Standards, Compliance, And You. And EXAIR.

I’m pretty impressed with the number of safety features my car has. Aside from the literal lifesaving functions like seat belts and air bags, it’s got anti-lock brakes…if you’ve ever had to counter-steer out of a skid on an icy road, you will appreciate the value of this for sure.  Those are just some of the ones I’m keenly aware of – the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards comprise dozens of regulations in three categories: crash avoidance, crashworthiness, and post-crash survivability.  None of these prevent me from operating my vehicle at an unsafe rate of speed…an expensive reality that an Ohio State Highway Patrolman dutifully reminded me of last Sunday afternoon.

Likewise, there are many regulations to ensure safety and prevent hazards of all kinds in industry, administered by a host of agencies that are either subordinates of, or accountable to, the federal government.  When you manufacture products that are used with high energy sources (compressed air or high voltage electricity,) a strong commitment to safety is not negotiable.  So, at EXAIR, we commit considerable resources towards the best engineering and manufacturing practices to make our products as safe as possible.  That includes compliance with a number of standards and certifications:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Labor.  Their mission is to “assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.”  They are a regulatory body in the truest sense, in that they don’t offer certification or approval of products, processes, etc.; they publish guidelines and standards for manufacturers and users to comply with.  OSHA Standard 1910.242(b), for instance, limits the downstream pressure of a compressed air operated device used for cleaning purposes to 30psi. Now, you can regulate the supply pressure to meet this, but that also limits the effectiveness of the air flow generated.  EXAIR Intelligent Compressed Air Products are all designed and manufactured to be in compliance with this standard, at any supply pressure.  Take, for example, our Super Air Nozzles:

Because none of our products can be dead-ended, there’s always a relief path preventing the downstream pressure from exceeding that level.

OSHA also has Standard 1910.95(a), that sets limits for maximum allowable noise exposure.  All EXAIR Intelligent Compressed Air Products, with the exception of some our largest and most power Super Air Nozzles (which aren’t normally used in areas that don’t already require hearing protection anyway) meet the 8-hour exposure limits of this standard.

Hearing loss is the best known, but not the only, ill effect of harmful noise exposure. It can also cause physical and psychological stress, impair concentration, and contribute to workplace accidents or injuries.

CE marking indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold withing the European Economic Area.  Unlike OSHA standards, responsibility for CE marking falls solely with the seller of the product – a CE marked product has been tested and certified to have been made in such a way to meet safety & quality benchmarks specified for that type of product.  All EXAIR products that are defined under applicable directives have been tested according to these standards, and carry the CE mark.

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, or RoHS, is another standard borne from the European Union, and is geared towards public & workplace safety by restricting the use of hazardous materials in the manufacture of electronic & electrical equipment.  Since its inception in 2006, similar standards have been vigorously adopted around the globe.  Electrical portions of EXAIR’s Static Eliminators, EFC Electronic Flow Controls, ETC Electronic Temperature Controls, Digital Flowmeters, Solenoid Valves, and Thermostats all comply with the RoHS Directive.

Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act doesn’t address a concern for product users, but rather a particularly troubling human rights issue – Conflict Minerals.  For almost two decades, trade in tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been used by some very bad people to finance violent campaigns against their neighbors.  EXAIR thoroughly and systematically documents our supply chain compliance with this act.  We are proudly committed to our support for this effort to the world a better place for everyone…especially those in desperate circumstances beyond their control.

EXAIR Leads the Way with Standards and Certifications

For over 34 years, EXAIR has been the industry leader in providing Intelligent Compressed Air Products to the industrial marketplace. While much of our focus is to ensure our products are engineered to provide optimal performance, we are also dedicated to manufacturing products that meet a wide range of standards and directives to promote safety in relation to plant personnel.

 

For instance, all of our compressed air operated products meet or exceed OSHA Standards 29 CFR 1910.242(b), requiring that the outlet pressure of an open pipe, nozzle, air gun, etc., when used for cleaning purposes, must remain below 30 PSI when dead-ended against the skin, as well as Standard 29 CFR 1910.95(a) as a way to protect workers from job related injuries related to dangerous sound levels of 90 dBA and higher.

 

 


Many of our products are also CE Compliant, meeting the mandatory requirements for products intended to be sold in the European Economic Area or “EEA”. For example our Electronic Flow Control and Electronic Temperature Control (ETC) meet the EU (European Union) Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC.

 

 

EXAIR electrically powered devices, like our Static Eliminators and Digital Flowmeters for example, comply with the “Restriction of Hazardous Substances” or RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, including the amendment outlined in the European Commission decision L 214/65.

 

 

We are also committed to providing material that supports the conflict mineral free rule to help aid in the relief of illegal trade of exotic materials, like tungsten, gold, tin and tantalum in the DRC region. Using the CMRT 4.20 template, we document our supply resources to ensure we provide conflict free products, as outlined in Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

 

Lastly, the European Union introduced the REACH program – Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals, as a method to register chemical substances being imported into the EU to protect people and the environment, per Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Title I, Article 3.  Also noted in the program, Title II, Article 7, they state that any product with a substance intended to be released under normal operating conditions, must be registered for quantities totaling more than 1 metric ton per year. Since EXAIR products do not intentionally release or contain any such substances, registration to meet the program is not required.

It’s The End Of The Year As We Know It

That’s right, I think I can successfully use the great R.E.M. song,(as long as you switch world with year) which has been used several times throughout this blog’s life.

The fact of the matter is, 2014 captured us in its vortex and carried us right into 2015.  It was a wild ride both at the office and home.   To start the year off right we continued releasing new products and kept it up for every month of the year.   2014 product additions are listed below with a link to their Press Release:

January – Long Ionizing Bars started off the year with lengths up to 96″ long, now available up to 108″ long!
February – 1″ High Power Flat Super Air Nozzle blew away the competition.
March – The 110 Gallon Heavy Duty HEPA Vac made a clean sweep and left the air clean and breathable.
April – Small NEMA 12 Cabinet Cooler Systems resisted the heat and dirt that pester electrical enclosures.
May – PEEK 3/8″ NPT Super Air Nozzles kept solar panels nice and clean during production.
June – Longer length Super Air Knives cover up to 108″ in a continuous length of laminar blow off.
June – Expanded sizes of our Digital Flowmeter product line
July – Catalog #27 hit the streets as our best catalog yet.
August – PEEK Pico Super Air Nozzles assured precise non-marring blowoff for delicate surfaces.
September – High Power Stainless Steel 1″ Flat Super Air Nozzles saved space and money in hot corrosive environments.
October – No Drip Internal Mix Atomizing Spray Nozzles positively stop the flow of liquid.
November – Mini Swivel Fittings for our Precision Super Air Nozzles made precise blow offs easy.
December – Reversible Drum Vacs now sweep up fluids with CE Compliance.

On top of all the new product releases, we had quite a bit of change in our offices as well.   In February, I was appointed as the new Application Engineer Manager, this was made possible by Kirk Edwards becoming the Director of Sales and Marketing.  In March we welcomed Justin Nicholl as a new Application Engineer to the team.  In April we said goodbye to one of our most experienced Application Engineers with Joe Panfalone retiring (HR has had it easy ever since).  Then in October we welcomed John Ball to our International Application Engineer department.  So needless to say we have been busy here.

At home, I recently welcomed my third daughter into the world the weekend after Thanksgiving and the house hasn’t been the same since.   If you notice I start to blog more about unicorns and glitter, then you will know that I haven’t gotten out of the house that much.

For the 19th consecutive year we recorded a 99.9% on time shipping record (it was actually 99.97%!) and we have to thank all of our customer service, production and shipping/receiving folks for all they do to keep our performance at that level – amazing!

Our social media efforts included 269 blogs, increasing our YouTube channel videos to 52, started a G+ page, and even kept Professor Penurious (and his videos) around for another year. We expanded our website Knowledge Base by adding 6 more case studies, increasing our FAQ’s and updating the PowerPoint presentations available for download.

All of this action made for a fantastic 2014. We thank all of you for doing business with EXAIR and appreciating our quirks (aka Professor Penurious/our individual Twitter accounts).  May your 2015 be a great year.
