Industrial Safety: Compressed Air

At EXAIR, we have a statement that says, “Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”  EXAIR builds its name around manufacturing safe and protective compressed air products.  In the United States, we have an organization called the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that enforces governmental directives for safe and healthy working environments.  They do training, outreach programs, and educational assistance for manufacturing plants to reduce injuries and fatalities.  They can also enforce these directives with heavy fines for violations.  With compressed air systems, the two most common violations are 29CFR 1910.242(b) for dead-end pressure/chip shielding and 29CFR 1910.95(a) for maximum allowable noise exposure.

Unsafe Nozzle

Here is an example of a nozzle that is dangerous.  As you can see, there is only one path where the air can pass through.  Other similar types of blow-off devices that would fall into this same group would include copper tubes, flexible lines, and open pipes.  They are dangerous as compressed air cannot escape if it is blocked by your body or skin.  If operated above 30 PSIG (2 bar), these nozzles could penetrate the skin and create an air embolism within the body, which can cause bodily harm or death.  This is a hazard that can be avoided by using EXAIR Super Air Nozzles and Safety Air Guns.  The nozzles are designed with fins, which allow the air to escape and cannot be blocked by your skin.  So, you can use the EXAIR Super Air Nozzles safely above 30 PSIG (2 bar) and remain OSHA compliant.

Unsafe Air Gun

To counteract the dead-end pressure violation, some nozzle manufacturers create a hole through the side of the nozzle (reference photo above).  This will allow the compressed air to escape, but now the issue is noise levels.  With an “open” hole in the nozzle, the compressed air is very turbulent and very loud.  The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) states that 70% to 80% of all hearing loss within a manufacturing plant is caused by compressed air.  OSHA created a chart to show the maximum allowable noise exposure.  This chart shows the exposure time and noise limits before hearing protection is required.  The EXAIR Super Air Nozzles, Super Air Knives, and Super Air Amplifiers are designed to have laminar flow, which makes them very quiet.  As an example, the model 1210 Soft Grip Safety Air Gun has a sound level of only 74 dBA, well under the noise exposure limit for 8 hours.

One of the last things that companies think about when purchasing compressed air products is safety.  Loud noises and dead-end pressure can be missed or forgotten.  To avoid any future fines or having to purchase additional personal protective equipment (PPE), it will be much safer to purchase EXAIR products.  If you would like to improve the safety of your facility and reduce energy costs, an Application Engineer at EXAIR can review your current blow-off devices.  Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: EXAIR’s New Catalog 34 In-House!

At EXAIR, continuous improvement is a way of life. We pride ourselves in consistently offering a wide variety of solutions and continuously looking at ways to improve on existing product lines and expand new ones. It’s something that sets us apart from other manufacturers.

This year, EXAIR released the 34th edition of the catalog (click here to request one!). As is always the case, it’s filled with detailed information on each of our product lines. Technical specifications, product dimensions, application examples, just about everything you’ll need to determine which solution is best for you.

For this year we’ve added (3) new products that you’ll find in this edition. First is an expansion of EXAIR’s Liquid Atomizing Spray Nozzles: The 3/8 NPT HollowStream Cone Nozzle. With a single 3/8 NPT liquid connection, this nozzle offers a liquid flow rate of up to 7.28 GPM at 60 PSI liquid pressure in a hollow shaped cone pattern.

We also added to our Intellistat® Static Eliminators Product Line with the new Intellistat® Ion Air Nozzle. Similar to our Intellistat® Ion Air Gun, the Model 8505 offers the same +/- 30V offset without the need to operate the manual trigger. This new nozzle is ideal for applications that require a solution that can be benchtop mounted, providing hands-free operation and static neutralization. It’s designed with the same convenient features in the Intellistat® Ion Air Gun with the simple 6mm push-in air connection and LED lights to indicate functionality. Each comes with a compact stainless steel mounting bracket pre-mounted for quick and easy installation right out of the box.

Finally, we introduced an entirely new line of Safety Air Guns: The TurboBlast Safety Air Gun. Using EXAIR’s largest Super Air Nozzles, the TurboBlast Safety Air Gun delivers the most powerful force of any gun with a comfortable easy-to-use handle. Models are available with an adjustable gate valve that allows for easy adjustments to the air consumption and force with a simple turn of the adjustment valve. All models are available with or without the gate valve and with 1′ (included on base models), 3′, or 6′ extensions. They also come with an installed nozzle guard to protect the nozzle fins from damage should the gun ever be dropped by operators.

Look no further than EXAIR when it comes to innovative compressed air solutions. Give us a call to discuss any of our new (and existing!) product lines and learn how we can help improve your processes.

Accessorize Your Safety Air Gun – More Choices from EXAIR

Over the years you may have read blog posts regarding the EXAIR Safety Air Guns.  You can find the blogs herehere and here. Today, I want to review a few available options for the Safety Air Guns.

Protect Workers From Flying Debris! – Chip Shields are durable polycarbonate shields that protect the operator from flying debris often seen when blowing off chips from machined parts. They are also useful to prevent coolant from splashing back, creating a mess during drying processes.

Chip Shields
Chip Shields

The Chip Shields are available for EXAIR’s VariBlastSoft Grip, and Heavy Duty Safety Air Guns. The Chip Shield can be used on Safety Air Guns with or without an aluminum extension. They may be purchased as part of a new air gun system, or retrofitted as a Chip Shield Kit.  Consult an Application Engineer for selection assistance.

If you have a blow-off process where the air is to be directed at a distance away from the operator, or into a hard to reach location an extension is the solution. Available in lengths from 6″ (152mm) to 72″ (1829mm), with sizes as shown below, a length to meet most any requirement can be found. To add an extension to an air gun, simply add -xx to the current part number.

And, if you need a 12′ coiled air hose, to use with your Safety Air Gun, we have them available and in stock. Available with 1/8 NPT, 1/4 NPT or 3/8 NPT male end swivel connections. Avoid tangled and messy air lines and keep things neat!
