Plant Engineering’s 2014 Product of the Year Award!

Last week, Plant Engineering presented EXAIR’s Long Super Air Knives the Bronze award for Product of the Year in the compressed air category.  In 2014, EXAIR introduced one piece, seamless Long Super Air Knives up to 108″ in length. No other company in the world can provide a one piece compressed air operated air knife over 54″ long. This one piece design allows for minimal footprint for long units, and an unparalleled uniform sheet of laminar air flow.  These long Super Air Knives conserve compressed air over drilled pipes or a manifold of air nozzles. Their compact design excels at large web drying and cleaning operations i.e. paper, rolled steel, aluminum foils, or plastic sheets. Air knives also excel at cooling extrusions, molds, heated rollers, or components. The air knives entrain ambient air at 40:1 ratio (40 parts ambient to 1 part compressed air) which means it moves a tremendous volume of air and delivers it to your target. The Super Air Knives provide all of these benefits quietly and efficiently. The air knife creates only 69 dBA of noise at 80 PSIG of pressure and it would be a great addition in areas where anyone is trying to limit harmful noise exposure to personnel.

These air knives continue EXAIR’s history of pushing the envelope in air knife technology. In 2010, EXAIR introduced the first polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) air knife to the market. The PVDF Super Air Knives provide resistance to UV light, inorganic chemicals, solvents, ozone, weather, fungi, chlorinated hydrocarbons, highly corrosive acids, weak bases and salts while maintaining a quiet operation (69 dBA).  This material change opened EXAIR to a variety of environments that cannot be served by blowers, aluminum, or stainless steel air knives.

It’s A Major Award!

As many of us celebrated the Holidays we revisited some traditions. Like a lot of families do, my family also has a  number of traditions.  Ours include:

  • A turkey grilled on my trusty Weber kettle.
  • A thorough cleaning of the house, because my wife says if we don’t, my mother-in-law will want to hire us a maid. I’m still trying to understand how that’s a bad thing.
  • A post-dinner family card game. After all, this is the cleanest our dining room table gets all year.
  • Some late-into-the-evening TV. This usually consists of our favorite holiday movie, “A Christmas Story.” If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a cult classic about a boy named Ralphie Parker, and his mission to obtain a BB gun, his struggles with the neighborhood bully, and, of course, his father’s uncanny fascination with a very peculiar sweepstakes prize:

From left to right: Mr. Parker’s “Major Award” lamp, and the lamp that our Mr. Edwards prefers instead.

At EXAIR, we’re looking forward to news about some Major Awards ourselves. See, four of our new products have been nominated for Product of the Year by Plant Engineering Magazine. If you’re familiar with any of these, and their benefits, we’d appreciate your vote for them:

1104PEEKWhat it is: PEEK 3/8 NPT Super Air Nozzles, engineered for high performance.

Why it’s important: Hard-hitting force, low noise, PEEK plastic construction for non-marring protection and excellent chemical resistance. High amplification of airflow produces a blowing force of 1.9 lbs, with air consumption of only 35 SCFM at 80 psig.

110108What it is: Our Long Super Air Knives, the longest one-piece Air Knife available.

Why it’s important: Uniform, seamless curtain of air flow. 16 lengths in stock, from 3″-108”. Energy efficient & versatile, all sizes are available in aluminum, 303SS, and 316SS. Infinitely adjustable from a gentle blowing flow, to a hard-hitting blast of air.

1109PEEKWhat it is: Our PEEK Pico Super Air Nozzles, designed for precision & performance.

Why it’s important: One of the smallest, most precise engineered nozzle on the market (0.63” long, 0.20” diameter,) perfect for installation in tight spaces. PEEK thermoplastic construction means non-marring protection when used in close proximity to sensitive materials.

7096What it is: Our Long Ionizing Bars, low cost, maximum coverage.

Why it’s important: Available from stock in lengths up to 108”, they dissipate a 5,000V static charge in 0.18 seconds. Small profile fits in confined spaces where static electricity is generated. Shockless and safe for superior reliability.

You’re going to hear more – a LOT more – about these products in the coming days. In fact, if you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, you’ve no doubt heard already. Of course, if you’ve got specific questions about how these – or any EXAIR Intelligent Compressed Air Products – can make an award-worthy impact in your facility, give us a call.

Time is running out to vote for one of our products! The voting window closes January 9, 2015.

Don’t Let Winter Shock You: One Danger to Quality that You Cannot Forget

Winter is coming. The humidity will drop. Electrostatic discharges will rise. We will all be shocked again, and again –  it’s a reality of manufacturing processes in the winter and can cause such a nuisance.

Static Electricity is created by materials such as paper, plastic or textiles rubbing, peeling, or sliding across a surface. Materials normally contain and equal number of positive and negative charges. As the two surfaces come into contact electrons will transfer from one material to another.  If these surfaces are not electrically grounded, they will gather a charge.  For instance, if you rub your sock across the carpeted floor before you reach out and touch your kid sister over the holidays, you may be able to shock her enough to take her eyes off of Instagram.  This is the same phenomenon that you can also see in lightning storms on a meteorological scale.

Electrostatic discharges may only be a nuisance to you and me as we climb in and out of cars, open door knobs, or touch our computers, but for a number of industries the rise in static will make producing quality products in  a timely manner significantly more difficult. Printing, packaging and slitting operations can be stopped or ruined by static. Some of these applications require a very long static eliminators between 60 and 108 inches.

Ion Bar
Two long ion bars remove static from laminated panel.

For wide web applications EXAIR builds Long Ion Bars up to 108″ in length. These bars can clean up printing errors caused by static in large inkjet printers.  They can eliminate static before or after a slitting operation. Also, they can eliminating static before painting or staining.  These bars will be invaluable to the paper, textile, film or plastic industry as winter continues to lower the humidity.

It is an honor to be recognized

Back on June 10, 2014 we introduced our new Long Super Air Knives in one-piece construction, up to 108”, an industry first! The new, longer one-piece design eliminates the need for coupling shorter length knives to cover wider applications. Using a 40:1 amplification rate (surrounding air to compressed air), the unit(s) delivery a high velocity, laminar sheet of airflow that can be easily adjusted. Available in aluminum, 303 and 316 stainless steel, in STOCK and ready to ship!
