Application Database : Success Stories in Foundries

Today I wanted to cover a few application successes from within Foundries.

The first example is from a company who manufactures flux for aluminum processing. They were experiencing conveyor belt jam ups because not all the material would fall off at the tail end of the belt. What adhered to the belt would be carried over on the return, fell off due to gravity and vibration, and was causing build up underneath and jamming the belt. The Model 110036 36″ (914mm) Super Air Knife was installed on the end of the conveyor blowing off any tramp material as the belt came around the head pulley. This consolidated the debris to one area where they could easily reach it for removal. This all but eliminated maintenance and downtime.

A manufacturer of aluminum rods was having problems with removing drawing die lubricant from aluminum bar being cut to length. The lubricant was causing the bar to slip in the grippers, causing the bars to be cut short. Passing the bar through a Model 2402 2″ (51mm) Super Air Wipe effectively removed the lubricant, and eliminated grip slippage.

The last customer operates an aluminum foundry. A small actuating cylinder’s seals were failing frequently, due to the heat from a nearby furnace. Using a Model 3230 Medium Vortex Tube, they are able to direct a flow of cold air onto the cylinder, keeping the elastomer seals cool, which greatly extends their life.

EXAIR’s Application Database: Static Elimination 

EXAIR uses many different methods to connect with our customers.  We have our website, social media, blogs, publications etc. We like to share solutions for some of the most common pneumatic problems in the industry.  EXAIR generated a large collection of application information where EXAIR products have already solved problems and improved processes.  We organized them by Application and by Industry.  In this blog, I will show you how to use the Application database; specifically, for Static Elimination.

As the weather gets colder and the air gets dryer, static electricity can become a real nuisance in a production plant.  Machines will start jamming, alignments will be difficult, debris will collect on surfaces, and hazardous sparks can shock staff.  EXAIR manufactures a large line of Gen4 Static Eliminators to remove this static nuisance.  We collected these key solutions in an Application Library.   

Here is how you can find this library.  First, you will have to sign into EXAIR.  Click here: Log In.  Once you fill in the proper information, you can then retrieve a great number of resources about EXAIR products that we manufacture.   The Applications are under the Resource tab.  (Reference photo below).

In the Application library, we have over one thousand applications that we reference.  In the left selection pane, we organized them under two categories, Applications and Industry.   (Reference photo below).

Scroll down in the “Application” selection pane until you come to the sub-category: Static Elimination.  (You may have to click on the “Expand” to see more categories).  You will find many applications in which EXAIR has already helped to improve processes by removing static, and it is documented.

Ultraviolet Curing and Vortex Tube Cooling

Recently EXAIR worked on a project to cool down parts that were using Ultraviolet (UV) light to cure a surface coating. Ultraviolet curing is a photochemical process that uses UV light to cure/dry certain inks, coatings, and adhesives. Due to the fact that UV light produces a good amount of heat the product would heat up during the curing process and create issues for them down the line which slowed down production in order let them cool. The simple solution to this was the use of the vortex tube to blow on the product to cool it down during the process. By doing so they were able cool the product down to a suitable temperature for the process to speed up.

EXAIR’s Vortex Tubes are great for cooling down surfaces to temperatures below ambient thanks to the cold air stream that is produced from the vortex tube. Vortex tubes use a source of compressed air to create both a hot and cold stream of air simultaneously which allows the unit to be used for cooling but also heating applications. The amount of air flow coming out of either end of the Vortex Tube can be controlled; by doing so one can adjust the temperature of the air streams coming out.

There are numerous methods to distribute the cold air flow from a lone, or a series of, Vortex Tubes.

Although the main application for the Vortex Tube is to be used for cooling, it is occasionally used to heat as well. Heating applications are uncommon, but they are still possible. Since a vortex tube creates a cold and hot stream of air; by controlling what the fraction of air is flowing out of the cold end you can create a temperature rise (a rise from the starting air temp) of up to 195F! Now that is hot.
