These units have been used in a multitude of applications and the Adjustable factor makes them versatile enough to fit a production line with changing needs.

These are all examples of how an E-Vac pick-and-place system is just a solenoid valve away from automation.

The Adjustable E-Vacs have a few benefits that may go unnoticed if one is not keen to exactly how they are constructed and function. This sets them apart from many vacuum generators. When dealing with vacuum generator applications such as pick and place, having a part that is always the same is easiest. This is not always the case. Sometimes it is not just the dimensions of the part that changes, sometimes the material changes or even the surface finish of the part. This is where the ability to change from a porous to non-porous vacuum generator is extremely helpful. Generally this means the material of the parts getting picked up will allow air flow through them (paper, cardboard, wood) or not (plastic, glass). A porous vacuum generator will pull more flow through the part material to hold the vacuum, a non-porous vacuum generator will pull less flow and achieve higher vacuum levels.

To better understand the difference between porous and non-porous, we’ve written about that. Check out Tyler Daniel’s blog on the difference between the two here. The beauty of the Adjustable E-Vac is that it can easily convert from porous to non-porous with a simple adjustment. This is a great feature for a job shop that may change materials they are cutting or engraving on their machines and need to adapt in a moments notice for the job at hand. This could also reduce the number of vacuum generator variances a store room may need to keep on hand for a series of production lines and help to reduce the chance an incorrect model is installed on a machine due to fewer variants.

Adjustable E-Vac

Another benefit which can be helpful in a production environment that has an E-Vac picking up dirty or debris ridden material is that the Adjustable E-Vacs can be disassembled and cleaned. Picking steel sheets off a laser cutter in order to remove the scrap that has a volume of spatter / dust can cause an accumulation of debris on the internals of any vacuum generator. By unscrewing the plug from the body the Adjustable E-Vac can be easily cleaned and all passageways maintained at a level to offer continual performance.

No matter what, the adjustability coupled with minimum components and fastener free disassembly of the unit are two great features that can help minimize machine downtime, lower number of parts kept on hand for machines, and ensure optimal performance no matter what the requirement is for the vacuum generator. A Simple Explanation of the Venturi Effect

The Venturi Effect was discovered by Italian physicist Giovanni Battista Venturi who lived between 1746 and 1822. In practice, there were a number of other physicists who were involved in the Venturi Effect but Giovanni Venturi is generally accepted as the first person to discover and explain the effect. So, what is the Venturi Effect, and how does it affect practical everyday living?

“A Venturi is a system for speeding the flow of the fluid by constricting it in a cone shape tube. In the restriction, the fluid increases its velocity, which reduces its pressure and produces a partial vacuum. As the fluid leaves the constriction, its pressure increases back to the ambient or pipe level.”

Any substance that flows is considered a fluid. This includes such things as water, shampoo, sunscreen, and even honey. Although not necessarily obvious, even gases, such as air, can be classified as fluids. So why would someone at EXAIR be talking about Venturi? Our E-Vacs use the Venturi Effect to create vacuum

For most people the Venturi Effect is difficult to understand because you might expect the pressure to increase when a fluid is pushed through a restricted area. The fact that the increase in velocity is greater than any potential increase in pressure means that there is a net increase in velocity and a net reduction in pressure. The ability to mix-and-match certain fluids and gases via this process is relatively straightforward because the reduced pressure allows other substances to be sucked in through a connecting pipe at a rate of your choice.

EXAIR uses the Venturi Effect and other principles within the development of our engineered products. If you have questions or need a solution please call 800.903.9247 or visit us on www.EXAIR.com and let us help you.

EXAIR E-Vac Vacuum Generator, How to Pick the Correct One

EXAIR’s compressed air powered E-Vac single stage vacuum generators are a low cost way create vacuum for many operations including- pick and place, clamping, chucking, alignment, lifting, and many others.

The E-Vac provide instantaneous response and are commonly used for pick and place operations.

EXAIR offers the In-Line and Adjustable style of E-Vacs. Both are compact and easy to mount at point of use. With 18 total models available, there is sure to be one that meets any application.  To determine when to use the Adjustable or the In-Line, see this Blog by Russ!

The biggest factor and the first place to start is to determine if the part to be lifted is porous (Example, cardboard) or non-porous (Example, plastic sheet)

  • Porous materials require a low vacuum generator which produces a lower vacuum in exchange for higher vacuum flow which is capable of maintaining a good vacuum level through material that allows air to flow through itself.
  • Non-Porous materials are best suited to use the high vacuum generator which is capable of producing more powerful vacuum for the application.

If you want to see them both in action check this video out!

Both the Low Vacuum (for non-porous material) and High Vacuum (for porous material) E-Vacs come in 7 different sizes, ranging from light to very strong vacuum capabilities, to match any application. Special Kits are  available as a way to experiment with an assortment of vacuum cups to determine the best configuration.
