Just Needs A Little More To The Left

I’ve come across many applications where customers run multiple different parts or products along the same line, and each requires some form of blowoff before moving to the next stage. Too often, a system designed for just one specific part can’t keep up with the variations. Sometimes the “solution” ends up being to crank up the compressed air, which is wasteful and inefficient.

Instead of increasing air pressure or fabricating new mounts every time there’s a changeover, consider installing EXAIR’s Stay Set Hoses or Swivel Fittings.

            Stay Set Hoses are flexible and hold their shape once positioned, making them ideal for quickly adapting to different parts on the line. Available in 1/8″ and 1/4″ MNPT fittings (or a mix of both) and various lengths, these hoses can support anything from a Nano Super Air Nozzle to a Super Air Amplifier—or even a Super Air Knife. Repositioning them is easy: just bend the hose by hand to aim the airflow exactly where it’s needed for the new part.

                Swivel Fittings may be a better fit if your application doesn’t require much flexibility but still needs occasional fine-tuning. These allow up to 25 degrees of movement off axis, are made of durable 303 stainless steel, and help you easily refocus nozzles without a full tear down.

How Do You Mount An EXAIR Super Air Knife?

This is a fairly common question for the Application Engineering team. The quick (and fairly accurate) answer is: “Any way you want.”

Let’s unpack that a little, though. We’re obviously constrained by the laws of physics, so the method of mounting it has to be structurally sound enough to support the Super Air Knife’s weight, and the reaction force of the compressed air discharge. 3″ Super Air Knives can actually be mounted (and supplied with compressed air) using Stay Set Hoses, if you have an air line ‘drop’ nearby. If not, you can use a Magnetic Base to hold the Stay Set Hose and the Super Air Knife:

Longer Super Air Knives can be installed just about as easily with Universal Air Knife Mounting Systems. Air Knives up to 18″ long use one Model 9060 Mounting System. Longer Air Knives need multiple Mounting Systems for proper support.

Because of their design, though, there are a number of other ways to mount a Super Air Knife. If you’re using hard pipe to supply compressed air, a shorter-length Super Air Knife will essentially be as well-supported as the pipe itself. I’ve talked to users who have successfully installed 6″ and 9″ Aluminum Super Air Knives in this manner. We wouldn’t recommend doing that with anything longer than that, due to concerns about overhung loading. The exception to that would be a Super Air Knife installed vertically…and even then, I’m unaware of anyone doing that with any Super Air Knife longer than 12″.

Curiously, though, you can use the supply piping for longer models. A Super Air Knife over 18″ in length will need to be supplied with compressed air to both ends. A properly supported pipe holding up either side offers a great deal of stability.

This Model 110054 54″ Aluminum Super Air Knife is well supported by its black iron supply pipe.

Super Air Knives also have 1/4-20 threaded holes along the bottom of the body. These are the ‘leftover’ threads below the cap screw ends that hold the cap to the body. Those cap screws can also be replaced with longer 1/4-20 hardware. That allows you to use a bracket of your choosing to mount it. We have customers who have gotten downright creative with those:

Stay Set Hoses:The Stay Set Hose gives you that possibility of manually adjusting and re-adjusting smaller EXAIR products like Super Air Nozzles and Air Jets.  The hose has a “memory” function, and it will not creep or droop until you physically move it.  They work very well in directing the air flows at specific target areas.  The Stay Set Hoses come in lengths from 6” (15cm) to 36” (91cm), and they have threaded connections with either ¼” NPT male on both ends or with a 1/8” NPT female X ¼” NPT male thread.  The hoses are made from reinforced synthetic rubber and have a pressure rating of 250 PSIG (17 bar).  They can add versatility to our Safety Air Guns and Blow-off Stations.  If you need positioning for precise blowing or adjustments for different targets, the Stay Set Hoses would be a nice addition to include with your EXAIR products.

Magnetic Bases: If you need a solid mount to steel surfaces or to move your blow-off system to different locations, a Magnetic Base will allow you to do these functions.  It has a 100 lb. (45.5Kg) pulling force to keep the blowing device attached firmly until you want to move it.  They can be mounted in a vertical or horizontal position.  EXAIR offers a single outlet Magnetic Base or a dual outlet Magnetic Base (for multiple blowing products).
