In certain applications such as blowing chips or debris out of a pipe or blind hole, it may not be possible to blow forward. The pipe may be too long, making it impossible to push the debris all the way down the pipe or the other end of the pipe may not be open. In either of these scenarios, the Back Blow Nozzle is the right tool for the job. An array of holes around the diameter of the Back Blow Nozzles provides a powerful 360° airflow pattern that will clear out any leftover coolant or chips from the machining process.
EXAIR has three different size Back Blow Nozzles; the 1004SS (M4 x .5), the 1006SS (1/4 NPT), and the 1008SS (1” NPT). The 1004SS is recommended for use on pipes as small as ¼” and up to 1”. The 1006SS can be used for a wide range of pipe sizes, from 7/8” up to 4”. The 1008SS nozzle offers the greatest overall force for stubborn or sticky materials stuck to the inside diameter of the pipe. This nozzle is suitable for use in pipes ranging from 2”-16”. As the Back Blow Nozzle will be blowing chips and debris back out of the pipe towards the operator, it is always recommended that a Chip Shield is used. The strong polycarbonate Chip Shield will keep them safe from flying debris and keep you in compliance with OSHA directive 1910.242(b). All of EXAIR’s Back Blow Nozzles are available with extensions. For the 1004SS we have extensions from 6”-36”, and from 12”-72” for the 1006SS and 1008SS. In the last year EXAIR has released two products that aid in cleaning and cooling cylindrical shapes. The liquid sprayed from our AT1010SS Internal Mix Spray Nozzle creates a 360° Hollow Circular Pattern that is excellent for cleaning the inner diameter of a pipe, a casting, or a bore. The 1006SS Back Blow Nozzle is an air only nozzle that is designed to clean, dry or cool the inside diameter of a hose or tube and also effective cleaning out channel. These products can be used in conjunction to create a more powerful system than either component by itself.
The AT1010SS spray nozzle can be used in a variety of applications. As I mentioned above the 360° spray pattern is great for spraying out the inside of a pipe or duct-work. In addition to these applications, the nozzle can be used to cover a wide area with spray patterns up to 53 inches in diameter. This wide spray area can be used for humidification, dust suppression, cooling or sanitizing. The 303 stainless steel construction of the nozzle will hold up to a variety of chemicals and environments. These nozzles can cover a significant area while using a relatively small amount of air and liquid. The AT2010SS is also available which features EXAIR’s No Drip design (patent pending), which will positively shut off the liquid flow when air pressure is removed. This eliminates unwanted drips which can ruin surfaces and waste expensive liquids. The 360° Circular Hollow spray pattern is a versatile nozzle that covers a variety of applications.
The 1006SS back blow nozzle features a number of orifices around the outside of the nozzle which force air back toward the operator and away from the air inlet. In most applications this will be used to pull water, chips, coolant, or debris out of the end of a pipe, channel, or tubing to clean the inner diameter. The Back Nozzles will typically be offered with a chip shield to contain any chips or debris from blowing towards the operator.
These two nozzles used in conjunction would work great to cool, clean, and dry the inside of, say, a welded pipe. The AT1010SS could be used to flush the inside of the pipe with water to cool the weld and blow out and weld slag or grinding dust from preparing the area. The 1006SS could pull out the water or debris from the inside of the pipe. The AT1010SS can be reinserted to spray the inside of the pipe with a rust inhibitor to maintain the quality of the weld until installation. These nozzles work well together to clean the ID of the channel, tube or hose in your application.
Recently, I had the pleasure of solving an application for a steel pipe manufacturer. To clean the inside diameters of their freshly-washed pipes, they were using open end blow offs: the ever-popular and easy-to-make, but loud and inefficient crushed-end tubing. I got excited, because this was my first chance to discuss our brand-new Back Blow Nozzle, which is aimed (pun intended) at cleaning inside diameter surfaces. That’s where my story develops a “bad news/good news/better news” pattern…
The good news: The user already had a system set up, using the aforementioned “homemade” blow offs, which looked something like this:
The better news: They were able to easily adapt their system to install our Model 1120 High Force Super Air Nozzles, which lowered their compressed air consumption as well as the noise level of the operation.
