EXAIR Accessories – We’ve Got you Covered

When you work with us here at EXAIR, we strive to have all the ancillary items that you might need to make your installation a success, without having to find components at the last minute or perhaps using the wrong sized components. Each specific product line such as Super Air Knives or Line Vac air operated conveyors have specific accessories such as mounting brackets or plumbing kits which EXAIR has made to simplify the installation of those particular products. We also carry generalized accessories which work across all of the product lines so you do not have to use multiple vendors or purchase orders.

Silencing Mufflers – Per OSHA Standard 1910.95(a), a worker must not be exposed to sounds levels above 90 dBA for any eight hour shift of a 40 hour work week.  EXAIR offers several types of mufflers including – Reclassifying, Sintered Bronze, Straight-Through and Heavy Duty.  For reducing the noise associated with an EXAIR E-Vac Generator, Vortex Tube, Cabinet Cooler System, or the exhaust air from cylinders, valves and other air powered equipment, we’ve got a muffler that will help to keep the noise level at an acceptable level.

Solenoid and Manual Valves – The easiest way to reduce compressed air usage and save on operating expense is to turn off the compressed air to a device when it isn’t needed. EXAIR carries a wide assortment of solenoid valves, with offerings in the NEMA 4/4X classification, and supply voltages of 24VDC, 120VAC, and 240VAC.  We also have manual ball valves from 1/4 NPT to 1-1/4 NPT and a foot operated valve, with 1/4 NPT connections.

Swivel Fittings, Stay Set Hoses and Magnetic Bases – To provide a great degree of flexibility for positioning an EXAIR Super Air Nozzle, Air Jets or Air Amplifiers, EXAIR offers several items.  The Swivel Fittings have 25 degree of movement from the center axis, providing a total of 50 degree of adjustability.  The position is locked in place and holds until adjustment is needed. For applications where frequent re-positioning of the air device is required, the Stay Set Hoses are ideal.  Simply mount the hose close to the application, bend it to the shape preferred, and because the hose has “memory”, it will not creep or bend.  Lastly, the Magnetic Bases are another option for flexible, movable installations.  The base has a on/off valve, and a powerful magnet to hold in any vertical or horizontal mounting arrangement.

Hoses – EXAIR can provide hoses for your application.  For the Line Vac air operated conveyor applications, we offer conveyance hose – a durable, clear reinforced PVC hose, in diameters of 3/8″ to 3″ ID, and lengths up to 50′. On the compressed air side, we can provide 12′ Coiled Hoses with 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 NPT connections, and also 3/8″ and 1/2″ ID hose in lengths to 50′.

Filter Separators, Oil Removal Filters and Pressure Regulators – Perhaps the most important accessories for use on a compressed air device are filters and regulators. Filtering the compressed air of dirt, debris, moisture and oil will help to prevent build up inside the EXAIR products, leading to longer service life, and less time spent cleaning, while providing optimum performance. Regulating the air pressure allows for tuning of the performance, using the proper amount of compressed air to obtain satisfactory results.

“(Stay) Set It And Forget It”

The Stay Set Hose is a popular, and practical, accessory for use with many of our blow-off products. Thread one end onto a compressed air supply connection, thread a Super Air Nozzle (or maybe even a small Air Amplifier or short Air Knife) onto the other end, and you’ve got an easily repositionable blow off…which will reliably hold its position.

That last part was of considerable importance to a caller I had the pleasure of assisting recently. Some of the CNC machines in their shop were fitted with flexible plastic tubing (commonly used for coolant & cutting fluid,) supplied with compressed air to blow off chips & debris from the tooling as the parts were being machined. They use our Super Air Knives in other blow off processes (where they used to use costly & loud open blow off devices,) and wanted to see if engineered products might reduce their compressed air consumption & noise levels in the machine shop too. (spoiler alert: Yes, they can.)

Thing is, they really needed the flexibility of the modular hose, but it’s not rated for the pressure supply required for a Super Air Nozzle. This is what makes our engineered products so efficient; they use the Coanda effect to amplify the compressed airflow..and they use the supply pressure to do that. So they can’t install a Super Air Nozzle on what they have now.

Enter the Stay Set Hoses: They’ll bend to direct the nozzles’ air flow right where you need it, and they’ll keep it there until you bend it again. Which (back to what’s most important to this caller) is exactly what they needed. With our efficient & quiet Super Air Nozzles, they’re saving compressed air and improving the conditions of their work environment. With the Stay Set Hoses, they’re able to quickly & easily rig the air flow before running a job, knowing they won’t have to worry about it until the job’s done.

This Is A Hold Up

To clarify, right off the bat:

  1. Nobody is getting robbed here.
  2. Nothing is being delayed, especially a shipment from EXAIR. If it’s in the catalog, it ships on time, 99.97% of the time, for 17 years & running. This has nothing to do with this blog; I just never get tired of bragging about that.

Today I wanted to write about installing EXAIR products, but hey, it’s Friday, so I thought I’d start with something that would get your attention. If you’re still reading, I guess it worked.

We talk to users…and potential users…all the time about how to install an Air Knife, Air Nozzle, Vortex Tube, etc. And the answer is…it depends. But, it’s almost always quick and easy.

Consider the EXAIR Super Air Knife. There are a few ways to hold one in place:
*There are 1/4″-20 tapped holes, every 2″ along the bottom. These can be used to bolt it to just about anything you want to bolt it to.
*The 1/4″-20 cap screws can also be replaced with fasteners of sufficient length to allow use of a bracket. In fact, this is what we use for…
*The Universal Air Knife Mounting System – it’s a quick and convenient way to support an Air Knife. It’s especially beneficial to precisely position the Super Air Knife for optimum performance.
*Last but not least, Super Air Knives 24″ and longer need to be plumbed to both ends for proper performance. If you hard pipe it in, it’ll be as well supported as the piping.

Then there’s our Super Air Nozzles:
*With standard, common NPT threads, these are easy to install anywhere you have an existing air line. You can get NPT adapters for darn near any threaded connection, off the shelf, from a friendly local air compressor or hydraulic/pneumatics shop.
*We’ve got Stay Set Hoses in lengths from 6″ to 36″ – these let you reposition the Air Nozzle at will. It’ll “stay set” until you bend it again.

EXAIR Now Offers Swivel Fittings Up To 1″ NPT!

Fresh off the production floor is our newly designed 1″ NPT Swivel fitting, model 9204.  This swivel fitting, much like the rest of our swivel offering is, constructed of 303 Stainless Steel, both male and female threads, 25° of adjustment from center line which makes for a total of 50° for adjustment.

This makes the eighth swivel fitting that has been released from EXAIR.  We now offer swivels that have M4 x 0.5mm thread up to a 1″ NPT thread.   A total of 61 different nozzles from EXAIR can be combined with the swivel fittings we offer to give adjust-ability when installing a Super Air Nozzle into a tight place or within an application that requires slight adjustments to the aiming of the nozzle.

The Nano Super Air Nozzle is available with an M6 x 0.75 thread OR a 1/8 NPT thread.

I recently took a call from a customer who was looking for a Nano Super Air Nozzle with a swivel and NPT threads.  We have two versions of this (see above) thanks to our plethora of options.  We offer a newer Mini Swivel Fitting that will allow the M6 thread of the Nano Super Air Nozzle to go straight into the swivel joint and it gives you a 1/8″ MNPT on the opposite side.  This still permits the 25° from center range of motion as the standard swivels do but, with a smaller footprint,  is able to get into tighter spaces.

The other option is to utilize a model 1110SS-NPT which is a Nano Super Air Nozzle w/ 1/8″ NPT adapter, then add a 1/8″ NPT Swivel fitting which is a model 9052.  This option is a little bulkier, but if you needed some extra length on the nozzle side to get closer to the target area then it would be helpful.   This unit also offers the 25° from center range of motion and still gives a 1/8″ MNPT thread to plug into your system.

As you can see in the picture above, the Mini Swivel fitting with Nano Super Air Nozzle is a more compact option, but does not reach as far as the standard 1/8″ swivel with NPT Nano Super Air Nozzle.  No matter the case, we have them both in stock and ready to ship same day on orders received by 3 PM EST that are shipping within the states.

Retrofit a Brand New Machine? No Problem!

Have you ever had a brand new machine or line that you built or just got installed into your facility only to find out you need an extra blow off, cooling, or vacuum operation. Not to mention, most of the time it would benefit for this additional process to be intermittently controlled to provide an on demand type situation. I recently helped a customer that had this exact scenario.  He was the machine builder and once the machine was installed at the customer’s, they discovered some of the product processes his machine depended on had changed.  This left his machine to pick up the slack where others had left off. Rather than trying to push blame around to other pieces of equipment he told the customer that the problems will be solved.  That’s when he called us.  You see, this customer had used our products before in numerous other applications.  His customized machinery was used in a wide variety of process so he had an existing knowledge of our vast product offerings.

The machine he was working on was supposed to be a final process of activating a shrink film that is applied to a part then pass the part on to a transfer line for bulk packaging.  What he didn’t know is the shrink wrap size originally quoted and tested on prototypes had changed.  So now, instead of having a nice tight shrink wrap on the part, it now had excess on three sides that was not desired by the customer.  The excess wrap would tend to cause problems when trying to unpack these bulk products. When this was discovered the customer had an operator physically fold each tail while it is still in a melted state in order to have a tightly packed product and aesthetically pleasing package.  This is not only tying an operator up which is costing money but it is also increasing their cycle time and not to mention the operators didn’t like handling hot shrink wrap.

Once we discussed the products shape and size we determined the best solution is going to be use a combination of Super Air Knives, and 2″ Super Air Nozzles.  The way the product would come through the tunnel there would be a tail on both sides of the conveyor, then a final tail the full width of the product on the trailing edge.  The product was for all intents and purposes a rectangle with a curve to it.  To combat the tails that are on the side I recommended to use a 2″ Super Air Nozzle combined with our 1/4″ Swivel Fitting to permit the angle of air to be adjusted. The 2″ Super Air Nozzle would be mounted below the level of the conveyor and angled up and to the center of the conveyor.   The product will be passed through this air stream and the tail will be folded on each side as it passes the nozzle.   This will provide enough air to get the shrink wrap folded on top of the product and take care of both sides.  Then, the only piece remaining was the trailing edge tail.   The nozzles on the side would not take care of this so I recommended to mount two Super Air Knives below the surface of the conveyor in between the heat tunnel conveyor and the product transfer conveyor.  The two conveyors had a 2″ gap which is more than enough for the air stream from two Super Air Knives.  The reason we used two separate knives is, the product was the width of the product would require a 60″ Super Air Knife to cover the full width.  However because of the curve in the product there was only 15″ on each side of the product that had a tail.   This meant 2 separate knives that would blow up from below the product and toward the travel of the conveyor.   This would permit the shrink wrap to be pushed up initially then forced over onto itself  as it proceeded down the transfer line.  This would leave the product in a nice tightly packed shrink wrap with no tails to get caught up when bulk packed.

Now that we had the method, the next step was to ensure we only used the compressed air when needed.  There was no point in having the nozzles and Air Knives blow constantly, as the product was intermittently placed on the conveyor.  Because this was an existing machine and the blow off was being retrofitted into the existing system I recommended to use an Electronic Flow Control which would sense the windshield and trigger an On Timer.  This would then provide the correct length of time for the product to not only pass the sensor but also pass the gap in the conveyors by several inches to insure it was fully processed.   We were able to use one EFC to power all 4 products to optimize this newly designed system.

All together by calling us the customer not only solved his customers issues but also made up for other machines shortcomings.   Because our products were able to fit into the areas needed along with the EFC’s flexibility to be mounted and installed on an existing system the customer had the exact finished product they had hoped for.   Not only was our customer pleased with the level of service we offered but was extremely pleased that we had such quick turn around time for help and shipping of the products.   This was further expressed by his customer who was extremely content with his new machine and is now discussing expansion to yet another line.
