No Drip Internal Mix Deflected Fan and 360° Hollow Circular Pattern Atomizing Nozzles

EXAIR offers a wide variety of  Atomizing Spray Nozzles that can be used to coat, rinse or cool a surface. We manufacture (3) different types – Internal Mix, External Mix, and Siphon Fed – as well as 3 different sizes – 1/8″ NPT, 1/4″ NPT and 1/2″ NPT – all in 303ss construction, rated up to 400°F.

Today, I would like to focus on 2 specific Atomizing Nozzles – our No Drip Internal Mix Deflected Fan Nozzle and our Internal Mix 360° Hollow Circular Pattern Nozzle.

Model AD2010SS – No Drip Internal Mix Deflected Flat Fan Atomizing Nozzle, 6.9 GPH, 1/4″ NPT

The No Drip Internal Mix Deflected Fan Atomizing Nozzle produces a flat fan of atomized liquid at a right angle to the nozzle’s orientation and is designed for use in pressured fed applications where the liquid doesn’t need to be controlled independently from the pressurized air. This nozzle is the perfect choice in processes where mounting space is limited like spraying solvent on conveyed parts inside a small chamber or coating the inside of an enclosure. The patented No Drip feature positively stops the liquid flow when the supply air pressure drops below 30 PSIG, eliminating the need for any additional valves or supply lines.  This is especially beneficial in applications using expensive fluids or where drips can ruin a finished product. This nozzle is available with 1/4″ NPT inlets and flows as high as 6.9 gallons per hour.

Our Internal Mix 360° Hollow Circular Pattern Atomizing Nozzles produce a circular spray pattern, the ideal solution when trying to coat the inside of ductwork or where a broad mist of atomized liquid is necessary, like dust suppression or humidification. Available in 1/4″ NPT with flows as high as 14.7 GPH and spray diameters up to 53″ in diameter  depending on air and liquid supply pressures. With the 1/2″ NPT, we can achieve up to 150 GPH with a spray diameter up to 156″. Our  standard Atomizing Nozzles also feature an adjustment valve to provide control of the flow rate, making them easy to adapt to a specific requirement.

Super Air Wipe Controls Coating Thickness On Tubing

A large manufacturing company called looking for a better solution to control the thickness of a curing agent being applied to the outside of tubing used in the automotive industry. The tubing is formed in an extruder and travels through a liquid cooling chamber and then air dried. After the tubing is dried, it is sent to a spray chamber where the curing agent is applied to the exterior. On the exit side of the spray chamber, the customer had installed several flexible air lines placed around the perimeter of the tubing to blow air across the surface to help control the coating thickness. This worked somewhat but they were seeing an increase in the amount of rejected material as the air pattern was sporadic and uneven, which caused streaking and dry spots in certain areas of the tubing. They reviewed our web site and familiarized themselves with our Air Wipes but were unsure of the best design and size to fit their need so they reached out for assistance.

After further discussing the process, their tube O.D. sizes range from 3/8″ – 1/2″, making our 1″ Air Wipe the ideal solution. As far as the design, the Standard or Super Air Wipe, I recommended they use our Model # 2451 Super Air Wipe kit due to the aluminum construction and stainless steel wired braided hoses being able to withstand the potential temperature in the area of 200°F. The kit includes a filter separator to remove any water or contaminants in the supply and a pressure regulator which would allow them to control the flow and force of the exiting air, to help “dial” it in to fit the demand of the application.

Super Air Wipe is available in sizes from 1/2″ up to 11″ in Aluminum construction and up to 4″ in Stainless Steel construction.

360° Hollow Circular Atomizing Nozzle Ideal For Treating Ductwork

There are many times we field calls from customers that fall directly in line with the intended use of one of our products. Such would be the case last week when a customer called looking for  a more reliable way to spray a light coating of rust inhibitor on the inside of a small section of ductwork roughly 9″ in diameter.  They were currently using a liquid only spray nozzle but were having trouble controlling the output flow, as well as the actual spray pattern. They were wasting a lot of the inhibitor as it was starting to “pool” in the bottom of the ductwork which would ultimately leak out onto the production floor and operator’s work area when the parts were prepared for shipment, also creating an unsafe work environment.

After discussing the application with the customer, I recommended our Model # AT1010SS Internal Mix 360° Hollow Circular Pattern Atomizing Nozzle. The circular spray pattern is the ideal solution when trying to coat the inside of a duct with rust preventative. The nozzle produces an even spray pattern up to 53″ in diameter with flows as much as 14.7 gallons per hour of liquid, depending on air and liquid supply pressures. Our Atomizing Nozzles also feature an adjustment valve to provide control of the flow rate as well. The 303ss construction is able to withstand corrosive environments and temperatures up to 400°F (204°C).

Will Water Move Through EXAIR Air Knives and Air Wipes? (Images included)

Today, I would like to discuss a question that comes up time and time again over the years.  “What happens when I put water through a Super Air Knife?” That raised another question from myself of what about a Super Air Wipe?

The answer is quite simple, it will come out, just not as good as compressed air does.   The engineering and design for Super Air Knives were all based around compressed air use.  With any good product of course comes the question in time, how else can we use this?   A number of applications for the Super Air Knife is blowing moisture off a part that has been applied through a series of wash/rinse nozzles.  What if the knife could apply the liquid and then a second knife could remove the liquid.  Below are some images from testing that was done on a Stainless Steel Super Air Knife at various gap sizes and various pressures.    The “best” performance visually was from operating the air knife with .004″ gap and approximately  a 17 PSIG inlet pressure (this is for a 12″ Super Air Knife).

As you can see in the photos, the water does flow fairly well immediately out of the knife, and becomes more turbulent as it gets further away from the knife.   The stream actually begins to break up and thus the effective distance of the knife may be reduced when using it to flow liquids.   This is not going to perform like a pressure washer, the maximum distance for the stream of liquid before it completely fell off was around 10′ from the discharge point.   If this were to be used to remove loose debris or to cover a part in water to help cool the part the stream would be more than enough to perform.

As noted above the operating pressure was fairly low, and the gap was at a .004″ thickness.  I recently tested a 1″ Stainless Steel Super Air Wipe as well.  The shim gap was once again set to .004″ thick to permit a better flow and a low pressure, approximately 10-12 psig inlet pressure.  As you can see the flow of water is not as smooth as the air flow out of a Super Air Wipe but if a light rinsing process was needed, or a water cooling process, this would work well.

So the answer to the main question at hand is yes, a Super Air Knife and Super Air Wipe will both operate with a pressurized liquid source under the correct circumstances.   While they do not operate exactly like they do with compressed air, the results still prove useful in certain applications.

Oil And Water Don’t Mix, But Oil And Air Sure Do

Do you have oil in your compressed air system? It may be there on purpose…air operated tools require it, and there are a number of devices on the market that provide a precise amount of oil to keep the moving parts in these tools well lubricated and properly operating.

If it’s not there on purpose, it’s not necessarily a problem, though, and it’s hardly uncommon. Many air compressors are oil lubricated, which means there’s oil being pumped at a constant rate, directly towards the piston rings, and a little bit is always going to end up in the air. As the rings wear, even more makes it past…this is impossible to prevent, but, with proper maintenance, it’s kept to a very minimal amount. There are, of course, oil-less compressor designs, which can eliminate this entirely, but they’ve been known to carry a little heavier price tag. Some situations, though, make them worth every penny.

Trace amounts of oil like this don’t affect a lot of compressed air applications, including the performance of most of our products. There are times, however, when oil needs to be addressed…for instance:

*Blow off prior to painting or coating. Even trace amounts of oil on a surface to be painted can cause big problems.
*Electrical enclosure cooling. Oil won’t affect the heat removal performance of an EXAIR Cabinet Cooler System, but it can indeed cause serious issues with electrical/electronic components and devices if it’s present in the cold air that’s blowing on them.
*Air operated conveyors. Likewise, oil won’t hurt the performance of a Line Vac, but keep in mind that anything in the air supply will get on the material or product you’re conveying.
*Static Eliminators. Here’s a situation where oil in the air WILL have an effect on product performance…the emitter points of your EXAIR Static Eliminator need to be kept clean (including oil free) for proper operation. And, again, anything in your air is going to get onto your product.

This is where proper filtration comes in: properly installed downstream of a Filter Separator, EXAIR’s coalescing Oil Removal Filters take out even trace amounts of oil from the air flow, ensuring your process doesn’t see anything but clean, dry air.
