Care and Feeding Of Your Reversible Drum Vac

EXAIR’s Reversible Drum Vac couldn’t be easier to operate. Thread it in to the 3/4 NPT vent connection on your drum lid, install the Standpipe & Hose on the 2 NPT bung, hook up a compressed air line to it, and you’re in business. As long as your compressed air is clean & moisture free, your Reversible Drum Vac will run like new for a long, long time.

Should you start to see a decrease in performance, though, the first thing you’ll want to do is verify the compressed air supply, especially if something’s changed:

  • Did you get a new hose? The Reversible Drum Vac uses 19 SCFM @80psig for rated performance. That’ll require a 3/8″ ID hose, assuming a length of no more than about 20ft.
  • Are there any restrictions in the line? The usual suspects are clogged filters, partially closed valves, or push-to-connect quick-connect fittings.
  • Are there any vacuum leaks in the hose, its cuffs, the drum, or either threaded connection? If the lid’s removable, is that gasket intact?
Pro tip: a pressure gauge, right at the inlet, will give you instant indication of an air supply issue with your RDV (or any compressed air-operated product.)

If you’ve eliminated all of those potential problems, it’s time to take a look at the Reversible Drum Vac itself. The Reversible Drum Vac has tight internal passages that contamination from even the cleanest compressed air systems can build up in, over time. Good news is, we made it super easy to disassemble & clean, and better news: this almost always restores it to as-new performance. We even have a video that walks you through it:

You may be surprised not at how much, but how little contamination you find inside the Reversible Drum Vac. We offer factory refurbishment service for them as well…the procedure in the video is step-by-step what that service consists of, except we also replace the Shim, O-Rings, & Float, and when we reassemble it, we verify performance on the same fixture that every single new Reversible Drum Vac that we build gets tested on. Recently, a customer sent a Reversible Drum Vac in for refurbishment services after we’d spent some time talking on the phone, exchanging emails, and even a brief Engineering Consultation web meeting, troubleshooting their loss of vacuum. I was particularly curious about this one, so when it came in, I tested it (on our calibrated test fixture) for performance, and found it was only generating about 22% of rated vacuum, and only 17% of rated flow. I figured it was clogged (with a capital CLOGGED) so I match marked the body & plug (just like we show in the video) and took it apart:

I was frankly surprised at how little contamination (which appeared to be rust from the customer’s compressed air piping system) caused such a dramatic loss of vacuum.

We then completed the Refurbishment Service and tested it again. Performance was verified to be within specification for a new High Lift Reversible Drum Vac.

I offer to share the Cleaning & Refurbishing video with just about anyone who calls to discuss performance (or lack thereof) of their Reversible Drum Vac. Some still want to send theirs in for Refurbishment Service, and that’s fine. If you have a Reversible Drum Vac that’s not working properly, I’m here to help you get the most out of our products — any of them — give me a call.

Industrial Housekeeping Promo: Free Vac-U-Gun

Are you in need of a new vacuum system or upgrade your new old system? Well now’s the time to do it! Starting March 1st, 2021 and running through May 31st, 2021, we are offering a free Vac-U-Gun system with any order of one of our Industrial Housekeeping Vacuum Systems. Our Vac-U-Gun system is a versatile tool that can help you clean up surfaces and transfer the material from point A to point B. The Vac-U-Gun can also be used as a powerful blow gun simply by unscrewing the generator and flipping it around. Best of all these units have no moving parts meaning they will run almost indefinitely and are maintenance free.

Vac-U-Gun System

Our industrial housekeeping products are designed to either handle dry solids or liquid.

If you need to handle solid material our Chip Vac system is the perfect choice. The system can handle both dry and damp material and transfer it into one of our standard open top steel drum (or use one of your own drums). If you are working with a heavier or abrasive material then look no further then the Heavy Duty Dry Vac which provides superior performance and abrasion resistance for use with materials as garnet, ground glass, blasting and tumbling media.

For your dustier applications we offer the Heavy Duty HEPA Vac system, which uses the same vacuum generator as the Heavy Duty Dry Vac but provides a higher level of filtration. The HEPA rated filter meets the requirements of 99.97% filtration at the 0.3 micron level.

If liquids are what you need the Reversible Drum Vac system which can pump 55 gals in 90 secs is an good choice. The Reversible Drum Vac also comes in a High Lift version which can be used to pump liquids that have a much thicker viscosity and move liquids up to 15’ deep. When it comes filtering out solids from your liquid we also have the High Lift Chip Trapper and the Chip Trapper system. The Chip Trapper systems allow you to filter out solids suspended in the liquid; this is perfect for filtering out chips from your coolant tanks for machining.

If you need to clean up both liquids and solids, choose our new EasySwitch Wet-Dry Vac system. The EasySwitch allows you to easily switch the unit from being able to vacuum up solids to being able to suck up liquids (hence the name). All you have to do is remove the HEPA filter from the latch on the lid. There are no tools involved, no springs or cumbersome closures. Switch from liquids to dry materials in less than 15 seconds.

EXAIR Pneumatic Liquid Vacuums

EXAIR‘s line of Industrial Housekeeping Products consist of liquid and dry vacuums that utilize compressed air to operate. They do not have electric motors which most ‘all purpose’ vacuums rely on.  In industrial settings with harsh conditions and rugged use, EXAIR’s Industrial Housekeeping Products are ideally suited for the everyday wear and tear.

Reversible Drum Vac with spill recovery kit!
EXAIR liquid type vacuums, like the Reversible Drum Vac, the High Lift Reversible Drum Vac, and the Chip Trappers are reliable, versatile and easy to use. Installing onto an any closed head, 30, 55, or 110 gallon drum creates a high powered vacuum.  It can fill a 55 gallon drum in less than 2 minutes.  Then, with the turn of a knob, the the same pump quickly empties the drum. Useful for refilling coolant sumps, vacuuming floor spills, or transferring contaminated liquids to filtration tanks in minutes.  Flow rate can be controlled with the knob.
EXAIR Reversible Drum Vacs
The Chip Trapper has an internal filtration system to separate the chips from the coolant, allowing for disposal of the solids, and for pumping of the clean coolant back into the sump.
EXAIR Chip Trapper
When you look at the vacuums, you’ll notice there is not an electrical cord.  Because the EXAIR Industrial Housekeeping Products utilize compressed air for operation, they do not have the same issues with wear, breakdown and failures as electrical type vacuums. There are no moving parts in the vacuum units to wear out or break.  They are maintenance free, just supply clean, dry air, and they will operate for a long time. For the the liquid type systems, there is a built in pressure/vacuum relief device and auto safety shut-off to prevent overfilling.

There are no motors and bearings to wear out and no impellers to clog.  The Chip Vac is 50% quieter than a comparable electric vacuum.  Safety is a top priority, and the use of the unit on wet floors and spills is not an issue when electricity is not involved.

Product Overview – High Lift Reversible Drum Vac

Are you needing to move a thick fluid, move liquid farther or higher? Do you have a below grade sump or pit you’re looking  to empty? Then EXAIR has the solution for you, enter the High Lift Reversible Drum Vac. Like the standard Reversible Drum Vac, the High Lift RDV is a compressed air operated, liquid only vacuum with no moving parts or motors that can fail,  like those in traditional electrically powered vacuums. What separates the High Lift RDV from the traditional version is the higher vacuum it achieves which allows you to lift liquids up to 15′, move liquids up to 20′ and handle fluids with viscosity as high as 1400 centipoise.

The High Lift Reversible Drum Vac is a high powered vacuum able to lift liquids up to 15′ and fill a 55 gallon drum in less than 85 seconds!

The High Lift Reversible Drum Vac features a two-way pump constructed of stainless steel and a built-in safety relieve valve to avoid over pressurizing or over-filling the drum. Air consumption is minimal, at 43 SCFM @ 80 PSIG, while maintaining a low noise level of only 83 dBA. In “empty” mode, the HLRDV achieves a flow rate of 30 gallons per minute (water) to quickly empty the drum.
