EXAIR Chip Trappers Make Short Work of Coolant Maintenance

“Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door,” words attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, means that even if there are established methods of doing something, an improved method will garner success.  It may or may not be true with mousetraps – there are over 4,400 U.S. patents for various designs. The tried-and-true spring loaded bar on a small wood plank seems to still be the most popular by far, however. Likely due to its simplicity, availability, and low cost.

There are also a good many machines on the market to clean & filter machine tool coolant.  Some are made to be permanent attachments to the coolant sump for continuous filtration.  Others are made for portability, and are used to pump out the sump, filter the coolant, and pump it back in.  These can be impressively comprehensive, and that’s often reflected in the knowledge required to operate them, as well as the price tag.

Like anything else, if you need all the “bells and whistles,” I’m sure those machines are worthy every penny.  If you just want clean coolant and you have a few minutes to spare every week or so, look no further than the EXAIR Chip Trapper System.  Here’s how it works:

  • Roll the Chip Trapper to your machine.
  • Pump the coolant out of your sump, stirring it with the pickup wand to get chips & debris sucked up with the coolant.
  • Pump the filtered coolant back in to your sump.
  • If you’ve got another machine tool, roll the Chip Trapper over to it, and repeat.  If not, you’re done.  Unless the Filter Bag’s full, in which case, you’ll want to empty it for the next time.

The vacuum hose (1) is attached to the barbed connection of the Chip Trapper (2). The directional flow control valve on the top of the drum (3) and knob on the pump (4) are set to the “fill” position. The air supply valve is opened to permit compressed air at 80-100 psig (5.5-6.9 BAR) to flow through the pump which pulls the liquid through the hose, then into the reusable filter bag (5). When all liquid is in the drum, the air supply is turned off. The filtered liquid can then be pumped out by setting the directional flow control valve on top of the drum and the knob on the pump to the “empty” position. Once the air supply valve is opened, the air pushes the liquid back through the hose while all solids remain in the reusable filter bag.

There’s no moving parts, and it’s compressed air operated, so there’s nothing to wear out or burn out.  If you keep on top of emptying and cleaning the Filter Bag, the Chip Trapper will operate darn near indefinitely, maintenance free.  Oh, and to explain why I started this blog with the quote I referenced, the folks at Design News Magazine thought it was so innovative, they gave it their “Golden Mousetrap” Award when we rolled them out.  Since then, we’ve incorporated three sizes for 30, 55, and 110 gallon drums.  We also developed a High Lift version that generates 180″ H2O suction lift, for when the standard Chip Trapper‘s 96″ H2O lift isn’t enough.

Heavy Duty Pneumatic Vacuums: EXAIR’s Heavy Duty Dry Vac

Are you tired of not being able to pick up your heavier material with your current vacuum? Is your material abrasive, does it have a high bulk density? Are you tired of your electric vacuum constantly burning up its motor? EXAIR’s Heavy Duty Dry Vac system is engineered with the power to vacuum heavy materials, materials with high bulk densities. It’s material resists abrasion from the harshest of debris, like garnet, glass, tumbling media and steel shot. This system has no moving parts which means no motors or bearings that can fail on you.

The Heavy Duty Dry Vac requires only 68 SCFM at 80 psig of compressed air to operate. Using a hardened alloy construction for the vacuum generator gives the system an increased resistance to abrasive material including sand and blasting material. Depending on your application and the volume of material you need to vacuum we provide 3 different sizes, 30-gal, 55-gal, and 110-gal.  

Heavy Duty Dry Vac in operation

The design of the Heavy Duty Dry Vac allows the system to be mounted on your own drum and has a 0.1-micron filter bag installed on the center of the drum to allow air to escape and keep the material inside the drum. The enlarged size of the filter bag allows it to last longer before needing to be cleaned and/or changed out. Under the lid EXAIR has design features to aid in lowering the sound level down to only 82 dBA.

The Heavy Duty Dry Vac system comes in three different kits; these kits are the Standard, Deluxe, and Premium systems. The basic kit come with the Vacuum generator, the lid, and a lock ring to seal the lid onto your drum. The kit also includes the filter bag, 10’ Static resistant hose, and the aluminum chip wand. The basic system is everything that you need to get started with your own drum.
The Deluxe system Includes everything that the basic Heavy Duty Dry Vac system comes with but adds a few items: A magnetic tool holder, a 2-piece double bend wand, 12” floor tool, 11” crevice tool, 24” crevice tool, a skimmer tool with a detachable brush, and a 3-1/2” diameter bust brush with conductive bristles. All of the tools that come in the Deluxe system are of Aluminum construction. This system also adds the drum dolly to make it easier for you to move the system around.

If you do not have your own drum the Premium system includes everything Deluxe system does except adds a drum. Each Drum vac system comes in one of the 3 sizes listed.

A Closer Look At The EXAIR Reversible Drum Vac Systems

Amidst the multitude of products that EXAIR offers, we have a full line of Industrial Housekeeping Products, our pneumatic vacuums.  Within this product line is the Reversible Drum Vac System. This system is a product that I personally encountered fresh out of college in my first job within the metal cutting industry. I would actually carry a standpipe, 10′ hose, chip wand, and reversible drum vac in a job box to every machine tool show as well as some larger machine repair jobs I was responsible for.

At the time, I didn’t know it was an EXAIR product as it had been around for years before me and had seen better days, had been used thoroughly and all I knew was that I could empty a sump faster than anyone else that I saw anywhere in the shows or even the large sump evacuation systems some of these shops had that almost had to be towed around with a forklift.  This was a marvel to me as I had honestly been showed one time how to use it from another team member and I was able to grasp all the knowledge needed to operate (Not because I am a genius or anything, it’s just that simple). The few things I was not aware of is what the other options for the Reversible Drum Vac Systems were. All I knew is what I had when I worked at that company and didn’t know what kind of possibilities there were to expand our capabilities, so hopefully, this will help you see all the options.

While EXAIR currently offers four different types of liquid vacuums, they are all based on the Reversible Drum Vac or the High Lift Reversible Drum Vac. The Reversible Drum Vac itself is available in four capacities of drums and several options for each. The three capacities available are 5, 30, 55 or 110 gallon.

The 5 gallon is perfect for bench-top machines or small tests that are taking less than five gallons of liquid.  The system can still pull up to 96″ of H2O and discharges at an even faster rate than it vacuums which is 30 GPM.  The system includes the container, lid, 10′ vacuum/discharge hose, aluminum chip wand, Reversible Drum Vac, standpipe, quick connect,  spill recovery kit, and several other ancillary attachments to make any liquid reclamation job easy and quick. The Deluxe Mini Reversible Drum Vac system adds on a drum dolly which makes this an easy to transport compact and efficient liquid spill/recovery system.

 

 

The 30, 55, and 110-gallon capacity systems are available in a basic, deluxe, and premium system. The Basic includes the standpipe for a given size, 10′ vacuum/discharge hose, quick connect, aluminum chip wand, and Reversible Drum Vac.  The Deluxe System adds a spill recovery kit, drum dolly, magnetic tool holder, and other ancillary plastic tools. The premium adds the appropriate drum with a tight sealing lid, latch/bolt ring, 20′ compressed air hose w/ quick disconnects,  as well as upgrades plastic tools to cast aluminum tools.

When To Use The High Lift Reversible Drum Vac vs. The Reversible Drum Vac

One of my favorite TV shows growing up was Home Improvement with Tim Allen. One of the most memorable parts of the show was when Tim’s character would always state that when doing a job you need … MORE POWER!!!

In real life and within a production environment this is not always true. More often than not more power equals waste and inefficient use of the resources at hand. I know, I sound a lot like Tim Allen’s counterpart in the show, Al Borland. Well, the truth is, Al was usually right.  Here at EXAIR, we offer two different types of Reversible Drum Vac, the standard unit and the High Lift RDV.

The Reversible Drum Vac System converts a drum and dolly into a mobile pumping system.

The standard RDV will pull up to 96″ of water column when in suction mode. This is ideal for water-soluble coolants or other water-based rinses. The unit is paired with a 10′ vacuum/discharge hose to ensure optimal performance. The RDV will fill a 55-gallon drum with water in 90 seconds or less when operated at 80 psig inlet pressure. It will then empty the same drum even faster by discharging liquid at up to 166″ of water column displacement. To do both of these operations, fill or empty the drum the RDV will utilize 19 SCFM of compressed air. This is easily supplied within most industrial applications where that amount of compressed air usage can be overlooked.

EXAIR’s High Lift RDV makes cleaning out pits up to 15′ deep easy and fast.

If Binford manufactured a compressed air liquid vacuum, it would be the High Lift Reversible Drum Vac. This is the, “More Power” version of the RDV and can pull up to 180″ of water column when in vacuum mode. This can pull water-soluble coolants up to 15 feet below grade for those large machining centers that sit over the top of a coolant pit or those large footprint machines where a 20′ hose is needed to reach into and around the parts of the machine to where the coolant or liquid is housed. Another application would be for oil-based coolants or other petroleum-based oils/higher viscosity fluids. This will still discharge liquids at 166″ of water column when in positive displacement. The unit will outperform its predecessor and that comes with higher utilization of compressed air. While operating at 80 psig inlet pressure the unit will consume 43 SCFM of compressed air. This volume of air is still easily located within most industrial environments and is still less than the amount demanded by competitive units that do not offer the reversible feature of the High Lift Reversible Drum Vacs.

When it boils down to it, the High Lift Reversible Drum Vac will perform every task of the standard Reversible Drum Vac and will perform the vacuum portion of those tasks all faster due to the higher level of vacuum. When this higher level of vacuum isn’t needed, when the sump is at ground level and the coolant or liquid is around the viscosity of 50 weight motor oil or thinner then the standard RDV will work ideal for the application and would be the most efficient method to get the job done. When the liquid is higher viscosity or below ground level trying to pull it up out of a pit then the High Lift Reversible Drum Vac is the ideal tool to get the job done. Again, Al Borland had it right, more power is not always needed, sometimes it is better to keep it efficient.
