This news broke yesterday*, and, little did I know, the practice has been around for quite some time…

The folks at Oxford pick their Word Of The Year by, primarily, an increase in the frequency of usage. Turns out, they search a variety of mainstream media sources, and count how many times the word appears, per billion words. “Selfie” was the runaway hit this year, going from a frequency of about 500 appearances per billion words in January 2013, to over 5,000 appearances per billion words in October.

Chip Vac Clears Cast Iron Chips from Fixtures

On a recent trip to India, I had the opportunity to visit a few of our end user clients in the field to see how they were using our products. On one occasion, we visited a tractor assembly plant. One department in the plant was responsible for machining the finished surfaces of the cast iron parts that made up the sub-frame of the tractor. The surfaces that mated together needed to have a finish cut made on them so that the gaskets used could seal properly on a flat surface.

The original problem was that once a part was completed with the machining cycle, the cast iron chips remained in the fixture that holds the part. This material interfered with proper mounting of the next raw part into the machining fixture. The customer then tried the EXAIR Chip Vac System to remove the chips from their fixture between each cycle. The Chip Vac System performed excellently for this task. And so the customer decided to up-fit all of their machining centers with Chip Vac Systems.

The advantages of the Chip Vac System in this case were:

  1. They could turn their existing 55 gallon, open top drum in to a collection tank by applying the Chip Vac lid and filter assembly. The drums were not being used prior to applying Chip Vac, so it was viewed as a good re-purposing of the drums.
  2. There are no moving parts to wear out with the Chip Vac. Motors, brushes and impellers used on traditional electric vacs simply do not stand up to industrial use as in these cases.
  3. The sound level produced by a Chip Vac is far lower than an electric vacuum. There are presently no such ministry of health rule in India which govern this issue, but the operators were definitely happy about less noise and so was the shop foreman.
  4. The 10 ft. hose easily reached inside the machine center to allow for quick and easy access to the fixture for vacuuming task.

The Case Is Made for Heavy Duty HEPA Vac

I had an interesting discussion with an overseas customer recently. They had come to us looking for a commercial offer for our Vac-U-Gun product. Then were asking about our Deep Hole Vac-U-Gun product. It was one of those scenarios where the customer appears to know what they want and have their models all picked out.

We have developed a natural curiosity for how folks are using our products around here so I asked him about his application. He seemed to know what he wanted, I just wanted to know how he was going to use the product in case I needed it for a future conversation to relate product usefulness to someone else. It turns out that his intention was to use the Vac-U-Gun to vacuum up dried coffee creamer in their production environment.

You may be thinking that we do promote the Vac-U-Gun for such cleaning applications. The issue here was that this was the only thing the Vac-U-Gun was going to be used for and they had quite a bit of volume to suck up on any given day. Upwards of 20 lbs. of the stuff.  That’s a lot of creamer!

After we had our discussion, I made a suggestion that the customer seriously consider using another of our products that would be better suited to picking up dusty and powdery product. That would be our Heavy Duty HEPA Vac. While the Vac-U-Gun would have certainly picked up the product, the filtering media of the bag would have quickly become clogged and they would have had to continuously clean it throughout each daily use. This isn’t a scenario that I would want our customers to be saddled with when trying to purchase a solution from our company. So, I began talking about the features of the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac.

The most valuable feature that I felt would be helpful for this customer was the fact that we utilize a thick, pre-filter material to catch a large portion of any dust that might come through. The Heavy Duty HEPA Vac is able to vacuum up a whole 55 gallon drum worth of dusty material before cleaning of the pre-filter becomes necessary. And even then, all that is necessary is to knock it against the inside wall of a garbage can to get the bulk of the dust to drop off. Then it is right back to the vacuum system and ready for more use.

With this in mind, I knew that the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac system would be more than adequate to help this customer make his cleaning operations much more effective and easier to perform. The customer is still weighing his options at this point but is now seriously considering a tool that would be a much better option than their current method of a broom and dust pan.

Heavy Duty HEPA Vac Used For Walnut Shell Blasting Media Recovery

I was working recently with a customer who performs a variety of media blasting services. Their services involve cleaning delicate molds, armatures and electric motors prior to being re-wound. They also get into a variety of other applications that involve the need to clean coatings or other foreign matter from delicate surfaces such as jewelry, watches and similar items. They use walnut shell material as it works well without etching or otherwise damaging these surfaces.

The customer contacted EXAIR as they were looking for a reasonable way to clean up this very dusty material after they have used it. In fact, they re-use the material multiple times and needed a good way to collect it back into a central tank without creating huge dust clouds that would present a breathing hazard to their operators.

Our customer contacted us after they saw we had the new Heavy Duty HEPA Vac as part of our Industrial Housekeeping Products offering now. They had a few initial questions regarding how well it actually traps the very fine materials that it vacuums. I had explained to them that we had conducted several tests on a variety of materials including everything from metal chips down to powder the consistency of baking flour. When tested with the very fine materials, we found there were no visible emissions through the filtering system and back into the atmosphere above the drum lid where the exhaust flow is located. That discussion was enough to convince this customer that the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac was the right product for them. Previously, they had been trying to use the typical electric shop vacuums that you get from the local hardware stores. While these work OK for a while, they get clogged up with the fine dust very quickly. Also, the fine dust makes its way into the electric motor causing over heating conditions and eventually failure. The Heavy Duty HEPA Vac has no moving parts to wear out. That was another advantage the customer saw as positive for their purposes.

Since buying model 6199 Heavy Duty HEPA Vac a month ago, our customer has reported back to me their success at using the unit for cleanup and recycling. Having the capability of a large, 55 gallon drum reservoir was another feature that made their job a lot easier.
