Variable Speed Drive Air Compressors

Compressed air is a clean utility that is used in many different ways, and it is much safer than electrical or hydraulic systems.  But most people think that compressed air is free, and it is most certainly not.  Because of the expense, compressed air is considered to be a fourth utility in manufacturing plants.  I did write a blog earlier titled, “Basics of Compressors”.  There are two main types of speeds for air compressors; fixed and variable.  In this blog, I will cover the Variable Speed Drive (VSD) Air Compressors. 

The VSD Air Compressor controls the speed of the electrical motor by supplying different frequencies and voltages.  It can range from around 20% capacity to 100% capacity depending on the system requirement.  With most systems, the amount of air flow fluctuates throughout the day.  With a VSD Air Compressor, it can run at lesser horsepower ratings for lower demands.  If your plant operates at different compressed air demand levels, the VSD air compressor can help cut the electrical cost. 

 As an example, let’s say you have a 20-horsepower air compressor which can produce roughly 100 SCFM of compressed air.  If the demand drops to 20 SCFM, then the VSD can change the ratio of the electric motor to run like a 4-horsepower compressor.  And a 4-horsepower compressor uses much less electricity to generate compressed air.

Static and Variance

Okay, folks, it is time we seriously discuss how dry it is here in the MidWest right now and how much static there is anywhere we go. The dry air is the lack of moisture due to heat being used inside facilities, and thus, the static ramps up. If you didn’t understand much of those statements then it is okay, we have a whitepaper that covers the basics. The seriousness of the static in my home has reached critical mass. We are past the funny shocks and hair standing on the end humor side of static. We have reached a critical mass where it is no longer funny, my coffee is being affected by the ambient level of static charge.

That’s right, the coffee grinder I received for Christmas is riddled with static. Now, it is still functioning, thank goodness for that. The container that houses the fresh ground, the nectar of the gods making crushed beans, is made of polycarbonate material and is prime to hold a static charge. As the dry coffee beans are ground into obliteration there is a tremendous amount of friction which causes a very high charge on the ground bean discharge that goes into a very dry non-conductive container. This means the grinds all pile up and then also cling to every single surface on the interior of the small container. That’s fine, it still does not affect the performance of the grinder. Then, when I open the lid there is a detachment that happens and a small amount of that highly charged ground bean will start to dance all over the surfaces of the container, including outside of it and onto the counter. The end result is I have to constantly wipe up coffee grinds and I am wasting the grinds that give me the caffeine I intend to consume.

The dilemma here is that I don’t want to run compressed air into my kitchen, already have one project going on in the house. Secondly, my wife would not think it would be as entertaining as I would. So, I need a non-compressed air-assisted static eliminator that can plug straight into a voltage available here in the US, and let’s face it, coffee is a global consumption so 120 VAC and 230 VAC would be preferred. Enter, the VariStat Benchtop Ionizer.

The Varistat would easily mount to the wall over my coffee generation station and could be adjusted from a gentle breeze to where it doesn’t disturb the coffee grinds all the way up to a forceful blast in case the need would arise. I could also vary the balance of the unit to meet the atmospheric and surface conditions of the container.

Okay, so I’m probably not going to buy a Varistat Benchtop Ionizer and mount it to my kitchen wall. I would easily recommend it to any kind of hopper loader or regrind operation where the static is causing the materials to cling to the containers or causing nuisance shocks. This unit is easily sat on a bench top or mounted to a wall or ceiling over a hopper or workstation. Thanks to the operation of standard 120 VAC or 230 VAC it can function nearly anywhere in the world that has electricity.

Adjustable E-Vacs For All Kinds Of Vacuum Applications

EXAIR makes three different engineered compressed air products that are capable of pulling vacuum:

  • Air Amplifiers generate a very high vacuum flow (up to 25 times the compressed air flow rate) but not very much vacuum head. This makes them great for fumes, smoke, and airborne dust.
  • Line Vacs generate a moderate vacuum flow and head so they can easily convey bulk solids.
  • E-Vac Vacuum Generators generate a high vacuum head, but not a lot of vacuum flow. They’re commonly used with Vacuum Cups in pick-and-place applications, or a number of other applications where you measure the required vacuum in inches of mercury (the Air Amplifiers’ and Line Vacs’ vacuum heads are measured in inches of water.)

Our Adjustable E-Vac Vacuum Generators are the ones that typically fall into the “number of other applications” category above. While the In-Line E-Vacs are compact and reliably generate rated vacuum on demand, the Adjustable E-Vacs have some distinct advantages in certain cases:

Larger throat diameter. In-Line E-Vacs have a very tight throat, which generally doesn’t matter if they’re just hooked to Vacuum Cups that’ll be placed on a relatively clean surface. The wider throat of the Adjustable E-Vacs means that they can pass small debris from less-than-pristine surfaces that a Vacuum Cup might lift, or shavings that might fall into a work holding fixture on a machine tool. They can even pass liquids, so they’re sometimes used for small spill cleanup.

Adjustability. It’s right in the name, of course, but it IS a big deal. While you can regulate the supply pressure of almost any compressed air operated device to vary the performance level, you can thread the plug into, or out of, the body of an Adjustable E-Vac to literally put it in a whole new performance band. This is beneficial if you’re picking up, or holding down, pieces of different sizes, shapes, and weights. Just loosen the locking collar, make the adjustment, tighten it back up, and it’s ready for use.
