Safety Air Guns – Using Engineered Air Nozzles For High Performance

Inexpensive air guns can be picked up just about anywhere, and you generally get what you pay for. Most will be very noisy and waste lots of compressed air.  And many will be unsafe, violating two of OSHA’s standards put in place to protect worker safety. The first is Standard 29 CFR 1910.95(a) which sets limits to the maximum noise exposure, and the second is Standard 29 CFR 1910.242(b) which says that the nozzle cannot be dead-ended, or exceed a 30 PSIG pressure limit.

These guns may seem like a perfect fit for a handheld blowoff application. The truth is, the cost saved up front will easily be paid throughout the cost of ownership.  This is due to the lack of an engineered nozzle which meets and exceeds the OSHA standards mentioned above.   The “cheap” guns often have a cross drilled hole to meet or exceed the OSHA standard for dead-end pressure. While this may be true, it causes a large wind sheer which escalates noise levels to well over the allowable noise level exposure set by OSHA.  These tips sometimes offer large force outputs because they are equivalent to an open pipe.  We have publicized numerous times about how an open pipe blow off does not permit pressure to be utilized all the way to the point of blowoff, and is also a waste of energy.

Safety Air Guns – True Cost of Ownership

There are many inexpensive, cheaply made air guns out on the market.  If evaluated solely on purchase price, the decision of what air gun to buy seems obvious.  Only when you consider all the cost of ownership and operation, does the best direction become apparent.

A popular thumb lever operated air gun, readily available online has a base purchase price of $6.11.  The List price of the EXAIR model 1210 Soft Grip Safety Air Gun is $81.00. Wow- big difference you think, I am surely not going to spend that kind of money on a simple air gun.  Let’s take a look of the true cost of ownership for each of the guns.

We tested both the model 1210 and the other gun utilizing our Efficiency Lab service. We tested at 80 PSIG of supply pressure and measured and recorded air consumption, force and sound levels. Results of this testing is shown below.

From the test data, the other gun is able to provide 9% more force, but at a cost of 35% greater compressed air consumption, 5.64 SCFM more, along with an 18 dBA sound level increase (a sound level where hearing protection is needed, an additional cost to be incurred.)

If we examine the compressed air consumption, we can calculate the yearly compressed air usage, considering 4 hour per day of operation, 5 days per week, for 50 weeks out of the year.

Free Safety Air Guns and Beards

Last week, Brian introduced Movember to the EXAIR blog this year.  I’m pretty sure Movember was started as a flimsy excuse for some Aussies to grow their facial hair and not have their bosses and wives give them a hard time.  I fully support this plan.  Having said that, it is very difficult to talk about men’s health with other men.  One of the difficulties is it is impossible to feel manly, while mentioning a prostate exam, but if women can go through breast examinations and child birth, we can deal with going to the doctor every year.  Do you know the one thing that makes you feel manly? Outrageous facial hair.  So I’m hoping by the end of the month, I will be able to pull off talking about testicular cancer, prostate exams, and mental health without making awful of jokes about the subject matter.  I wouldn’t bet on my growing up that much by growing a beard, but it is worth a shot.  *Note: I had a very funny joke here that made my editor spit his coffee from laughter, unfortunately, this a family friendly blog, so we had to cut it.*

On Halloween, I had my last full face shave until December 1st, but I have been trimming my neck.  Here are the results so far.

I have reached the stage in beard growing, where I now need to do some trimming to keep it neat, and it itches like crazy.

(Alas, complaining about facial hair being itchy is distinctly unmanly, so I will stop that.  Joe is photobombing me in this picture to keep me from posting a selfie, which is also distinctly unmanly.)

Speaking of health issues.  According to Michigan’s OSHA Five Minute Safety Talk No. 13, “Air pressure in excess of 30 lbs. can drive chips, as well as scale from inside the piping, into your face and eyes with the force of shrapnel. Such air driven missiles still do damage when they bounce off a surface, spinning much like a high speed cutting head. Air pressure against the skin may penetrate deeply to cause internal hemorrhage and intense pain.”

When using compressed air, please ensure that you use an engineered solution to prevent accidentally dead ending over 30 PSIG against human skin and be sure to wear all PPE and ensure that proper shielding is in place to prevent flying chips from creating and unsafe situation.

Chip Shields Improve Safety

I have been around long enough to have been in the role of supervision when mandatory eye protection was instituted.  The first couple of years were particularly challenging getting employees to  wear their safety glasses. I was given every excuse imaginable as a reason to NOT wear the safety glasses. It wasn’t until we made them view a safety video that they became converts.

The video was a typical 1940’s style government production featuring a 1948 Chevy ambulance with a siren mounted on the front fender blaring away. Laughter filled the room until the scene in the operating room. The victim had a piece of aluminum shaving impaled in his eye. A magnet could not be used to extract the projectile so they had to slit the eyeball with a scalpel.  The room got absolutely dead silent and a couple of people fainted. Which proves a picture is worth a thousand words and any disciplinary action.

Compressed air is commonly used to clean off parts and/or clear an area. The potential of a projectile  to ricochet back towards the operator is real. To provide added safety along with proper personal protection, EXAIR offers a chip shield option to our blow off guns. Chip Shields are made of a durable polycarbonate shield that protects operators from flying debris often associated with blowing chips off machined parts. Chip Shields are also great for keeping coolant from spreading everywhere during drying operations.

An EXAIR safety air gun can be ordered with a chip shield installed by simply adding a “-CS” to its part number.  Or, If you have a gun without a shield, they can be retrofitted. A rubber grommet is supplied to fit over your existing extension wand. For models that do not already have and aluminum extension in place, a short extension nipple and necessary adapter is provided.
