If you have been around compressed air systems, our blogs, or even optimized installations of point of use compressed air products, you will see point of use filtration in place. These filters come in a plethora of sizes, shapes, and specifications. Here at EXAIR we recommend to always keep a point of use filtration solution in place. This would include an auto-drain filter separator, as well as an oil removal filter.
So why do we have two instead of one? Could you use just the oil removal filter rather than two? Well, the answer lies in an optimized installation that will also carry with it a lower total cost of ownership. The auto-drain filter separators from EXAIR have a filter element which takes the air to a 5 micron level of filtration. (Except for the model 9004 which filters down to 20 micron.) The Oil Removal Filters have a coalescing filter element which filters to a 0.3 micron level for the finest debris/mists that may be contained within the compressed air stream. One reason for the separation is when a system is oil-free, the finer filtration level may not be needed. Also, by catching the bulk of material with the standard auto-drain filter and then leaving the finer filter to catch the residual amounts liquid that had been finely atomized within the stream of compressed air. This finer filter costs more so using it to catch larger particulate and risking it becoming clogged quicker will increase the total cost of ownership of the point of use compressed air product it is hooked to, hence never first and sometimes last. After the point of use filtration then placing the point of use pressure regulator and solenoid valves are next. This is all a better way to reduce risk of these being damaged from dirt and contaminants in the air lines. Total cost of ownership reductions all point to a better sustainability of any product.

As you can see, keeping the point of use air filtered protects your process and decreases the total cost of ownership for your compressed air point of use product. Air… We all breathe it, we live in it, we even compress it to use it as a utility. What is it though? Well, read through the next to learn some valuable points that aren’t easy to see with your eyes, just like air molecules.
Air is mostly a gas.
Comprised of roughly 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen. Air also contains a lot of other gases in minute amounts. Those gases include carbon dioxide, neon, and hydrogen.
Air is more than just gas.
While the vast majority is gas, air also holds lots of microscopic particulate.
These range from pollen, soot, dust, salt, and debris.
All of these items that are not Nitrogen or Oxygen contribute to pollution.
Not all the Carbon Dioxide in the air is bad.
Carbon Dioxide as mentioned above is what humans and most animals exhale when they breathe. This gas is taken in by plants and vegetation to convert their off gas which is oxygen.
Think back to elementary school now. Remember photosynthesis?
If you don’t remember that, maybe you remember Billy Madison, “Chlorophyll, more like Bore-a-fil.”
Carbon dioxide is however one of the leading causes of global warming.
Air holds water.
That’s right, high quality H2O gets suspended within the air molecules causing humidity. This humidity ultimately reaches a point where the air can simply not hold anymore and it starts to rain. The lack of humidity in the air leads to static, while lots of moisture in the air when it gets compressed causes moisture in compressed air systems.
Air changes relative to altitude.
Air all pushes down on the Earth’s surface. This is known as atmospheric pressure.
The closer you are to sea level the higher the level of pressure because the air molecules are more densely placed.
The higher you are from sea level the lower the density of air molecules. This causes the pressure to be less. This is also why people say the air is getting a little thin.
Hopefully this helps to better explain what air is and give some insight into the gas that is being compressed by an air compressor and then turned into a working utility within a production environment. If you were to look at a graphical representation of the exports from some countries (such as Chile), copper, copper alloys, and other metals would dominate over 50% of the graph. In order to get all of those metals exported out of the country, they first have to be mined and, in many cases, separated from other, undesirable items, such as rocks or dust. And, in order to separate the materials, many end users place the products on a conveyor and blow off what isn’t wanted.
We receive calls and emails at EXAIR regularly for these types of applications. Recently, I received one such email about an application in need of dust and dirt removal from a conveyor during a mining operation. The conveyor belt had become overrun with dirt and debris that couldn’t be removed by conventional means. So, the end user sought an alternative, and permanent solution.
It was at this point that the Super Air Knife was considered, and after measuring the width of the conveyor we realized a stock model 110018 would work well. Following installation of the Super Air Knife, the dust and dirt was removed to within an acceptable level, and the end user sent me the pics below.
