E-Vac for Epoxy Recycling

Recently, a manufacturer of custom magnetics called in about a special application. In the manufacturing of certain electronic systems, a very expensive, thick epoxy glue is used. They were exploring ways to be able to collect the excess after application.  They had used a system in the past and were looking to replicate it.  The previous system had an old boxy vacuum generator, and they asked us if we could provide a vacuum source that matched the performance specifications but in a more compact design.  After researching the specifications and a comprehensive comparison, we could offer the EXAIR model 810013 Inline E-Vac, generating up to 27 ” Hg of vacuum.  A basic sketch of the design concept is shown below-

By using the model 810013 to create a vacuum within the chamber, a strong suction can be generated at the tube inlet, strong enough to draw in the excess epoxy. The glue can be collected in the chamber for recycling and reuse, and because of the design, the glue does not pass through the E-Vac and cause any issues with build up or blockage that would hinder the performance, leading to the need to clean the unit.

The Many Sizes of E-Vac Models Available

EXAIR manufactures E-Vac’s for both porous and non-porous applications, as well as a line of Adjustable E-Vac Generators.  Smallest units use only 1.5 SCFM of 80 PSIG compressed air and the largest Adjustable E-Vac unit can pull 81 SCFM of air at open draw and 15″ Hg vacuum level setting.  With a wide range of sizes and types, there is a model available to meet your vacuum generation needs.

As a side note – the EXAIR Reversible Drum Vac, High Lift Reversible Drum Vac, Chip Trapper, and High Lift Chip Trapper all use this same basic principle of applying a vacuum to a chamber, but on a much larger scale, to turn a 5, 30, 55 or 110 gallon drum into an industrial liquid vacuum system.  The vacuum generating unit is of a different design, made specifically for the Industrial Housekeeping Products.

E-Vac For Lubricant Recovery

Over the last 3 months, I have been in contact with a customer, keeping track of an application that involved the EXAIR E-Vac.  The customer had reached out to us looking for some advice on how to solve a process problem. The operation is a drawing/stamping process, and the when the part exits the machine there is coolant that resides in a deep draw section, approx 0.4″ in diameter by 3.5″deep.  About 1 oz of coolant per part is retained, and over many 1000’s of parts, would add up to lost dollars and messy clean up.

The customer was looking for an automated process that would be able to draw out the coolant and direct the liquid back to the coolant reservoir, all while maintaining the current machine run rate. We settled in on the model 840015 Adjustable E-Vac Generator. The Adjustable E-Vac has a straight through pathway from suction through to discharge, allowing for fast evacuation times.  A simple turn of the unit changes the vacuum and flow levels to best match the needs of the application.  The Adjustable E-Vac coupled to a solenoid valve controlled by the stamping machine resulted in the automatic system the customer was looking for.

The customer ordered a unit, and based on the preliminary bench testing, it was approved for a production run trial. After some tweaking in the production environment, the unit was performing to spec, and was then subjected to a 100,000+ part run.  The results were a success!  Instead of the parts exiting onto an inclined conveyor, relying on gravity to drain and causing coolant to collect under the conveyor, the coolant could be removed in a controlled manner and sent back to the reservoir.  Less mess and no coolant loss.

EXAIR manufactures (3) types of E-Vacs – Low vacuum generators for porous materials, high vacuum generators for non-porous materials, and the adjustable type for flexible vacuum performance.  They are available in multiple sizes, to best match the vacuum requirements, while using the least amount of compressed air.

EXAIR Knowledge Base Makes Problem Solving Easy

EXAIR makes every effort to solve your manufacturing problems, increase your efficiency and raise the bar on your safety practices. We try to do that immediately, today, right now and we’d like you to be on your way to an improved facility by tomorrow – that is why we stock all of our cataloged products and ship same day on domestic orders received by 3 pm. In order to do that it seems you would prefer to be working with a company that’s easy to do business with, and EXAIR is easy. One way we try and achieve this is by providing as much general information as we can under the Knowledge Base section of our website.  By taking advantage of the free registration, you gain access to a variety of helpful information that can help simplify your selection process and provide the final details to complete a particular project.

Knowledge Base
The Knowledge Base can be found in the black menu bar at the top of our webpage.

Take, for example, our full CAD Library providing 3D models and 2D dimensional drawings in several different formats which can be used by MANY different programs. Whether you are looking for a .stp file for a 72″ Super Air Knife or the .dwg file for a medium sized Vortex Tube, the information is readily available for download without needing to place a call to our office.

Another useful tool is our Case Study library which features a database showcasing the  benefits of using an EXAIR product in place of existing inefficient or unsafe blowoffs. Just a few benefits to list would be compressed air savings, safety improvements, achieving OSHA compliance, an increase in production, lowering the decibel level in a work area or overall money savings. We are continually looking to add useful information to the library and can offer some EXAIR swag or an incentive in exchange for quantifiable data. (give me a call for details!)

Maybe your looking for a specific EXAIR solution to a common industrial process? I invite you to take a look at our Application Database. From conveying plastic pellets to a hopper or needing to remove noxious fumes from a coating application, the desired information might just be a simple click away.

These are just a small sample of the useful tools available for easy use. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for or have a specific application you would like to discuss, give us a call so we can help.

Spring Cleaning All Around

Now that Spring is officially here, my “honey-do” list has grown quite substantially as of late. Besides all the work we’ve done inside the house, moving our first son to his new room and putting the nursery back together for our second’s arrival, we now need to focus on the outside of the house (of course this is what my wife thinks is the #1 priority and hey, she is 9 months pregnant so I am going to agree!).

Spring Cleaning
They way I felt over the weekend!

First on the list is pressure washing the siding and since we were expecting temperatures near 65° this past Saturday, I wasn’t going to mind being outside. One problem though, the pressure washer was buried in the garage behind plastic tubs of old baby clothes (thank goodness we held on to these), bicycles, bags of old toys/clothes for donation and every other thing we’ve “needed to hang on to”, which meant that I was going to need to clean the garage before I could clean the house. Adding another item to the already lengthy, spring-cleaning list.

Are you looking to do some clean up around your facility? If so, EXAIR has you covered with our Industrial Housekeeping Products. ALL of these units are compressed air operated and require no electricity to operate so there are no motors to wear out or moving parts, making them virtually maintenance free!

For liquid only clean up, we offer 3 different products:

Reversible Drum Vac – attaches to any standard 30, 55 or 110 gallon closed head drum. Capable of empty or filling a 55 gallon drum in less than 2 minutes.

High Lift Reversible Drum Vac – Up to 15’ of vacuum lift and able to empty or fill the same 55 gallon drum in 85 seconds

Chip Trapper – incorporates the Reversible Drum Vac to filter solids from liquid and traps them in a reusable filter bag. The unit can they be turned into a pump to empty the filtered, clean liquid back to a tank or reservoir.

For dry materials, we offer 3 different products as well:

Chip Vac – Used for vacuuming wet or dry chips and deposits them into a steel drum.

Heavy Duty Dry Vac – Similar to the Chip Vac but made of hardened alloy construction for abrasion resistance and a higher vacuum rate.

Heavy Duty HEPA Vac – Used in dusty environments to filter contaminants to HEPA standards while providing the same high vacuum rate.

For help selecting the right product for your application, give us a call at 1-800-903-9247.
