When to Use a Receiver Tank for a Compressed Air Application

Recently, I worked with a production engineer at a Tier 1 supplier for the auto industry.  An upcoming project was in the works to install a new line to produce headlight lenses.  As a part of the process, there was to be a “De-static / Blow-off” station, where a shuttle system would bring a pair of the parts to a station where they would be blown off and any static removed prior to being transferred to a painting fixture and sent off for painting.  For best results, the lenses were to be dust and lint free and have no static charge, ensuring a perfect paint result.

The customer installed a pair of 18″ Gen4 Super Ion Air Knives, to provide coverage of the widest 16″ lens assembly, that were staged in pairs.

The customer was limited in compressed air supply volume in the area of the plant where this process was to occur. 50 SCFM of 80 PSIG was the expected air availability at peak use times, which posed a problem –  the Super Ion Air Knives would need up to 105 SCFM if operated at 80 PSIG.  A further review of the design parameters for the process revealed that the system needed to blow air for only 4 seconds and would be off for 25 seconds to meet the target throughput.

This scenario lends itself perfectly to the use of a Receiver Tank.  Running all of the design numbers into the calculations, showed that the 60 Gallon Receiver Tank we offer, would allow for a 20 second run-time, and require 13.1 seconds to refill.  These figures were well within the requires times, and would allow for the system to work as needed, without having to do anything to the compressed air supply system.

The moral of the story is – if you have a process that is intermittent, and the times for and between blow-off, drying, or cooling allows, a Receiver Tank can be used to allow you to get the most of your available compressed air system.

The Case Is Mounting For Stay Set Hoses

So, you’ve selected a quiet, efficient, and safe EXAIR Super Air Nozzle for your blow off application – good call! – and now you’re thinking about how to install it.  Sometimes, it’s as simple as replacing whatever you’re using right now:

EXAIR Intelligent Compressed Air Products have common NPT (or BSP) connections, making for easy replacement of most any existing threaded device.

Or maybe you’re using an open end blow off…in which case, you’re just an adapter away:

EXAIR Super Air Nozzles are quick and easy to install on existing copper tube, via a simple compression fitting.

Perhaps, though, it’s a new installation, or the existing supply lines aren’t suitable for one reason or another.  In those cases, we’ve still got you covered…consider the EXAIR Stay Set Hose:

Precise aiming and location is a breeze with EXAIR Stay Set Hoses.

Available in a variety of lengths from 6″ to 36″, they’re positionable, and re-positionable with a simple bending action.  They won’t kink or easily fatigue like copper tubing.  The supply end is 1/4  MNPT, and you have your choice of 1/4 MNPT or 1/8 FNPT on the other end, depending on which Super Air Nozzle, Air Jet you need to use it with.

We also offer Blow Off Systems, which are a combination of a specific Air Nozzle (or Air Jet,) fitted to a Stay Set Hose:

Stay Set Hoses are also available with a variety of our Soft Grip Safety Air Guns, and they make the GEN4 Stay Set Ion Air Jet one of our most popular Static Eliminator products.  They’ve even been successfully applied with small Air Amplifiers and Air Knives…with certain limitations (spoiler alert: trying this with a 108″ Super Air Knife is going to be a definite “no.”)

When you work with us here at EXAIR, we strive to have all the ancillary items that you might need to make your installation a success, without having to find components at the last minute or perhaps using the wrong sized components. Each specific product line such as Super Air Knives or Line Vac air operated conveyors have specific accessories such as mounting brackets or plumbing kits which EXAIR has made to simplify the installation of those particular products. We also carry generalized accessories which work across all of the product lines so you do not have to use multiple vendors or purchase orders.

Silencing Mufflers – Per OSHA Standard 1910.95(a), a worker must not be exposed to sounds levels above 90 dBA for any eight hour shift of a 40 hour work week.  EXAIR offers several types of mufflers including – Reclassifying, Sintered Bronze, Straight-Through and Heavy Duty.  For reducing the noise associated with an EXAIR E-Vac Generator, Vortex Tube, Cabinet Cooler System, or the exhaust air from cylinders, valves and other air powered equipment, we’ve got a muffler that will help to keep the noise level at an acceptable level.

Solenoid and Manual Valves – The easiest way to reduce compressed air usage and save on operating expense is to turn off the compressed air to a device when it isn’t needed. EXAIR carries a wide assortment of solenoid valves, with offerings in the NEMA 4/4X classification, and supply voltages of 24VDC, 120VAC, and 240VAC.  We also have manual ball valves from 1/4 NPT to 1-1/4 NPT and a foot operated valve, with 1/4 NPT connections.

Swivel Fittings, Stay Set Hoses and Magnetic Bases – To provide a great degree of flexibility for positioning an EXAIR Super Air Nozzle, Air Jets or Air Amplifiers, EXAIR offers several items.  The Swivel Fittings have 25 degree of movement from the center axis, providing a total of 50 degree of adjustability.  The position is locked in place and holds until adjustment is needed. For applications where frequent re-positioning of the air device is required, the Stay Set Hoses are ideal.  Simply mount the hose close to the application, bend it to the shape preferred, and because the hose has “memory”, it will not creep or bend.  Lastly, the Magnetic Bases are another option for flexible, movable installations.  The base has a on/off valve, and a powerful magnet to hold in any vertical or horizontal mounting arrangement.

Hoses – EXAIR can provide hoses for your application.  For the Line Vac air operated conveyor applications, we offer conveyance hose – a durable, clear reinforced PVC hose, in diameters of 3/8″ to 3″ ID, and lengths up to 50′. On the compressed air side, we can provide 12′ Coiled Hoses with 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 NPT connections, and also 3/8″ and 1/2″ ID hose in lengths to 50′.

Filter Separators, Oil Removal Filters and Pressure Regulators – Perhaps the most important accessories for use on a compressed air device are filters and regulators. Filtering the compressed air of dirt, debris, moisture and oil will help to prevent build up inside the EXAIR products, leading to longer service life, and less time spent cleaning, while providing optimum performance. Regulating the air pressure allows for tuning of the performance, using the proper amount of compressed air to obtain satisfactory results.

Everybody Wants Options III: Options You Can’t Live Without

I wanted to call today’s blog “Everybody Wants Options III: Back to the Future Past.” But, I wanted to get your attention so I settled on Options You Can’t Live Without. In this case, I’ll choose to jump on the bandwagon and just like Hollywood, if we have a hit of a blog topic, we are going to make as many sequels as we can. After Justin wrote about ordering options in Everybody Wants Options, Russ followed it up with the blockbuster Everybody Wants Options II: Is Bigger Better?. I hopefully will conclude the series with “Everybody Wants Options III: Options You Can’t Live Without:, which is also the conclusion to my OSHA compliant Air Gun Primer, which I have already started here and here.

I don’t know though, maybe in twenty years they will want to make two more trilogies after “the mouse” buys us. Perhaps even JAR JAR Binks could write the blog.  …Mesir wants Yousir to buy BEST AIR NOZZLE EVER… 

Last week, I spoke about how important it is to get the right air gun for your shop, so that your employees are safer, more efficient and effective.  Today, I want to talk about the Safety Air Gun themselves and why you would select each one.

EXAIR Safety Air guns include the Precision Safety Air Gun, the Soft Grip Safety Air Gun, the Heavy Duty Safety Air Gun, and the Super Blast Safety Air Gun.

The first step in figuring out which gun will work for you is to figure out how much force and flow you need to get the job done. If you do not know the force and flow of your existing solution, the second step is to contact EXAIR and speak with one of our Application Engineers. They can assist you with the best choice air gun for your application or measure force, flow, and noise levels of any of your current air nozzles, open pipes, air guns etc. and provide a report through our efficiency lab service.

The Precision Safety Air Guns are the smallest, lightest and lowest flow safety air guns. This gun has the smallest diameter nozzle and extension which fits in to tight spaces. It will fit best in smaller hands, and is suitable for light duty applications and environments. They can generate between 2 ounces to 8.1 ounces of force. They can produce flows between 2.5 SCFM to 8.3 SCFM of compressed air.

Our most common Safety Air Guns are the Soft Grip Safety Air Gun. These guns are cast aluminum with a comfortable ergonomic grip to help relieve fatigue. Soft Grip guns resist rugged industrial environments and have a built in hanger hook for easy storage. They utilize the same small nozzles as the Precision Safety Air Guns, but can also use EXAIR’s whole series of air nozzles up to 1/2 NPT Safety Air Nozzle.  These flows range from 2.5 SCFM up to 60 SCFM. The force of these guns can range from 2.0 Ounces up to 3.3 pounds of force.

If the Soft Grip Safety Air isn’t enough power for your shop, the Heavy Duty Safety Air Gun will give you a powerful rugged gun for industrial environments.  This gun is also cast aluminum with a slightly larger handle and a soft rubber grip with a full length trigger. The Heavy Duty Safety Air Gun features a steel 3/8″ NPT air inlet for added durability against the harshest of environments.  This air inlet can generate force from 22 ounces of force up to 3.3 pounds of force.

Finally, if you need more than the Heavy Duty Safety Air Gun, we have to call the Super Blast Safety Air Gun, which can generate up to 23 pounds of force.  Batten down the hatches when you turn this thing on and it will conquer the heaviest duty blow off or cleaning applications such as removing scale from steel.  This gun features an Spring Loaded Manual Valve, which will automatically shut off, if dropped.

And don’t forget…on top of these choices of guns and nozzles, EXAIR’s air guns can be outfitted with light weight aluminum extensions up to 72″ long. They also can be outfitted with a chip shield for eye protection.  If you need to get into a tight spot we have Stay Set Hoses mounted on the Heavy Duty Safety Air Gun or Soft Grip Safety Air Guns.
