Draw Me A Picture

Here at EXAIR it has been said and said again, a picture is worth 1,000 words. This also doubles up on my favorite saying, you can’t teach experience. While I have been with EXAIR for nearly 14 years and in the metal cutting industry for 5 before that, then a student, before that, our other AE’s have diverse backgrounds as well. I grew up around cars and a family that was ingrained in a steel mill and many aspects of it, so seeing a multitude of processes is something I have done since I was little.

When I was a student in Mechanical Engineering Technology I would always try to get into the courses where I would learn more process and critical thinking focus. This led me to many factory visits and case studies where I got to sample many different aspects of many industries. How else am I supposed to know what I want to do when I grow up? Well, working here in the Application Engineer department, I draw on that knowledge and experience nearly every single day. Just this morning, I asked a customer to do a simple sketch of what their system layout would look like, so I could fully understand everything they were going to have in place for a new setup they wanted to try and were concerned with operating pressures/restrictions on their piping.

Now this sketch is quite elaborate from the amount of information it provides. The best part is, all these parts are critical pieces of information. It is also still missing some key parts of information, such as all the distances between system parts. Those items were all discussed and the longest run of the line was going to be the 3 feet of air piping shown.

The customer and I then began to discuss all the size changes in the supply inlet to the system and how not only were the needle valves undersized, which they noted, but the entire piping seemed undersized and going to be an issue to really be able to operate anywhere near line pressure.

At the end of the conversation with the customer, we settled on using a 3/4″ Schedule 40 piping or equivalent, changing out their PRV-1 for a 3/4″ version as well as their filter. Then running that larger line size all the way to the needle valves. I strongly advised them to increase the needle valve sizes as well. We know the valves won’t feed the knives with enough volume as they noted in the sketch and 10 psig is a significant drop. At the same time, the application of keeping some lightweight debris off a surface as a final blowoff isn’t going to demand a full-line pressure blowoff. We also discussed that they could look into reducing the shim in the Super Air Knives like they did in the Air Amplifiers to reduce consumption and to be able to operate at a higher pressure if needed.

Sketches don’t have to be this detailed, it always helps, and the actual pictures are always great too. The point is that we will probably always ask more questions and the result will always be an answer that we feel confident in. We can often back up our selections with scientific data like flow through piping tables and equations for consumption at varying pressures.

If you have a new or existing setup that you would like to discuss with an Application Engineer to determine if it has a high success chance or not, reach out to us!

Super Air Wipe at Sea

I recently worked with a Chief Engineer on a large shipping boat who was having issues with water being brought in by the mooring cables. That salt water was getting into the maintenance room where the mooring cables were wound around a large spool. He wanted to remove the water from the cable before it went below deck so the extra water could just run off the deck back into the ocean.

After talking a bit we decided on a 4″ Super Air Wipe constructed of 303 stainless steel. This way the extra water would be removed and any debris the cable pulled in with it.

Mooring Cable going thru a EXAIR Super AirWipe

The Super Air Wipes provide a full 360° conical airflow that is used to blow-off, cool, clean and dry products. A Coanda profile is designed into the body of the unit to maximize entrainment of ambient air as well as give the precision angle for the air to exit from. This gives the air stream impacting the target zone a 30° angle to the surface in order to provide a substantial shear force for debris removal. This also ensures the large volume of ambient air entrained will all travel the correct direction and not become turbulent before impinging on the surface.

To meet all the tasks at hand, the Super Air Wipes are offered in two main materials of construction. Aluminum body with brass air fittings, connected with stainless steel hardware, shim and connecting hose for up to 4” (102mm). As well as 303 stainless steel body with stainless steel bolts, shim, the connecting hose for up to 4” (102mm) and fittings. The stainless-steel components give the units better corrosion resistance, higher temperature ratings, and more durability in harsh industrial environments.

The aluminum Super Air Wipe is available in 11 sizes; the stainless steel Super Air Wipe comes in 5 sizes…all from stock.

EXAIR stocks the aluminum Super Air Wipes with inner diameters from 3/8” (10 mm) for wire and cables up to 11” (279mm) for large pipes and hoses. The aluminum models have a temperature rating up to 400oF (204oC). We also stock the stainless-steel models from ½” (13mm) to 4” (102mm) inner diameters, and they have a temperature range up to 800oF (427oC). If you require different diameters or materials, we can do that as well easily.

With the creation of the Super Air Wipe, uniform cleaning, cooling, and blowing around the outside of parts is a simple task. You don’t have to worry about a variety of nozzles to target the circumference or a fabricated blow-off device that will waste air and take much time out of your day. A simple purchase of the Super Air Wipe Kit will solve the problem and keep production going. If you need help in selecting the proper size or want to know what material we would recommend for your application, contact us.

Easy clam-shell installation

To provide ease of installation, a unique clam-shell design was engineered to provide clamp over installation rather than traditional threading methods. This also permits quick changes in size when needed in the rapid product change environments.

Super Air Wipe Kit

The Super Air Wipe kits to help get the most out of the air wipes. A kit will include the Super Air Wipe, a filter, regulator and shim set. The filter will remove bulk liquids and debris from the compressed air to keep the performance optimal. The regulator is used to fine-tune the force provided by the Super Air Wipe. This helps to not over-use the amount of compressed air required for the job.

With a regulator, you can make fine adjustments to get the proper amount of air. For coarse adjustments, you can add shims to increase the airflow and force. They are easy to install on the Super Air Wipes to allow for applications to have more cooling, faster drying, and better removal for tough debris. For cleanliness and control, the Super Air Wipe Kits would be recommended for your application.

Air Amplifiers – Vent, Exhaust, Cool, Dry, Clean – With No Moving Parts!

As an Application Engineer, one of the interesting aspects of working with customers on applications is the varied types of solutions an EXAIR product can provide.  The Air Amplifier family – Super Air Amplifier, Adjustable Air Amplifier, and the special High Temperature Air Amplifier can be used in a wide variety of process and applications.  Below highlights several of those from past experiences.

A defense contractor was performing maintenance service on a Navy ship, and the ventilation system had to be shut down.  To keep the personnel cool and safe, an auxiliary ventilation was to be supplied.  Rather than use a cumbersome blower assembly, which has to mounted on the top deck, and ducted down to the lower decks, they chose to utilize (2) 4″ Super Air Amplifiers.  They are very portable and can be set up in minutes.  This solution provided the necessary air flow, providing a safe environment for the maintenance crew.

Super Air Amplifier
EXAIR Air Amplifiers use a small amount of compressed air to create a tremendous amount of air flow.

A light bulb manufacturer needed a better solution for a cooling operation.  During manufacturing of a mercury lamp, the bulb must be cooled from 700°C to 600°C in just 15 seconds.  The current method, an open brass pipe, was working but the noise level was too high (95 dBA.) The goal was to maintain the 15 second cooling time, but reduce sound levels to 85 dBA.  By utilizing (2) of 3/4″ Adjustable Air Amplifiers, the customer was able to maintain the cooling rate, and reduce the noise level down to 80 dBA, a 15 dBA reduction.

A garbage collector presented a problem that needed a solution.  The garbage was incinerated and when the furnaces were first started up, there tended to be issues with getting the flue to draft properly.  Using the High Temperature Air Amplifier, the high velocity air flow and draw provided the needed draft until the stack warmed up and the natural draft would be established.  Since the unit is capable of handling temperatures up to 700°F, it was able to withstand the heat of the process after the compressed air was turned off.

These and other Applications for the Air Amplifiers and all other EXAIR products can be found on the EXAIR website on the Products page, under the Related Info section toward the bottom of each page.
