Atomizing Nozzles – No Drip Deflected Flat Fan and 360° Hollow Circular

EXAIR manufactures three types of Atomizing Nozzles – Internal Mix, External Mix, and Siphon Fed.  Within the Internal Mix family, there are two specialty nozzles, the Deflected Flat Fan and the 360° Hollow Circular patterns.

Internal Mix nozzles are for pressure fed applications not requiring independent air and liquid control.

The model AD2010SS is the No Drip version of the Deflected Flat Fan and is shown below. Our patented No Drip design prevents unwanted post spray drips from wasting expensive fluids or ruining product finishes. The benefit to this design is that no secondary compressed air line is necessary to activate the on/off valve for the liquid, which is the case for competitive nozzles.

The Deflected Flat Fan patterned nozzle is designed for applications where space is a limited.  The spray pattern is at a right angle to the orientation of the nozzle, allowing the spray to be placed precisely where it is needed in tight quarters.  They are ideal for coating the insides of enclosures and ductwork.

The 360° Hollow Circular patterned nozzle is designed for applications where the spray pattern is to be orientated away form the nozzle in all directions.  They are ideal where a smooth and even coating is needed on the internal surface of a pipe or duct.  They are also good for processed where a mist is needed over a large area, including dust suppression, humidification, and cooling.

The No Drip feature is a patented† design that has the added benefit of positively stopping the liquid flow when the compressed air is shut off. Post spray liquid flow can cause quality issues from unwanted drips on painted or coated surfaces.  Also, the No Drip feature helps to conserve and save on liquid use, reducing costs of expensive coatings or chemicals.

When the compressed air supply is shut off, the No Drip nozzle positively seals off the flow of liquid, eliminating over spray and drips. The design allows for just one compressed air line, there is no need for an additional to control the No Drip mechanism.

No Drip Internal Mix Atomizing Nozzles

Eliminate drips to conserve valuable liquids and improve product finishes!  EXAIR’s patented No Drip Atomizing Nozzle provides the same great performance as the the standard atomizing nozzles with the added benefit of positive liquid flow stoppage when the compressed air is shut off.

The No Drip option eliminates the occurrence of post spray liquid flow that results in unwanted drips that can mar a finish on painted or coated surfaces.  Also, excess liquid loss is minimized saving on expensive materials like chemicals or coatings.  When the compressed air is shut-off, the No Drip nozzle positively seals off the flow, eliminating the chance for a drip or lost liquid. Only one compressed air line is needed, as the line to combine and atomize the liquid also provides the no drip operation and control.

The No Drip Atomizing Nozzles are available in (3) types – Internal Mix, External Mix, and Siphon Fed.

The Internal Mix type operates under the principle that the air and liquid come together and mix ‘internal’ to the nozzle.  This type provides the finest atomization and smallest droplet size. The Internal Mix type of nozzle can be used with liquids up to 300 cP in viscosity.  Both the air and liquid sides are pressure fed.  The No drip Internal Mix Atomizing Nozzles are best for pressure fed applications not requiring independent air and liquid control.

The No Drip Atomizing Nozzles are available in (3) sizes – 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 NPT – to provide a wide range of flow rates and pattern sizes.  The No Drip feature does not impact the flow rates compared to the standard models.  Minimum air pressure operation is 30 PSIG for the 1/4 and 1/2 NPT, and just 20 PSIG for the 1/8 NPT models.

Like the standard Internal Mix Atomizing  Nozzles, spray patterns include narrow and wide angle round, flat fan, deflected flat fan and a 360° hollow circular pattern offering a wide selection to best meet the application needs.

Operation at up to 180 spray cycles per minute is possible.  Air and Liquid Caps can be switched out to change the pattern and flow rates.

Compressed Air Uses In Industry

From pneumatic hand tools like impact wrenches or nail guns to larger scale industrial applications like stamping presses, the use of compressed air can be found in almost any industry. In fact, it is often referred to as a “fourth utility” next to water, gas and electric.

Compressed air is used in virtually every industry!

 

Take for example in construction, workers will use a pneumatic riveter to join steel framing because of the power generated by the tool over an electrically powered device, not to mention it provides for a safer operation by removing an electrical hazard. Many companies use compressed air operated diaphragm pumps or air motor driven pumps to move expensive or viscous liquid from one location to another. These types of pumps are self priming drawing the liquid in and provide positive displacement meaning they fill and empty the liquid chamber with the same amount of liquid through a common inlet and outlet.

Amusement parks have used compressed air in some capacity in the operation of thrill rides like roller coasters or to enhance the effect of certain attractions. Compressed air can be found in hospitals where it is used for specialized breathing treatments or to power surgical instruments in an operating room. Educational facilities use compressed air for laboratory testing. You can even find compressed air in the tires on your car. Basically, when you think about it, compressed air is being used just about anywhere.

Taming The Dust Cloud With EXAIR Atomizing Spray Nozzles

Have you ever dropped one of your nice dinner plates on a tiled kitchen floor? And noticed how they seem to go in slow motion as they hurtle to their doom? I never cease to be impressed at how far some of the smaller pieces can go. I recently had to replace our oven, and I found broken dishware shards (and an impressive amount of trash scraps, pet toys, and ‘dust bunnies’) all the way against the back wall.

Curiously, as small as the pieces can be when a dinner plate meets its end, it started its life in even smaller pieces…as a fine ceramic powder, pressed into a mold and heated to a temperature that is WAY hotter than when the server at your favorite restaurant warns you that plate “might be hot.”

I’m writing about this because recently, I had the pleasure of assisting a maker of ceramic dishware with a messy little problem…this fine ceramic powder is moved from where it’s produced, to the various mold stations (dinner plates, salad plates, saucers, etc.) on a vibratory belt conveyor. The vibration keeps the powder loose and homogenous, both of which are extremely important to the molding & firing process. It also causes a cloud of dust to rise along the entire length of travel, and they wanted to minimize this. Their chemists had told the engineer who called me that they could live with a small amount of moisture, as long as it wasn’t enough to make the powder clump up – this would evaporate out at a point closer to the molds anyway.

This was an ideal application for the EXAIR Atomizing Spray Nozzles…they produce a fine mist of liquid that is precisely controllable…one Model AW1010SS Internal Mix, Wide Angle Round Pattern Nozzle was installed near the beginning of the line, and once they find out how long it takes the dust-suppression supplied by the misted water to evaporate away, they will install more nozzles accordingly.

As Seen At The County Fair

Have you ever been in a public place and noticed one of your company’s products in full view of everyone passing by? Those of you who work for car manufacturers, soda bottlers, or snack food makers (like my three friends that I had this conversation with recently do) may not think it’s a big deal (my friends indeed didn’t), so you’ll have to forgive those of us who work mainly in industrial or commercial markets when we get excited to see something that came from The Shop, while we’re walking around the County Fair.

Years ago, I worked for an industrial weighing equipment company. Every year, we were asked to provide a scale for the County Auditor’s booth at the fair – people could step on this scale, and get their weight automatically printed out on one of the Auditor’s business cards. It was a neat little setup, and my friends who recognized that it came from my employer would all crack wise about how obviously inaccurate this scale was. Since I was the one who calibrated the scale, using test weights that I was responsible for having certified by the state, I knew that the numbers on those printed cards said a lot more about the availability of deep fried candy bars on the midway, than the intrinsic accuracy of our precision instrument.

When I go to the fair this summer (and I will, and not just for the deep fried candy bars), I’m certain it’ll be hot that day…which means I’ll have my eye out for the cooling stations that are always set up along the midway, providing a fine mist of cooling water. In addition to a brief respite from the summer heat, I’ll also be looking for EXAIR Atomizing Spray Nozzles, as this would be an ideal application for our External Mix Atomizing Spray Nozzles. They provide independent control of the liquid flow rate – which will be determined solely by the liquid supply pressure – and the air used to atomize the spray: varying the air pressure won’t affect the amount of liquid; only the size/shape of the flow pattern.

Depending on what you need to spray, how much (or little) of it you need to disperse, and over what kind of area, we also have highly efficient Internal Mix designs, and, if your liquid isn’t able to be pressurized, we have Siphon Fed Spray Nozzles as well.  We recently added No Drip options to all models as well, to conserve expensive solutions, and/or to prevent inadvertent stains, runs, etc.
