Social Media Finds Lost Dogs, Helps Save Compressed Air

The versatility of  social media is one of its greatest assets. If you have an interest in something you can most likely discover others with the same interests on one of the social media platforms. From Facebook, Twitter, blog posts, LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube to Pinterest, Flickr, Instagram and Reddit – you will be hard pressed to NOT find something you are looking for.

The other day, we lost our dog, and it was a traumatic experience for us.  She saw some deer in the backyard; and in her crazed state, she knocked down the pet gate.  Molly went after the deer into the woods behind our place.  Being that it was raining and approaching the evening hour, I mentioned that when she gets done hunting, she will come back home.  We placed her bed and food onto the porch for when she returned.

The next day, Molly was not on the porch.  We were disheartened.  Being that I am a bit “old” school, we decided to print some flyers with Molly’s picture.  After I returned from work, we started in my neighborhood and worked our way out.  We drove to all the neighbors to see if they had seen her, and we stapled the flyers to telephone poles and community boards.  We were going at it for hours, and it seemed to be getting hopeless.  (Now, I would not have written this blog if it had a sad ending.)

As we continued to make our journey, I went up to a house and knocked on their door.  A gentleman answered, and I gave him the story of how our dog got out of her pen.  As I was still speaking, my significant other rolled down her window and shouted to me that she found Molly.  I was a little confused as I headed back to the vehicle.  She told me that a picture of Molly was on her Facebook.  (Of course Molly was making herself right at home as the picture showed her laying on a couch).  We were extremely happy that we had finally found her.  Apparently, a lady that found Molly posted her picture, and tagged her friends.  Her friends then sent it out to their friends, and before you knew it, we had her picture on Facebook.  With a friend request, we were able to receive her location and start our way to pick her up.  Believe it or not, Molly was over 2 miles away from our house.

Being curious, I looked at the timeline of the post.  I noticed that she posted the picture at 6:44 p.m., and we were looking at Molly at 7:28 p.m. that same day.  This was definitely much quicker and easier than hanging flyers and knocking on doors.  I was amazed at how fast and simple that this social networking reunited us with Molly.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

I’ve always been a little hesitant to post certain personal things like “checking in” at a restaurant or letting the world know that I will be on vacation for the next 7 days, but sometimes it’s difficult to hold back when you have great news.

My wife and I are expecting our 2nd son in the beginning of April and couldn’t be happier!!! We originally decided to only tell our families, close friends and co-workers because we wanted to make sure there were no complications. While it was difficult to hold back our excitement (convince my wife to restrain herself – some people have coffee first thing in the morning, she has her news feed), over the weekend my wife made the announcement on her FB page. The amount of positive feedback was amazing. We heard from extended family, friends, former classmates and co-workers all congratulating us. We even had people offering some of their gently used baby gear, which will come in handy since we just donated most of our gear last spring.

30 Years and Going Strong

I’ve been derelict in getting my hair cut and one of my co-workers made comment that I needed to use some Brylcreem. I chimed in with the  Brylcreem jingle from back in the 50’s. Two of the younger co-workers had no idea of what we were talking about since this product was popular 30 years before being born (watch video). Yes those were simpler times and the graphics were not as elaborate as they are today. Never the less, if they are remembered 30 years later, their message had to have been effective.

While some commercials stick in our minds, others rise to the pinnacle of fame such as the sound track for the famous Alka-Seltzer” No Matter What Shape  your stomach is in” commercial. It actually made the top ten music list.

EXAIR is completing its 30th year anniversary and I am coming up on my 20th year anniversary.We have our own print ads which stuck in people’s minds and one or two that may be famous, perhaps infamous (and never made the cut). That is part of the beauty of EXAIR, a company that allows us to let loose now and then so we can produce a spoof ad or two which may include a boss speed skating against Apolo Ohno or a good-humored co-worker playing Jack Black’s role in Nacho Libre (internal office consumption only – sorry). Looking back over my tenure with EXAIR, I’ve experienced the growth of the company into the premier supplier of Intelligent Compressed Air Products®. Seeing is Believing

My wife and I are searching for our first home this week, which has been an eye-opening experience in many ways.  There are so many things that you have to learn about financing, home inspection, layouts, locations and insurance.  There is insurance or warranties for the home, title, and asbestos, but that is for another day.

The thing that my wife and I both noticed is that we wouldn’t look at any houses that didn’t have pictures available.  We just assumed that if they didn’t have pictures available the place wasn’t worth our time.  The one house without pictures that we did visit was disaster.  The one photo of the outside of the house was very old, but there were no pictures of the inside of the house. When we got a closer look at the outside of the house, the paint was peeling, the yard was a mess, and the screen door was locked.  We couldn’t get inside to see the rest of the house.  This leads me to be very hesitant to consider any purchase without seeing at least a photo of the unit.  If you are trying to sell a product and you don’t have photos readily available it seems safe to assume that since it wasn’t important enough to the sellers to put the photos online, it wasn’t worth my time looking at the place or product to find out what they were trying to hide.  I’m very weary of any sale of product were I can’t see what I’m buying.
